Venom Shock thoughts
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:25:59 AM »
So I was lucky enough to be able go drill the Shock up on Friday. If you don't know my feelings about the Covert Revolt, loving it is an understatement. It's one of the best I've thrown. That being said, I was very excited about the Shock in hope of finding a similar compliment to my revolt.

I drilled the Shock 70 x 50 @ 4 1/4. I expected a little bit weaker overall reaction than the Revolt, with a longer/stronger shape. Thinking it would give me a great option when the Revolt starts burning up a bit. I got the longer/stronger for sure, but I was a little surprised by the overall strength. It's stronger than I expected, allowing me to play almost an identical line as the Revolt, but with the extra length it gets down the lane easier and corners harder, giving me the perfect option when it's time to put away the Revolt.

I've only been able to throw the Shock a few games so far, but everything about it so far screams winner to me. Right down to how good it looks going down the lane. Just like all my Motiv equipment, I'm still surprised how hard it hits shot after shot, and if you're after a ball right under the Revolt, I think this will be the ticket.

Any questions about this one or any of the Motiv stuff feel free to message me on here. I've got most of them and would love to help.

Matt

I am looking forward to hopefully getting one of these.  I wondered about the strength too, especially after the Master's telecast.  During the telecast, the Shock was shown with the same strength as the Covert Revolt on their chart.  (I could be mistaken)

The only thing I can think of is the Covert Revolt burns a lot of energy up early making them appear the same on THS.

I think you're dead on about the energy used in the front part of the lane. I think the cover alone is quite a bit stronger on the revolt. Also, although I'm almost identical, I'm about a board right with the shock than revolt. Heavier oil will definitely show a greater difference between the two.

That may be what im looking at. I like my Tribal so much that id love something with similar motion/characteristics but stronger so I could then ball down to the Tribal.

Thinking maybe venom shock or storm lights out even.

Thoughts?

I've not thrown the lights out, but I've drilled quite a few. Seems like it would be very similar to tribal though. Maybe a touch earlier, but not much. The shock would be more overall and earlier. If you wanted to go with storm I think the reign on would be closer to what you're looking for.

Sting would be a good choice as well. Very similar to the shock in overall strength, with a motion closer to the tribal. A little longer/stronger then the shock.

Mattypizon, the Sting is a very good piece! Matt Fortney convinced me to get that to go along with my Primal Rage & those 2 together are a great combo. Rage is stronger down lane & Sting gives me that good hard roll off the spot, but not really a skid/flip reaction. Would think the same could be said with Sting & Tribal, especially since you would have the same coverstock on both nuggets. The Shock looks to be really solid too. Not much coming up for tourneys, but I may have to buy a couple of these new nuggets anyways!! ;D 8)

Regardless, it sounds like you can't go wrong with any piece from Motive lately. Which ever ball you go with, please let us know how it works out.

I love the Fusion pearl for sure. Cruel Intent and Tribal roll great for me.

I had a Primal Rage that was sick brand new but after I tried to refinish the surface I couldn't get the reaction back. I also drilled it a little too weak for my 20mph speed. I tried a balance hole to increase the flare and shorten the hook phase but im not sure the hole actually removed any core since it has the 2 posts on it.

Anyway the whole purpose of my interest is due to the fact the Tribal is one of the best house shot balls I have. Id say its probably my most versatile as well. Thus the thought to try something else from the same part of Motiv's line for the similar yet stronger look.

Venom shock has stronger cover. Sigma sting has stronger core. And the Lights Out from Storm has the same core numbers and very similar core shape but probably a stronger cover.

See how I make everything difficult haha?!?!?

Trying to finalize my decision.

I had a Primal 90/4.5/30 that was great on fresh with clean backends as well as extremely fried lanes. However on 2nd shift league I would ring 10s all day. I dont feel the layout was a good match for me. I ended up selling it.

However after lots of reading I keep coming back to the Rage to be the ball above the Tribal. It has length and finish which is what Im after here.

Im definitely getting the Shock with the same layout as the Tribal 60/4.25/40 p3.

IF I were to try another Rage what would be a good layout for me? Im 20 off hand with 375 revs. 10* tilt and 50* rotation. Thinking a shorter pin to pap than 4.5 I had on the 1st one to counter the higher rg and naturally clean cover.

Thoughts?
