Title: UPDATE!!! Kankakee, IL: PBA Experience League for 2008-09
Post by: Gene J Kanak on February 20, 2008, 04:46:30 AM
Hey everyone,

For those living South of Chicago who are frustrated at the lack of PBA Experience and/or Sport Bowling opportunities available, I am pleased to announce that Victory Lanes in Kankakee is planning to offer a sanctioned PBA Experience League for the 2008-09 season.

The exact details are still in the works, but I'll tell you what I know so far.

Who: Open to all male and female bowlers eligible for adult league competition

What: Sanctioned, full-season PBA Experience League (We'll rotate the 5 main PBA patterns: Cheetah, Scorpion, Viper, Chameleon, and Shark. We may also sprinkle in the TOC, U.S. Open and USBC Masters patterns.)

Where: Victory Lanes--1801 W. Station St., Kankakee, IL 60901

When: 2008-09 season, Sunday mornings starting at either 10 or 11 a.m.

Why: I'm sick of shooting 650 on a mediocre night; I'm not that good!

How: TBD (If the turnout is small, we will most likely go with singles, match play (best 3 out of 5. If we get large numbers, it could go all the way up to 5-person teams).

I am spearheading this effort, and I seem to have the full cooperation of owner Lance Murray. If, like me, you are frustrated with house bowling and want the chance to really begin taking steps toward improving your game, shoot me a message to let me know you are interested, or call Victory Lanes
(815-939-2695) and ask to have your name placed on the list. We are planning to have an informational meeting sometime in April or May to nail down the details.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, etc, please don't hesitate to shoot me a message.

Good luck Gene, that sounds pretty cool.  It's just a little too far for me, Northern Kane Cty., but do you know of any out my way?  Or can you point me in a direction to find out?  I'll try googling & see where that gets me.

On edit, I found some on USBC's site.  Still none real close though, but might be worth a little drive.

Monster,

I can't think of exactly what cities are up in Kane County. I know that there are some PBA Experience leagues happening in the Arlington Heights and Vernon Hills areas, if that helps.

Yeah, I saw those.  Thanks Gene.  I was able to google & come up w/usbc's site.  Just typed in IL & found a few.  Glendale Hts is probably the closest.  Arl Hts close 2nd.

Off topic, but didn't they used to have tourney's at the Glendale Hts Brunswick ctr.?  Is it the same tourney that's held in Vernon Hills now?  Or are they 2 different animals?

Monster,

I'm not really sure about the whole Glendale Heights tourney. You might get an answer out of some of the elder statesmen on the board.

Bestbudz,

I responded to your pm by sending a message to the email address you specified. I'm glad to hear you're interested. We're hoping that our location will appeal to a lot of bowlers like yourself who do not have the time or inclination to go way up north for one of these leagues. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Apologies to Gene for the thread hijack.

Monster,
They used to have the Brunswick Memorial World Open at the Brunswick center in Glendale Heights.  The last one of those to be held at Brunswick Northern (Glendale Heights) was in 1990.

From 1991 to 1994 the Brunswick Memorial World Open was held at Brunswick Deer Park in Lake Zurich, IL.  Starting in 1995, after the tour had lost Firestone as the Tournament of Champions sponsor, the Brunswick Memorial World Open was combined with the Tourmanent of Champions and became the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions, which was still held in Lake Zurich through 1996.

In 1997 the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions moved to Reno.  In 1998 and 1999 it was held in Overland Park, KS.  In 2000 it moved back to Lake Zurich for the one season.  In 2001-2002 the PBA changed the format of its season, Brunswick withdrew its sponsorship of the Tournament of Champions, and no Tournament of Champions was held.  In the 2002-2003 season it became the PBA Tournament of Champions, and "Brunswick World" was dropped from the name.

The tournament held at Hawthorn Lanes in Vernon Hills is one of the regular PBA tour events.  It began its life as the PBA Miller High Life Open in the 2002-2003 season.  It retained that name in the 2003-2004 season.  In 2004-2005 it became the PBA Chicago Open, and in 2005-2006 it was the Chicago Classic.  In 2006-2007 it became the Discover Card Windy City Classic, and in 2007-2008 it was the CLR Windy City Classic.

Rick,
Thank you very much!!  I knew they used to have something at that Glendale Hts bowling alley.  Thanks for taking the time to share that info!

Sorry for the hijack Gene.  Good luck getting some more bowlers.  It's great that you're doing this!

The bowling center Gene is talking about is the same place I bowl at. It is a
very nice establishment. It has 16 lanes, and from what I was told, hopefully
it will soon be 24 lanes. He is really thinking long and hard about doing this.
I deal with the owner (Lance) often on all my purchases, and you won't find a
nicer person than him. He is also on the senior pba.

But like Gene was saying, if this kicks off, it could turn out to be something this area has needed for sometime.

And also about the comment Gene said about him not being that good, well he's
a liar, I've seen him bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind words, dwp.

I'm happy to report that I'm getting a pretty steady stream of interest from both locals and out-of-towners. I think we're really going to make this happen.

Like Dave said, Victory is a nice little house, and it is run by a wonderful guy, Lance Murray. He's an excellent bowler, ball driller, and friend. Since I've been bowling in that house, I've brought several friends in to see Lance, and now he drills for all of them. He's just a top-notch guy.

As for the league, if you are interested, please feel free to message me at any time or call the bowling alley at 815-939-2696 and have them take down your name and phone number. Also, feel free to mention this to anyone in your areas you think may be interested. Let's make this big!

Gene,

You know Ill be there! There are some others that would have liked to, but since Church is on Sundays, they wont be able to make it. I knew I stopped going for some reason.

Please do not do what Gala is doing for their PBA league. They are giving you a Brunswick ball and that is the only ball you can use. You cant use your own equipment. GAY

Tony,

I'd be curious to find out who is bowing out due to church. I go to church pretty much every Sunday, and I'll still be able to make it. Most churches in this area offer multiple masses, so it's just a matter of choosing a different one to attend. Oh well.

As for the thing with Gala, since when are they putting out a PBA league? Will this be new for next year? Anyhow, in any event, no, we will not tell you what you have to throw. To put it bluntly, that would just be stupid.

Gene,

Yeah Gala is giving you a choice of either a Sidewinder or a Twisted Fury and a Brunswick 2 Piece plastic ball for free...not free since its $25 per week. They will make that money up somewhere. Also, since the balls are given to you, you have to sign a contract saying that you wont get the balls a take off without bowling the league or you will have to pay the costs of the balls! Amazing! Needless to say, once I read that...I was a NO GO!!

Thanks for the support, O. You would have been one of the first guys that I personally contacted about this league, but I knew I'd never pry you away from that cash cow league.

Yeah, I figured it was time to do something. Averaging 215-220 on house shots just isn't doing it for me. I want to see if I can actually improve my game a bit, and I think this is a great way to do it. I'll be curious to see how many others from my area are willing to do the same. We have a lot of guys who talk about wanting tougher conditions. Now it's time to see who is willing to put their money and average on the line when the chance comes their way.

mlrtme,

As far as I know, yes, Victory is still having the summer PBA league.

Glad to hear you're on board, Tony; It wouldn't be the same without you.

Just a note to all who are interested, I've recently come up with a format idea that I think would be kind of cool. We could bowl each like like a mini-tournament or sweeper. Everyone would bowl 3 games (across three different pair of lanes if I have it my way). After that, we'd cut to the top 8 or 16, depending upon numbers, for single-game match play. Those who are eliminated will all receive points from highest to lowest. Those who advance to match play will get a bonus for qualifying and then gain additional points for where they finish from that point forward. We'd roll match play until we have a weekly winner. That winner, obviously, will get the most points. I'd even like to talk with the proprietor to see if there's a way that we can give weekly payouts rather than saving everything for the final weeks of the season. What do you guys think? Feel free to chime in with suggestions.

The format and payout sounds great, but Id bowl on whatever format you come up with. The head to head on the Monday night league we bowled on a few years back was good. The only problem I have is with my job. I work till 630 am so the later the time, the better for me. I need atleast 5 hours of sleep!

Yeah, it looked like you were having a time of it out there, but that's to be expected of anyone during their first time. At least Viper made sense to me, the approach to it, that is. When I played Chameleon the first time, the transition confused the holy hell out of me! I can't wait to give Scorpion a shot when I go to Town & Country next week!

They put the Viper pattern down again and I picked up where I left off in practice last week after the match was over. I couldnt miss the pocket the first game. A few lowsey spares cost me the match. I smashed the 2nd and 3rd game and lost the 4th by a few pins. the shot on the right lane did a 360 and the left lane held up. I either struck or spared on the left and opened every frame on the right. I lost the 5th game. i averaged about 33 pins higher each game as opposed to last week. i felt very confident after the night was over that i could adjust week to week. that was my first attempt at the Viper. the other patterns Ive had experience with and cant wait to take to ole Terry D. and Kent D. .....not my favorite bowlers, so Ill behappy to go 3 and out on them. Tony,

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed better success during the second week on Viper. How many weeks into the league are you? I'm actually considering joining up late. I'm having big time shoulder problems during softball, so I'm thinking of hanging up the cleats and concentrating full time on bowling, something that probably makes more sense anyhow. I'll have to check with Lance to see how many weeks are left and make sure it wouldn't screw things up too badly if I came in. So, maybe I'll see you up there next week.

As for your opponents, even though I consider Terry D. a friend, I know he doesn't always make the best impression on everyone, so I'm not surprised to see your viewpoint toward him.

Kent D., on the other hand, is one of the nicest, classiest, bowlers I've come across. He's never been anything but nice to me, so I'm surprised to hear that you have an issue with him. Oh well, I'm sure you have your reasons.

Good luck in either case. Like I said, maybe I'll see you up there.

This was our 2nd week. I believe its 13 weeks total. I dont think there would be a problem since we had some new bowlers last week too.

Terry and I had some heated times on the lanes back when the Miller league was on Monday nights. You might be right about Kent as well, but he and I also didnt see eye to eye back then. Maybe things will change now that Ive been away from the center. Back then, they seen Dustin and I as some punk kids and we never got their respect. Thats why it is the way it is.

Show up on Wednesday night and have some fun.

Well, you and Dustin are a couple of punk kids, but I think that most bowlers around here respect you. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over that either way. I mean, consider the source.

Anyhow, I'm weighing my options at this point and will probably make a decision within the next couple of days. I most likely will come up Wednesday eithe way, though, because I'm definitely not going to risk tweaking my shoulder up again when I have the regional at Town & Country next weekend. You guys aren't bowling on Scorpion this week, are you? If so, it will be a nice opportunity for me to come out and at least get a very general idea of how the pattern plays. I know it can and most likely will be much different in Joliet, but all practice helps.

Tony,

There's not much more to report right now. I kind of put off the idea of having a meeting so early and instead think it best to simply make sure Lance has it included on his list of upcoming fall league offerings. That way I wouldn't be making people come out a bunch of times. Have no fear, though, we are still full steam ahead on this. I think we'll have more than enough guys to get this going.
