I have been thinking about touching up my Tag Cannon with an old 3000 or 4000 pad to smooth it out and make it more consistent on lighter house conditions. However, I haven't seen many people mention adjusting the surface on the Cannon so wanted to check before messing with mine. Wasn't sure how well the cover took surface adjustments.

When you say 3000+polish - do you just hit it with 3000 and then polish it or do you normally go 500/3000+polish?

I've just thrown mine from box surface since I got it in August. I noticed this morning that the polish is pretty much worn off and I plan on using 3000 + polish when I adjust the cover

I think a worn 3000 pad would be a good starting point for you. The Tag Cannon is definitely stronger than advertised and might not be a great option on a lighter oil house shot unless you have enough hand to keep moving inside

I often adjust Storm and Brunswick polished covers and have a good idea what to expect. I haven't done Motiv before so wasn't sure how receptive the covers were to surface adjustment. I use the Cannon during garbage time and it's after league/open bowling conditions. So the lanes are pretty beat up often with carry down.

I was seeing a lot of over/under and I only have a margin of error of a board or two. If I miss by a couple of boards it goes low/high. Also, even hitting my target also sometimes gives me inconsistent results. I am sure a lot of it has to do with the bowler and the lane conditions.

So what I was thinking was adding a little surface to the ball to give it more bite and make it more consistent/predictable.

If you do it dry without water,  the worn 3K pad is safe because you can’t really mess it up. You do all 4 sides of the ball. But that’s what people do on Storm 1500 polish to tune the surface.

Adding polish is a art form. You can overload the surface with polish and perhaps create an over/under effect. In which you use the worn pad to knock off a little bit of the polish till it’s just right.

If you want to go 500/???, then you should use a spinner and water and follow the Motiv chart for 3K. Probably 500/1000/2000/2000. Or perhaps 2K poliished.

Not sure exactly what your trying to do or correct. But the Motiv cover stocks are very easy to tune, unlike others.

Is the ball not responsive in the hook phase and your coming up short? Leaving 2 pins on the left? Knock some of the lane shine off with a 3K pad.

Or the ball over Hooks and goes through the nose? Not enough surface, hit it with a 2K pad to smooth it out in the back.

Is it really over/under? And your having a hard time keeping it in the pocket? Knock some of the polish off. Or resurface the ball back to factory.

Quick update: I hit the Cannon with a worn 3000 pad and subsequently cleaned it with the Motiv Scuff cleaner. The ball was much more sure-footed, consistent, and had better drive through the pins for me. Appreciate all the feedback you guys provided!

The scuff changed the surface a lot more than the 3000 pad

P600 paper plus polish.  I found it to be too flat on the backend with strictly surface.  I’ve generally always used 600-800 plus polish on skid/flip balls to smooth them out just a pinch.
