Chicagoland Open
« on: May 26, 2006, 12:54:25 AM »
So who do we have representing BR there this year?  I'll be bowling, and I know Rick Wunder is as well, but that's all I'm sure of.  I can't remember...Lombard is a wood surface, right?  Anyone remember how it often plays there?  I'm starting to formulate my strategy now!  It basically consists of pick up my spares, and hope for strikes.

Splendor,
Lombard is old, worn synthetics - Brunswick Anvilane.  In past years at the Chicagoland Open, they have played fairly tight.  The high end (older lanes) hooks more than the low end.  If you remember how they played last year, it's fairly likely that they will play close to that this year.  I'll find out tonight - bowling at 9:00.

Perhaps I'll see you out there some time this weekend.

Good luck!

Last year I basically played my Sling Blade straight up third arrow at the pocket, throwing as straight and hard a shot as possible.  There's a chance I'll be bowling a squad tonight, but I'm unsure.  Good luck out there, Rick!

My experience has been the opposite of Jeremy's. During my times at the Chicagoland Open and at the pyramid sweeper, I've found success trying to play deep. The straight lines look tempting, but it just doesn't seem to offer consistency or forgiveness.

I bowled 2 qualifying squads for this year's event, the 7:30 and 9 p.m. squads on Thursday night. For the 7:30 p.m. squad, I tried to play my Seek & Destroy pretty straight up between second and third. If eveything was perfect, I was fine. If I missed at all to either side, or my speed was off, split or wash-out city. I went -60 something and only made $30 after laying out $155.

For the second set, I switched to The One, moved to around fourth arrow and had a great look. Went +80 on the board, plus $345. I just missed being the top Thursday qualifier and winning that extra $100.

I know that everyone's game is different, but if you're struggling from the straighter lines, don't be afraid of going in and wheeling the ball. I'm hoping that doing so will send me into the finals to play for the big bucks.

Good luck to everyone who has bowled and who will be bowling. I hope we can have a lot of ballreviews representation in Monday's semis and finals!

I've only bowled 300, but I've benched 345 : )

I bowled the 6:30 squad on saturday. I bowled Woodys on friday night so I missed Lombard. I ended up +91 after going +93 for the first 2, I got 3-4 the last game. That is such a crap pair, I was lucky to get out with 179 on that one. I started in about 4th arrow and went in from there.

Good luck to those who made it to monday.

I put up a +13 Sunday at noon.  Played basically straight up the third arrow the whole set.  The cut was +8, so I'm getting ready now to head back out there.

I bowl the Chicago North ABTs, but I didn't get in 4 events since January.
Maybe next year.
Are they using the same shot that was used last week at Morton Grove?
Good Luck all.

I don't really know what the shot was.  I still have a lot to learn.  Maybe Rick or Gene have a better idea of what was out there exactly.  The only thing I know for sure is that there was very little recovery outside and very little room for error.

The shot was pretty flat with a low amount of oil between 10  to 10. Everything outside of 10 was OUT OF BOUNDS.

I played from 19 out to about 16-15 and that was it I did get a little deeper but I had to keep it pretty straight.

I ended up tied for 5th in the masters. My last match was tight, we both made a few mistakes. The difference was He went Brooklyn in the 9th and struck then high face and struck in the 10th on 1st and 2nd balls. Where I went flush in the 10th and left a stone 9 pin. I would have to say it was not my day. Hats off to those who advanced including Keith that took me out.

Hey Toe....

I cant say a bad thing about the guy who beat me. He sacked up and got his strikes. I didn't!

I was using a leverage drilled V2 at 4000 abralon. I guess by saying straight i mean 8 boards vs the usual 20 board THS.

There was a pretty small volume of oil so there was plenty of free hook, the key was not to loop it through the heads but to throw to a break point. You had to do this without hitting it too much or it would read the midlane HARD. If you kept a strong "Soft" hand you were ok.

It was tough but hittable. You just had to make shots.

As far as corpus....Time will tell..........

Dale,

I didn't stick around after failing to make the cut into the finals.  Did you stay around and see who won?

Ok.  I didn't see him roll.  I stuck around and watched a bit of the first game of the Master's semis.  You seemed to have a pretty good look, it was nice and controlled.  It seemed to fare better than a lot of the guys I saw trying to overpower the condition.  Sorry you didn't make it all the way, but you did better than me!!
