Title: Michigan State Tournament
Post by: Hoselrockets on February 07, 2011, 09:52:35 PM
For those of you that have already bowled this what did you see? I see the scores are pretty low and from the surface to the pattern I can see a lot of hook? Has anyone been yet?

I have not bowled, but have heard.....yes, they are hooking. Believe it is a wood/guardian surface and they are using the white #2 pattern. Transitions very, very fast. .....220-230's are winning alot of brackets. Again, just what I heard, but a reputable group gave me the info.

Went last weekend and wasn't happy at all with the houses that the tournament is in. We bowled doubles and singles at Lefevre on lanes 21-22 and the wall is four inches off the left gutter. I had to adjust my line for ten pins in order to avoid hitting the wall.
Shot 233, 266, out of the gate and then couldn't move any further left. Shot 188. Still took down quite a few brackets since the pace is so low.
Teams was a combination of a bad cross and the pattern not being layed down true. Last game of team event I counted 15 sub 150 games over the 12 teams around me and only 4 people broke 200 on those same lanes.
Really ugly overall. I didn't throw it my best, shot 1804 all events but had 1279 for doubles/singles. 515 was a middle of the pack number up there for teams. Biggest issue for me was checking out mentally. Got frustrated when the team we crossed with blew a hole in the pattern around 12-13 board. They were lower end bowlers who started throwing urethane right up the middle at the pocket. Between that and the bad break playing against the wall for the first 6 I had had enough....lol.
Hopefully they address some of the issues and not everyone sees what I witnessed. Doubles and singles should not be bowled on 1-2 and 21-22 imo due to the disadvantage those players will have.
BTW, I used my SR2 up the boards (around 8) when scoring well. A milder ball if you have hand in this part of the lane will be wonderful. Use a stronger ball if more speed dominant.
Also, talk to your teammates about burning a spot at 5-6 during practice. It will make it play like a house shot imo.

I heard the same this past weekend from a few fellow bowlers, when I was @ a PBAX tourny, and we happend to be on the WHite pattern lol..
they said the heads went very fast and it was stupid how much the lanes were hooking..... and after that the lanes just got plain ugly..... plus i guess one of the places was kinda ghetto too lol, and very tight quarters for 5 / 10 guys plus the equipment.......

Yeah the centers were both sub-par imo. The guy who organized our squad is an association president and I told him I would most likely be sending a letter or email to the state director. Seemed like it had to have been a favor to a friend to have such a big tournament is two such cramped and outdated facilities.
good luck to anyone who goes....probably will need it.

Our group won't be heading there until the second to last week of the tournament so I will be interested to see if anything changes. I have bowled at Lefevre many years ago and was not really impressed back then.

Don't exact details but they went with 4 teams and bowled team event twice yesterday and now have the top 8 scores for team. First teams to break the 3000 mark. Hopefully I can get some more information.

I went up to bowl in the Team event a few weeks ago and I can't believe they thought it would be an acceptable place to hold this tournament. There is almost no room in the settee area so practice was uncomfortable trying to get from lane to lane. The lanes did hook a lot, and the scoring pace was very low. I bowled horrible (540ish) and still managed to win a few brackets. I couldn't get the ball off my hand right all day so I can't comment too much on how much the lanes were transitioning.
Overall not a great experience for me, being a combination of bowling bad and the choice of bowling center. Am going back up in April, so I'll see how it goes then.

I am from Saginaw and was very surprised that we got to hold this tournament. Both the owners of these center put the bare minimum in to them, just enough to keep them running. I bowled the very first day of the tournament both and found both houses to play rather tight down lane, especially the team house. I bowled D and S again today and they were not even close to what they were when I bowled before. They hooked so much the balls I used last time( Nomad Dagger and Reign Supreme) were not even usable. I had to call my wife to bring me more balls and was using a well used Sonic X and was playing 5 arrow in game 3 of doubles. I questioned several officials and the house manager about them altering the shot and of course I got nothing from anyone. I am very disappointed to say the least and I plan on investigating this further. I am going to request to see the lane graph when they pull tape next week( they only do it once a month from what I was told ) because I saw the graph from the first day of the tournament. I suggest that everyone that has any complaints about there experience that you contact a state official and voice your opinion. The worst state tournament of my life and I embarrassed that it is in my home town, if I told you I am surprised I would be lying.

Wouldn't surprise me if they altered the pattern. Things gave been terrible up there the first few months of the tourney. Glad they are trying something different....unfortunate for those who went early.

I could not disagree more with this. It sounds like the shot has been pretty brutal. But for the sake of integrity, the pattern should stay the same from the first day of the tournament to the last.

My buddys and I are coming up to shoot this tourney again. We have for the past 4 years now. The past few years have has nothing but great things to say about it. Think in total we have 20 guys coming from Illinois to shot this tourney. Really hope it's not as bad as the past posts. But seeing is believing, just wish they would keep the sport shots they did in the past. Be up there the end of April, so if you out there the same time give me a shout!

That's interesting. Michigan allows bowlers from other State associations to bowl in their State tourney? axewelder do you purchase a State sanction to bowl in it?

How do you bowl Minor events more than once? This is allowed in this State tourney? Weird.

I wonder if the association checked on the surfaces of the two centers before they decided on the pattern? To me it kind of shotting themselves in the foot with putting such a light pattern down on two horrible surfaces. I've spoken to one of the owners and he says the scores are down and the bowlers are left shaking there heads. I'm sure the association didn't want to give anyone a reason not to bowl again next year. It makes me wonder sometimes.

Most states allow you to bowl, if you pay the sanctioning fees. Indiana is also like that, just gotta read the rules. We basically like to travel to bowl for mini vacations. Our teams are never to go, just like the change of scenery.

You can bowl each event twice but your first 3 games count for your all event score.

Yes you can enter from out of state. Yes you can bowl team and D & S twice.
Sorry you guys can't come up to WI. Unless you are not a member of another State assoc. and/or bowl a minimum of 21 games have an average from a WI state chartered association. You can only bowl team and D&S once.

Out of curiosity, I wonder where state tournament will be held in 2012? Don't know what the rotation is anymore since I've been out of the loop since Grand Rapids in 2006.

I guess my bigger concern is the overall health of the tournament. Yes, it is unfair for the guys who went early but I think if they were to tweak the shot at least not everyone would be upset. I don't want to see the conditions I bowlers on drive people away from doing this tournament in the future.
Anyhow, patterns change on their own. I bowled in late January. Very cold and lots of snow outside. Guys that bowl in May when it cracks 70 degrees will see something that plays completely different.

Great.....site of probably the biggest debacle I've ever seen, and it has nothing to do with Nortel or the Monroe Sports Center. LOL.
