When a ball is so good . .
« on: March 24, 2014, 10:07:39 AM »
. . you have trouble figuring out what else to drill.  I have a Sigma Tour, 65x5x40, and I literally have no need to carry anything else.  I have several tournaments coming up soon, and I really feel like I need to drill another ball or two, but everything I look at doing would be too much overlap or extreme to the point that it makes it a niche reaction, and I don't want to drill a ball on the off chance I may need it for a few frames.

I have the Greater Ozarks Open coming up in 2 weeks.  The Sigma handled both houses just fine last year, transition just pushed me a bit deeper.  I have a local sweeper coming up a couple weekends after that, but that's on a familiar shot.  Then I have Nationals first weekend of May, but the Sigma also handled everything from fresh to destroyed in Baton Rouge (wasn't able to go in 2013).  Then the weekend after that I have Swiss Trios here in town, the shot will be determined the week before the tournament, but this is a higher friction surface.  6 games first day, 6 games second day, so I'm fairly sure they'll go with a wetter shot to hold the transition at bay, but like I said, it's a higher friction surface, so everything plays drier than it's supposed to.

I have no problem creating hook, and I can move as deep as I need to.  If I drill a ball to handle heavier oil, I'll most likely only use it to burn a shot for my Sigma, and I'm not really sure I'm going to see too much transition for me to handle.  I feel like I still need to drill something, but at the same time I don't see the need.  I probably wouldn't go more aggressive than a Primal Rage, and wouldn't go less than a Tribal.  Suggestions?
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Dont drill anything. Use what you have along with any needed surface adjustments to be ready.

I am thinking that you drill something that is same for covereage, but just a different reactions shape.  More backend or something smoother up front.  Maybe the Sigma Sting would do that for you and keep that Sigma core shape you like.

Every once in a while you find those balls that react great all time.  You can play straighter, hook it more, whatever you want.  I know when I found those I never touched the cover.  Ever.  Just used it.

When I would find a ball like this I would usually drill another.  There's nothing better than having a couple of balls when you are cross pairs and start a game flat ten and know you can pick up the other ball and it will be perfect. This is why some guys had 3 or 4 V2's.

Thanks for the replies.  I just sent it off for another trip through the Detox, so it will be fresh and ready to go.  I guess there's no need to overthink it . . usually a problem of mine.

Really? We didn't notice.  ;D ;D

If you feel the need for an additional ball, consider the Tribal, I find it to be an excellent step down from my Sigma Sting(Although the Sting has more downlane movement than the Tour).

You broke rule number 1.  Sometimes you mess with them and they are never the same.

Eh, in this case I'd already had several hundred games on it over the last couple years and it was pretty beat up.  It was sitting in the back waiting to get plugged and go on the used wall.  When I heard about the Detox, I had them dunk it, because I thought if there's one ball I want back, it's that one, but PRIOR to that, I'd never touched it.  Since then (January) I've been averaging 240ish, but it's all I've been using and it started getting a little lazy again.  The guys at Jayhawk use it on their stuff once a month, and everything always rolls like it's brand new.

Haha they've been discontinued for a while, and oddly enough I've never had a duplicate ball be as good as the first one.  I MIGHT get a Tribal just to be able to get through the fronts a little cleaner if the transition pushes me too far.  I CAN play as deep as I need to, but the angles might start affecting my carry.

Rarely do balls come along that are so good like you describe for me. When I do find them, I buy multiple, and use them rarely, im my head, im "preserving" them (Hyroad, IQ Tour).
