Similar action to Venom Toxin
« on: September 01, 2014, 08:04:38 PM »
My Father-in-law has a Venom Toxin that he bought when he was visiting us from Hawaii.  He fell in love with it pretty quickly.  Upon his return to Hawaii he bought a Storm Zero Gravity.  He'd been told the league he was planning to join had heavy oil and thought that ball may be what he needed.  He has bowled well with the Zero Gravity but was unhappy with the pin carry he saw with it compared to the Venom Toxin.  So he asked me to mail the Motiv ball to him from here in Alabama.  After a few weeks of playing with both balls he believes 100% that the Venom Toxin has better pin carry and that he bowls better with that ball than the Storm.

What other Motiv ball may he want to try that would have a similar action to it like the Venom Toxin but is rated for more oil than the LT-MED that the Venom Toxin is?

Is it possible he may just need a surface adjustment on the Storm Zero Gravity?  Perhaps it's burning up all its energy before hitting the pocket?

I would guess that's a very good possibility and also stronger cover/core and depending on layout.  Maybe not a good match up for lane condition and lane topography with what the ZG is right now.

The Venom Shock. Same core, stronger cover.

I agree.

The Zero Gravity is a lot stronger ball then the Venoms, BUT depending on his ball speed, it could be appropriate. People with more speed and revs tend to need fewer balls between oil amounts. That is, there are larger differences between their medium oil ball and their heavier oil ball. People with matched speed & revs or people who are rev dominant tend to need more balls between one level of oil and the next.

One thing to know is the Venom Toxin, though a great ball, was introduced by Motiv before the introduction of their Fusion Pearl coverstock.  The Fusion pear coverstock represents a point in Motiv's history where their coverstocks are now in the same ball park (in regards to strength and versatility) as other bigger ball companies.  In today's Motiv lineup, the Venom Toxin is more light-oil than medium-oil.

The Venom Shock would be much stronger ball than the Toxin and would be quite a step up.  The Shock would also have a similar shape to the Toxin (same core and earlier reacting and much stronger cover).

After saying that, I agree with the above in the Zero Gravity may be burning up causing carry issues.  Altering the surface would my first adjustment along with a possible change in the line I played to help delay the reaction.  The Zero Gravity has the ability to make a significant move in the back if the bowler's release allows it.
