Primal Rage surface change

I bowl in a wood house with a lower volume house shot. I like the motion of the Primal rage but find it a little to speed sensitive to be used regularly. I was thinking of trying a surface change to smooth out the reaction (4000, 3000, etc). Has anyone had any success or failure with surface change on the PR's?

I have mine at 500/3000 & it is still pretty strong down lane. 2000 would smooth it out a little more, but I think it would still be strong & not a bad choice for wood lanes. Let us know what you do & how it works. Thanks

I'd agree, but this also begs the question why go with such an aggressive ball on a light oil shot?  Like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, yeah you can shave the edges down but I don't know that you'll ever quite get it to fit right.

I agree with you Gizmo.  I like the idea of altering the surface IF the condition wasn't a lower volume house shot on wood.  Going to 2000 will definitely eliminate some of the over/under you are seeing, but I feel a ball like the Tribal would be a better fit.  Perhaps even the Venom Toxin depending on drilling ans surface.  The Primal Rage is a strong ball and I bet some of the issues you are seeing are because it may be too strong for the pattern.

Don't forget the Thrash Frenzy. I simply love mine on medium to medium light oil. Also when the heads begin breaking down. Mine is drilled pin under 50 x 3 1/4 x 65 and I find it to be really strong on the back end from the time it begins it's move and all the way thru the pin deck.

Great info by all. I don't disagree either way. I took the surface to 3000 and it did help with the over\under on the fresh but forced me to play some pretty deep angles to get started. Not that this isn't fun... but there are probably better balls for this option. Still going to give it a run at 2000 just to see the results.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for something a little weaker and smoother to handle the fresh house shot? Tribal has looked really angular for those that have tried it in our house. We haven't drilled a pin down version of that ball yet which may not be a bad idea to stay a little closer to the edge of the oil.

mnicholl - The Rage is a strong ball on the back end. If you want something smoother on the back, give the revolt or sting a try. Those two balls will fit right between your Rage and Tribal.

The Covert Revolt and Sigma Sting are both strong balls.  But both would be a better option to reduce the over/under you are seeing. 

If you are looking at the current lineup, I would start with the Venom Toxin and then go to the Rage when it starts to burn up.  If you still want something strong, then I feel the Revolt would be a good ball to start with and give you a good separation between the two balls. 

I am different than a lot of people where I like to have a weaker solid/hybrid then transition to stronger pearls when they begin to hook early.  When I have to move left, I want to make sure the ball I have is strong enough to turn the corner.  I have tried it the other way around (strong solid and weaker pearl) and I end up with a situation where my speed starts to be a detriment.

I would also second the Venom Toxin.  Wood already makes everything stronger on the backend, but that would work to the Toxin's strengths.
