Thinking of switching companies, need ideas on a new arsenal
« on: October 06, 2015, 06:27:24 PM »
Hey guys, I'm currently using some storm and roto grip equipment and have been interested in motiv for a while. Wondering what you guys think would be a good league arsenal and maybe some tournaments as well? Currently I have a storm rocket, iq tour solid, ride, and a roto grip hysteria. What do you guys think would be good for motiv? I don't have my exact parameters, but my rev rate is higher than average, my ball speed is 16.5, right handed. Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, we should know your rotation angle to know what side of the ball guide ( http://www.motivbowling.com/resources/ball-guide.html ) you might prefer.

A high rotation angle player (coming off the side of the ball more) may not do well with an angular motion ball since this rotation already gives more skid/flip type response.

There are a lot of variables in your release that you should know in order to get you best choices for an arsenal.

For me, I'm middle of the road for most of my release stats, so I stay in the middle of the ball guide.
MOTIV Jackal LE .................40 x 4.5 x 40 p2.5
MOTIV Revolt Vengeance......45 x 4.0 x 50 p3
MOTIV Forza GT ..................50 x 4.0 x 70 p2.5
MOTIV Sigma Sting..............50 x 4.0 x 45 p3

Unfortunately I'm still new to the sport and don't have all my specs down. I know with rotation if you break it into up the back, off the side, or in between I'm and in between style.

The Venom Shock has been a great all-purpose benchmark ball. Even though it is marked on Motiv’s ball guide as a “light to medium” oil ball, it can handle anything that a typical league pattern could throw at you. The Tag is extremely clean through the fronts and is a great option for jumping in when the lanes start to break down and has a quick response off of the end of the pattern. If you’re looking for an angular move earlier on in a block the primal rage has been an immensely popular ball for creating angle early on in blocks. Even though these balls might not replace pieces in your current bag, they are what I have seen to be the highlights of the Motiv line and are worth a look.

The closest thing to your current bag would probably be the following.
Rocket – Forza Redline
Ride – Ascent
IQ Tour Solid – Covert Revolt
Hysteria – Revolt Vengeance

Good luck building your arsenal!

Thank you for replying quickly! And your answer was perfect, I was hoping someone would take what I have now and give me the closest in the motiv line. From the videos ive seen I like the original forza, redline, tag, venom shock, primal rage, revolt vengeance... basically everything lol. I'm headed Friday to a pro shop thay carries motiv. I can only purchase 2 balls for now. I know they have the redline, tag, and the guy said they have about 7 other balls which are mostly the newer releases. What 2 should I start with? I'm not sure exactly what he has but like I said most of it is the newer stuff.

If I were you, and he's got them, I would start with a Venom Shock (such a versatile ball, carries well, rolls great for a huge variety of styles) and the Primal Rage (very different from the Shock. Much longer/stronger shape, stronger ball overall) with those two, you could almost bowl on anything. Best of luck to you!

If he has both I will for sure take your advide. What if he has neither? Or has the shock but no primal or the primal and no shock?

If I had to choose one or the other, I'd go with the Shock. With surface alone you can make that thing be great on anything from light to almost heavy oil.

Venom Shock - Amazing ball and would suggest it for your first Motiv ball. It is still pretty strong, especially where Motiv has it in their lineup.

Forza - A very strong ball that reads the midlane very well. I actually go to this when I want to move inside after starting with the Shock. It rolls heavy and is very smooth.

Primal Rage - Mine has a ton of games on it but it is still a great ball. Definitely a strong angular ball. I usually use this in tandem with my Shock. The Shock being smooth and the Primal has a much quicker response time.

Tag - Just got this ball in August and it is truly one of my favorites. I usually pull this out at the end of the night when the pattern is beat up and I need something to get downlane. The best part of this ball is it does not have any jump to it. It is a quick response ball and angular but it doesn't jump off the friction.

Those are my mini-reviews on each that I throw, that you mentioned.

So I bowled in league last night and didn't do so hot. I can't necessarily blame my equipment completely but I have this feeling in my head that I need to switch to a different company. I'm not confident in what I have now. So does anyone else have anything they would like to add? I'm thinking of getting 3 balls to start with if I can get the money around.

Stormroto22,
I have read your posts on Brunswick, Motiv, Roto, and Storm. And you have been given very good advise by many members.  You mentioned you (again) did not bowl well and you think an equipment change is going to be the answer.  You currently have an arsenal for a THS that a lot of folks I know wish they had.
My advise is go back to your PSO and work with him/her on reviewing your current equipment which may need a tweek or two to better fit your game.  Also, see if a certified coach can watch you bowl and maybe some help in this area will be beneficial to you.
Again, your current equipment is good stuff, you need to find a way to make it work better for you.  Good Luck.
