Tag vs Apex?
« on: April 16, 2015, 08:12:18 AM »
For anyone who has direct knowledge of both, can you compare and contrast these two offerings for late, broken down conditions? Context would be for my son who was struggling in games 9 and 10 of our adult/junior tournament this past weekend. Lanes were severely broken down at that point (pretty light even at beginning). I would be looking for a perspective as it relays to a Stroker as opposed to a higher rev point of view. Thanks.

Snakster what kind pf game does your son have and where is his comfort zone and how deep can he normally get when the heads are depleted?  Any guesstimate on ball speed at back end, tilt, ar and revs?

I haven't drilled a Tag yet but my pro shop operator has drilled two and I have seen him use both.

The core of the the tag would probably benefit the stroker more so than the apex.  Its smoother and the ball motion i see reminds me of the centripetal core from storm. I think the apex is more lengthy being to tall.

I would still go something weaker for games 9 and 10 though???

I have both. The only similarity is the length. That's where it stops. The apex gets good length but then almost "tumbles" into the pocket. I find it real nice on true light oil but not great on broken down ths. The cover is quick to friction but because it's so smooth it's not really a stand right throw left kind of piece. The tag has become one of my favorites very quickly. Very clean and a very nice string move to the pocket. I have thrown at 4000 and 4000 polished. Very versatile. The polished ball is great in the burn. Get left throw right and it will recover from anywhere. At 4000 it's been great in a fresh ths. Carries great. I now have 2. Haven't drilled second one yet but plan is a bit stronger pin to pap at 4000 Nd then keep first one polished. Could be ultimate ths combo.
Both a real good balls, both hit like Mack truck but very very different shapes.

On fresh light oil ths both at OB. I was 5/3 stronger with Tag

Thank you for the quick replies.  I can't say I have exact stats for him.  Rev rate is probably 200-225.  Speed is maybe 14, but he is developing versatility to change speeds as needed (he does a lot of tourneys).  Axis Rotation and tilt are generally middle of the road, but again, I don't have exact measurements.

His comfort zone is pretty much track area, but if he's on a challenge pattern, he doesn't mind a more direct route.  When he moves, he has more comfort moving inside than playing outside.  He had basically bulled UP and moved deeper inside to find any oil that was left and relied on the stronger back end to get himself solid in the pocket.  For a little while late in the tourney he did this with his Ruckus Feud (now sold).  He then shifted to his favorite when he has to go that deep...his Primal Rage.

If I'm reading correctly, the Tag will give him the necessary length but will be much stronger move to the pocket.  Maybe same type of shape as the Primal Rage without the necessity to move in quite as far?  That would give him more margin for error.

Bill, you may be right.  I've thought of the Apex pearl as well but figured for the purposes of this discussion, the Tag and Ascent were more analogous.  You anticipated my follow-up :-)

Snakster,

Direct quote from my driller on a Tag comparison......"Drilled a Graffiti Tag this morning.  Pin in ring, no hole.  Threw it on our “house shot” which was shimwrecked by customers!  I do not see skid flip, but it is longer and cleaner through the fronts than the Shock, and about 2.5 boards less.  Seems to have a continuous arcing backend.  The Panic gets through the fronts cleaner also, but finished harder than the Shock and tag.  This Tag will be the next ball down from the Shock, reading truer than the Ascent Pearl, and more length than the Apex.  I think high, med and low rever’s will all like this ball.  I would like to try it on a more hooking condition.  Because out house shot does not have those dry outside boards I cannot give an opinion on that yet."

Thanks Scott, that's great.  As an aside, I saw at least 4 people in our vicinity using the Panic with success that day including one on our pair (and it was a hooking condition). It looks like a great ball.

I guess I'm leaning toward a Tag, added length over the Apex is important.  Better control than the Ascent pearl equally as important.

I would call the Ascent Pearl more the control ball.  The Tag goes longer and has more strength in the backend with better carry power because of the stronger cover and Halogen weight block than either the Ascent Pearl or Ascent Apex.

BTM rates the Panic at 50 for total hook and the Shock at 48 for total hook FWIW.

My go to ball is the Shock on fresh medium to light-medium pin in ring.  I would drop down to a TAG probably also laid out pin in ring maybe slightly higher pin  and moving deeper.  My stats. are in profile.
