Venom Shock Short Pin Layout?
« on: October 23, 2017, 03:54:12 PM »
Has anyone tried a shorter pin layout on a Venom Shock?

Mine is in a normal position, (around 4.5 inches).  However, the core isn't all that strong and typically I try to not drill weak cores weak.  Just makes them condition specific.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Allow me to control the lane on fresh shorter medium patterns (27-31 mL of Ice or a comparable oil) when urethane balls are not strong enough to read. Wouldn't really throw it on house. Strictly for tougher tournament conditions. I had a Ride for this previously. It worked very well, but there were times I wanted something a bit more cover wise. I am also very rev dominant, so I'm not really worried the core will be too weak for such conditions.

If you do pickup a short pin shock, be prepared for a earlier reading reaction on the lanes (think IQ Tour with more overall ball motion, continuation, and pin).

While others can explain better, shorter pins usually read the lane sooner, as with the opposite with longer pins/pap's.

Understood. Wouldn't be my first experience with shorter pins. But was curious if it would be too strong of an option. Although i think there may have been a bit confusion on what I was asking, I think you guys are implying the Shock core is not too strong to do this. I saw a video by Kevin Gallagher that looked pretty good.

The difference between a Ride and a Venom Shock is quite large.  I am high rev with decent speed and the Venom Shock is at times too much for the real short patterns.  Drilling a short pin may help.  I do however see a lot of strong drillings on short to get the core to migrate quickly.

Unfortunately, I don't bowl on short enough to be consistent with anything other than weaker balls than the Venom Shock.  I rely on weak covers to prevent the over-reaction instead of a weaker core.

So what exactly are seeking? What type of ball and performance type and what type of motion are you looking for?

I'm seeking an earlier and rolly motion that allows me to tighten my angles a bit more while offering a stronger motion that the Ride. I also had the Ride at a fresh 1000. Possible that the Shock will also be at that surface, but hoping it is more continuos while still not forcing me left.

My Venom Shock is pretty early, but I understand your dilemma. It is worth a try, but I fear you might neuter the ball somewhat.  Perhaps don't go to far to the extreme and instead of something like a 2" pin-PAP use something closer to 3".

I agree with spmc's assertion, but I would apply a 2000 Grit option for just a little bit of seperation; You being a 2-hander, it's gonna read and burn even sooner resulting in going through the face and struggling to keep online, apply 2k and go from there.
