Help Drilling a Motiv Octane Burn
« on: April 12, 2016, 11:49:32 AM »
I have one more week left for the healing of my back before the Dr releases me to try bowling again. I haven't touched a ball since Oct of 2015 plus have pretty much ignored bowling during this time.

I have a NIB Motiv Octane Burn that hasn't been drilled yet. Last night I messed wih it a bit trying to decide on a good layout for it for bowling on medium oil on synthetic lanes. In trying to draw out some lay-outs on it, I seemed to have forgotten what little I used to know.

I do best with low pins approx 1/4" or so under RF and under bridge and cg out 1 1/2 to 2 inches. my pap is 4 X 1/4 up. Span 4 1/2.... Speed 13-14 mph and low revs

How will the ball react with a 35 or 40 x 3 7/8 x 65 drilling?

How will the ball react with a 65 x 3 1/2 x 45 drilling? ( not sure where pin would end up here)

Any suggestions on any other low pin drilling?

Thanks in advance to those that take time to help/advise me here.

First, the drilling will have a small influence on the ball motion.  The cover and core have more influence than drilling.  What are you looking for in motion?  More arc motion for up and in type shots (likely with your lower speed and revs)?  Or a shorter more abrupt reaction at the end?  The Burn is a higher RG core, so should go longer / rev a little later anyway (even though MOTIV has it in the middle spot on the low/mid oil row).  Of your 2 options listed, The first one with the 65 degree VAL angle (lower pin) should arc more.  The second one with the 45 degree VAL angle (possibly pin next to the ring finger or in it) would save a little more reaction for the end.  However, the difference between the 2 layouts may not be enough to really notice - especially with lower revs.

My opinion is to go with a layout that has proven effective for you in the past.  Check with your driller for further advice.
MOTIV Jackal LE .................40 x 4.5 x 40 p2.5
MOTIV Revolt Vengeance......45 x 4.0 x 50 p3
MOTIV Forza GT ..................50 x 4.0 x 70 p2.5
MOTIV Sigma Sting..............50 x 4.0 x 45 p3

Never mind people, I am going to go with a 40* x 3 1/2 x 60* lay-out....
