how to drill tag cannon and octane carbon
« on: August 28, 2018, 07:49:46 PM »
just got both these balls on closeout (used to have an octane carbon but made a bad layout choice). wanted to drill one skid flip and the other real strong to go below my primal rage remix. i might get my friends paranoia but not sure yet. my question is which one would be better strong and which would be better skid flip (don't need numbers just general thoughts). my ball speed is around 15 mph off the hand (13-14 on the TV) and revs probably 325-350.

if anyone is curious here is my first octane carbon which i had traded, had it drilled with the length and leverage layout that was on the motiv drilling sheet with the ball.
can i AXE you a question

I don't know how much stronger the Carbon is compared to the Tag Cannon. The Cannon is definitely more angular. My stats are similar to yours except I'm a little more speed 16-17 off hand and it's become one of my favorite balls I've ever thrown. With my experience I think you'd get some overlap.

Personally I think they're too close together to have both. My balls up have been a DV8 Creed and DV8 Freak Show Solid while my ball down has been a Radical Rack Attack Pearl.

do you think i could get a different enough reaction by drilling tag cannon skid flip and drilling octane carbon strong and changing surface to 2000 abralon. or would surface changes not do much.

You can modify the designed tendency of a ball with layout and surface, but you can't make a donkey into a thoroughbred.

Neither of these balls are going to be very strong no matter what you do, they just aren't designed for that role. Find a good condition, used Venom Shock(If you want to stay with Motiv) to be a solid step between these two balls and your Remix. Venom Shocks are inexpensive when new, so a used one should be very reasonable. Or get the Paranoia you mentioned, it would fill that role as well, IF you want a skid flip ball, which is where it truly excels.

Like Milo said, I think the Tag Cannon and Octane Carbon fill the same spot. A ball up from them would be the Venom Shock, Rogue Blade, or Lethal Paranoia.

The Hexion cover on the Tag Cannon is really good. For me it's been great as a late block ball for Viper up to a 44 foot house shot

The cannon doesn’t use a Hexion cover. If you are only bowling on a house shot then you could drill the carbon like the remix and add a tad of surface and be good. The cannon and carbon are close with the carbon being stronger overall. The one thing you will notice is both the carbon and tag need friction down lane, this is where you will potentially see a difference between the 2. I own the remix, carbon, and cannon with the same layout and I believe you can make it work if need be.

I don't think you can burn up the Carbon, because the cover is really weak to start with.

This is why I feel there is too much overlap between the Carbon and Cannon. The Agility SFX cover on the Cannon reminds me of the Hexion covers. So even though the numbers and marketing say the Cannon should be weaker, I don't feel it is when I've been able to use mine on a wide variety of patterns including ones with a decent amount of oil
