Rebel Tank vs Venom Shock
« on: January 24, 2017, 09:57:46 AM »
So my Venom Shock hooks more than I like.
At one of the alleys we play at it's very often light to desert out there. The Venom Shock hooks more than I like on it, have to throw it faster which makes my shoulder hurt.
The Rebel Tank looks like be very smooth on the hook. In Motiv's own video on the ball the bowler have more revs and angle than I do, and it hooks so nicely for him. So I'm guessing it would hook some for me too, but probably very little.

Do you guys think Motiv will keep selling the Rebel Tank after the summer break, or will they come with a new urethane ball by then?

I'll be sticking with Motiv from now on. Most ball today perform basically the same way, so no point switching companies. I like the Motiv balls, look cool xD
Most used:
Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)
DV8 Freakshow (14)

Sometimes.
C300 Swerve (14)
Motiv Jackal LE (14)

Retired:
Roto Grip Sinister (13)
Motiv Jackal (14)

Given to a no-thumber in the club:
Brunswick T-zone (13)

Might stick with Motiv from now on.

Try the Venom Cobra. It's a good size step down from the Shock for me.

The Rebel Tank is an entirely different animal.

Agreed.
I'd suggest that the Rebel Tank of 3-4 full steps below the Shock in hook, backend, and oil handling ability.

While the Cobra does clear the heads a lot better than the Shock, I wonder if the Graffiti Tag might not also be an alternative. I guess it depends on how much the Shock hook is too much.

The Tag would get more length, but I was going by his mention of "smooth". For me, the Tag is anything but smooth. It is a good burnt lane option though.

I could see using the Tank on a short pattern where the ball would have enough time to react after the pattern and there wouldn't be too much carry down to hinder its performance.

If the pattern is simply light or has traffic on it and is of normal length (38-45 ft), then something like the Tag or Freestyle might be a better option.  The Cobra is significantly cleaner but total boards covered isn't that far off from the Shock.

If you are simply having an issue of the Shock hooking too soon, then the Cobra may be of use.  If the Shock is both early and too much, moving down to the Tag or Freestyle may be the better option.  The Tag would be more skid/flip than the smoother Freestyle (smoother compared to the Tag).

I just don't see too many conditions where the average bowler can get away with using urethane consistently enough.  Might be good on the fresh or early, but once the heads go and there is any semblance of carry down, the carry goes quickly.

I'll try moving more left before deciding on getting a new ball.
I have done it a bit with the Shock, but I just end up throwing it too far right, so it barelly makes it back, or I go brooklyn.
Would prefer to not have to move too much.
How about something like the Freestyle?

I was focusing on the need for a lesser ball. How much "lesser" is hard to discern from his text. Besides any ball can be modified, to a certain degree by surface and drilling. It is the only current Motiv ball, other than the Cobra, between Shock and Freestyle.

Last Wednesday, I ran into some unexpected dry. With the Shock, I wound up standing about 45,
(Yes, that's on the other lane. :))
playing inside the 4th arrow, trying to keep the ball inside of the 10 board all the way down. Thank God, for the Shock's strongish backend. I had NEVER played that deep before, in almost 60 years of bowling.

The Shock is not in the right place on the Motiv ball chart in my opinion. I ball down to the Octane Burn from my Shock, then to the Cobra. The Shock, and I have two of them drilled, is just a step below the Paranoia for me.

The Cobra on the other hand, is a full arrow less. About the same hook as the Tag, but with a more arching shot shape.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

I completely agree with you. The Shock is stronger than advertised. When I want to ball down from the Shock I go to the Venom Cobra, similar motion but more length and less hook potential, is cleaner and more angular without being a Tag, which, as you said, has similar hook potential than the Cobra, but way more angular in my opinion.

I would try a Freestyle if you want more difference between balls, the Freestyle for me is like a Forza baby brother, similar smooth motion, you can play on the burn and the ball won't hook as much as your Shock does.

Good luck!
