New motiv Ball Advice
« on: February 28, 2017, 01:00:36 PM »
I am looking to purchase a new Motiv ball, and was looking for some advice as to which direction I should go.

Currently I use my Rage Remix as my #1 ball, and while it used to work great for me all night, the owner of the house I bowl in switched the oil they were using back in the fall to a new kind that supposedly requires less for the same reactions, the result for me was my Remix dropped from a 3 game ball to about a game and a half ball, to the point where by about frame 15 on the evening I'm struggling to hit the pocket on the right side while standing on 40 and aiming for around 25.

I dug my DV8 Thug out of the closet at the start of 2017 as a switch to ball, and while I can hit on the right side with it, It just doesn't hit the pins consistently for me. The other balls home in my closet aren't coming out again any time soon either, and the last 2 weeks I found myself finishing out the night with my Arctic Sniper as my strike ball, so time for a new one.

I keep leaning towards the Cobra, try and talk myself out of it, and towards other balls, but keep coming back to it. I'm intrigued by the Carbon, but kind of need something now, not at the end of the season, and right before tournament time.

Is the Cobra the way to go, or should I consider a lesser drop in ball to something like the GT, or even a slight drop to A fear/Revolt type of ball? I find the lanes to be consistently very dry by third game in my leagues.

Thanks in advance

I agree and disagree with what your pro shop guy told you. I agree that being a new bowler, practicing and improving your game will help more than a new ball.

However, in your situation i think a new ball that's weaker and smoother could help you. Not in the sense of urethane smooth, but an angular ball could hurt if it goes left at the first sign of friction.

I'd look towards the Venom Cobra or Octane Burn

It can definitely do more harm than good to try and force a ball to work if it's the wrong ball for the situation. You start trying to do all kinds of things with your mechanics to "make it work" when you're just harming your game even more.

When I got my Hy-Road Pearl it helped me relax my mechanics and became more fluid. My problem was the only two balls I had, which were older, just rolled straight. I started trying to make them do what modern day balls were doing around me, and it had me doing stupid things with my hand positioning, etc.

Medium to Lower performance balls that store some energy for the backend could possibly help you out. Just speaking from my experience though as it helped me relax and let the ball work.

Isn't the Cobra more of an angular ball then smooth? Or was I incorrect on that assumption.

I've resisted getting a new ball, essentially since about when the Cobra came out, as I wanted to get my mechanics and consistency improved before I started dropping money on balls again. But since I've seen it, everything I find on it points to it being a ball that would work well with my style. I had two bowlers last month my team was facing, who are both in the 220 average range, tell me they loved my style, wished they had the form I have, but I need to hit my targets better to improve, which is true,  but they also said I should be throwing a less aggressive ball more often. So they are the ones that got me back on the new ball train, and start questioning if at this point having only the 1 usable ball is holding me back from uping my averages.

On the urethane note, I did get frustrated last month in league, threw my Sniper as my strike ball for the third game and managed a 212, playing up the 2 board on each strike shot.

Seems from what I'm seeing here the Cobra, Shock, or Burn are the best ways to lean, and none of the 3 would be a "bad" choice to go with.

Main 2 balls I use on light-medium to medium house shots 38' to 41' are primary Venom Shock on fresh P-I-R @2500 Mirlon.  Shock IMO is the best ball Motiv has ever come out with.  Then, follow up Venom Cobra pin under OOB surface.  Great ball under the Shock with the same type of motion a larger total differential moving inside this ball hits well when the Shock starts leaving plaque 10's.  Cobra is a great ball for transition and burn. Great one-two punch!

Stats. in profile.

Ball you decide on will totally be dependent on your stats. and conditions bowled on.

After reading posts on here, doing my research, getting feed back from my pro shop operator, I decided to add 2 new balls to my Arsenal. Going to order the Cobra as a potential to "ball Down" when needed and for league games played on lanes 1/2 33/34 which I tend to play urethane on, in our house they get used very little outside the larger leagues, and play completely different and about twice as aggressive as the other lanes.

Also going to order up the United Revolt and give it a whirl, I'm loving everything I'm seeing and hearing on it, and if it works, would allow me to keep the Remx in my locker most nights, Just feel with how I throw at this point, and the way our lanes play, it's not a great fit for my leagues, plus it's not like one can have too many balls. And my pro shop owner also said he got a chance to throw it and thinks it be a lot more likely to get me through the entire night then the Remix.

Thank you all again for your feed back, I really appreciate it.

Sounds like a plan. Best of luck!

Good choices!! Good luck and I did love the Havoc and I guess that the United will be just as good!!   The covers on Motiv stuff are the best.
