MOTIV Venom Cobra Video Review with comparisons!
« on: July 29, 2016, 12:44:58 PM »
Hello guys! I finally finished my second review. The new Motiv Venom Cobra!

I've been always a fan of the Venom Shock, my two 300s have been with the Venom Shock and my highest series too, so when I found out about the new Venom Cobra I thought it was a must for me, and so far this ball hasn't disappointed me one bit.

This summer has been crazy in my bowling center, the AC is not working, the lanes seem to have less volume than usual so my Shock is a little bit too strong for now and since I don't have a lot of hand when I move inside I tend to leave lots of corner pins, specially that 7 pin which I hate more than anything in this world LOL!

Fortunately the Cobra has given me the length I need to be able to play more straight, and since I am a lefty I can basically stay hitting the same mark almost all night  :)

I had the Panic and to be honest I never liked that ball, it was too touchy and it was either too angular or it was skidding forever and hitting late... But now I am really happy I got the Cobra.

For those of you who have the Cobra, how you liked it so far? I use mine with OOB surface and I just changed the surface to 4000 and it is just a tad earlier but also with a strong backend reaction.

Any opinions or suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks for watching me guys!

Great follow up to your first review Angel.  I didn't hear any double bounces this time and you got the ball over the line.  Good changes!  Keep it up!

Nice job, much appreciated.  I agree with your review about the Cobra, nice ball that's very complimentary to the Venom Shock

Thank you Scott! Yes, I tried to have a cleaner release this time, plus some tape on the thumb helped a little bit as well... Trying to get more revs but it is really hard! lol!

Thanks Milo! Yeah, it gives me that extra length that I need sometimes, specially on a house shot and has great carry, right now in my bag I have a GT, a Sigma Tour (oldie but goodie) and a Cobra, and sometimes I change the Tour for a Marvel Pearl or a Fight depending on where I am bowling, but the Cobra has been in my bag since I got it!

Another good video comparison.  Thanks for taking your time to & effort to help fellow bowlers.  Much appreciated.

Thank you so much for your comment Bowlaholic! I'm glad I am able to help with my videos! That is why I started doing this... Most of the videos are from bowlers with lots of revs and/or high speed and they can make even a plastic ball look like the latest hooking monster lol so hopefully someone can feel related with my videos so they can have an idea of how a ball rolls for us simple mortals lol! Thanks! :)

I drilled one of these yesterday and dusted off my shoes to throw it today.

The ball is laid out at 55° x 4½” x 40°, with a P2 hole, which is stronger than I usually drill things. Motiv distributor Ken McLachlan recommended that I go a bit stronger than usual.

This is a very interesting ball. It’s super-clean through the front, quite strong on the midlane and lays down, rolling very heavily on the backend, without covering a ton of boards. It’s not a snappy piece, but park your ego at the door and you can stay further right on the approach and get a monster roll and impact.

I was out of practice, so my release was very “grabby” at the bottom of the swing for the first two games. The ball looked fine, despite bowling on a very messed up pair. I shot a couple of OK 200’s with it and some comparison pieces. Interestingly, I stood on and targeted the same boards as with my polished Octane Burn, but the two balls looked very different with the Octane Burn being more angular.

Later on, I found my timing and was able to play with a softer hand and go straighter up the lane. Suddenly, both lanes looked very similar and as long as I executed, the ball struck. I left one ten pin and one nine pin (bad move) at a notorious “back row pin” house in the last 16 frames. Lots of strikes (and a few real clanger shots from your rusty reviewer.)

Ball impact was very good while covering a lot of boards, and excellent going straighter, the midlanes were messy though, so I think that on tournament or fresh league patterns, you could circle the lane with great carry as well as great control.

I think that this ball is a hidden gem in the market and an absolute house shot or medium pattern monster. Straighter players will love it on the friction to be able to stay outside where the carry is better. Likewise for Seniors as the reaction looks a pinch stronger than a burgundy hammer used to in the old days on wood. I suspect that the hybrid cover will take nicely to a little surface as well.

If you're looking for hook with control, this ball is well worth considering. Mine's gone into bag # 1!

Cheers,
Jason
