Hawthorne Lanes in Vernon Hills, IL
« on: August 30, 2006, 04:15:46 AM »
If anybody has info in regard to these questions, please message me or post them here. Thanks.

What is the lane surface?

What type of condition is put out for their THS?

What type of lane breakdown is typically seen there (i.e. early friction, carrydown, etc)?

Is there a certain line of attack that usually lends itself to solid scoring there?

I'm bowling a big ABT there this weekend, so I'm just trying to get a little inside info from anyone who's bowled there.

Thanks!

I've only bowled there for boot hill tournaments.  Its worn anvilane with anvilane approaches.  Typical house shot is between 5-10.  I'm a high end tweener and my line of attack was always inside on the variety of boot hill patterns.

It very likely won't be the house shot for the ABT.  Not for that kinda money.

Exactly. Expect the shot to be 50' with very little room for error. If its not that shot it could be anyone of the PBA oil patterns as Hawthorn Lanes oil machine is capable of a THS, Sport, or any PBA shot. Expect the shot to be flat regaurdless.

Thanks for the responses thus far; keep them coming.

Urethane, I know they won't put the house pattern out for ABT, but I find that it sometimes helps to know where the normal track has been burned. Sometimes, those are the first areas that begin to open up.

Well, hopefully Rick Wunder will show up, as he works there and should know the most about it.  Last year at the Labor Day open it played very flat and therefore, pretty tight.  No swing room, a long pattern and a premium on accuracy and leaving makeable spares.  I plan to bowl at 9:30 on Friday and perhaps Saturday if I don't make it in Friday night.  When do you plan to bowl, Gene?

Gene,
htotheizzo is correct about the lane surface - worn Anvilane, but in reasonably good condition - not like Lombard.

With respect to the oil pattern, first let me say that, although I work in the pro shop part time and as an ABT volunteer, I'm not privy to any specific information about what they will put out for this weekend.

You will not likely see a PBA pattern because there is not enough volume in those patterns to hold up over the number of qualifying squads they have on both Saturday and Sunday.  You will definitely not see the house shot.  What you will see is something flat and tight, as desribed by splendorlex.  It will likely hold up well, and as it opens up, it will probably play very nicely inside.

In past years, players were rewarded for making good shots, and making spares went a long way toward making the cut.  I would not expect anything different this year.

My friend bowled it last night, friday.  Shot was very playable you need a consistent release otherwise it showed down lane.  What really shocked me was that prior to the 8pm squad bout 25 ABT members as well as open bowers were bowling on the lanes and then they didn't re-oil.  Whats up with that when your bowling in one  of the major ABT stops!

Well, I hope everyone else fares better than I did. I bowled both Friday squads rather poorly. There was a shot to be played, it just seemed as if I could never get going. When I threw the ball well, I didn't carry. When I threw the ball poorly, I paid for it. All in all, I just didn't have the consistency needed in order to be successful. Since I don't think -3 is going to offer me much hope, it looks as if I'll be playing in a softball tournament all weekend. Good luck to all who will be going back for more!

I didn't do so hot Friday night either, but Saturday I went back and got it working with my Pain.  I was standing about 38, and throwing it across 15 out to about 7 at the break.  +54, that should get me in!

Well, then I guess you went up there and took the top prize this week, right Donny? Sorry, but that post brought absolutely nothing to this discussion. If you don't have anything of value to offer, you might as well not respond.

The $4000 on top for Masters was guaranteed, regardless of entries.  There were 224 Masters entries, with 45 advancing to the semifinals on Monday.

In the Classic division, there were 638 entries, with 120 advancing to the semifinals and ten extra cashers.

In the top 16 match play, Art Gershwiler prevailed to win the $4000 in Masters, and Pete Tagalos won the $5000 first prize in Classic.

Gene,
Regarding the nonsense post by 16 year old donnydeutch, you and I, along with anyone who has ever played in the Grand Boot Hill tournament, held at Hawthorn over Memorial Day weekend, know better.

Hey, Rick, it's nice to hear from you. Yeah, I should know better by now. Anyhow, how did you come out up there? I hope better than I did!

Hi Gene,
I qualified Sunday at +102 and did not bowl well enough Monday to make the finals.

I hope your softball tournament went well.
