I have made as much fun as anyone about Big Bowling, but admit that their ball looked good in Kent's hand. And their website has improved...some.
Kent’s ball looked good because he was piping it up the shim so it didn’t have time to puke at the pocket and flat ten lol. I have never understood why anyone pays the premium for balls from these tiny companies like Big Bowling or Swag when you get far better reactions at a similar price from main stream manufacturers.
I don't own balls from either company, but I did own Visionary and Lane #1 gear back in the day. There are a couple of Cal Bowling balls that I might try at some point because I'm curious, though.
The bigger point is I'm not going to crap all over small companies, because I want them all to be successful and I want the sport to grow. It's not good for the sport if we just got down to, say, B7 and SPI.
Visionary is sort of my prime example of that. From about 1999-2006, Visionary made some of the most unique pieces you could buy. Urethane with a real core? They made a couple. Big-engine pearl asyms? Check (and take a look sometime at the core in a Radical Spy and tell me it doesn't owe at least a tip of its cap to the AMB cores Visionary had). Particle something-or-other ball that was usable on a surprisingly wide range of conditions? Here's your Granite Gargoyle.
I understand if most people want to stick to a single manufacturer and I don't blame them; 90%+ of my stuff is SPI these days. But I was happy to see BIG get a win on the board nonetheless. Long may they run.
