Thought I'd start a new thread rather than post on last years.
I go to State on the weekend of March 9th and 10th.
Looking to see what's working, what's not.
What kind of surfaces are working at each place.
Let's help eachother out and put up some Good Scores!
I know one place is Wood and the other is Synthetic.
Using a modified version of Blue #1 as the pattern.
-
You beat me to it Chris, I was wondering if I should use last year's thread or start up a new one. Which place is wood? I think your questions are very good, nobody wants somebody else to help them score higher than those giving the info, but types of balls and surface information is something that can be shared. I thought the info given last year was great. On a side note, are you still using the shoes I sold you?
-
I have to find out which place is wood, I thought it was Team Events, but I could be wrong.
I don't mind helping people and the discussion last year on here was great.
That's all I'd be looking for is surfaces, balls, ect. that seemed to work for them. But then I have to try to execute those things as well. lol!
Yes! still using the shoes, they are doing great, I love them! Thanks again!
-
Team is old wood, with lots of friction. Minors are HPL's that are 10ish years old. Haven't watched any squads yet, so I can really help you much.
-
I'm thinking it's going to be similar to last year. The Team house was old but decent wood, played with more friction than the Minor's which was at Weston and definitely seemed more slick. I found more success at Mountain on the Wood with my Recon Silver and struggled to find consistancy in my game at Weston. I tried a new Vivid at the time, but did better with my Motiv Thrash in Singles.
-
Karl ray is (team) old wood but talking to a group that just came back, they have increased the volume to compensate for the burnt heads. They said both houses were very playable.
-
Bring lefties........
Watch out for the local police.
Been a few OWI task forces on the weekends.
-
Great advice guys! I'm a Lefty, and we got at least one other so we'll see how that goes.
Glad to see they increased the volume, but how about the people that had to bowl on it before, they can't be too happy about that.
-
From what im told, it has been increased from the very start compared to last year, not mid-tourney. Everyone has bowled on the same. I think they saw how toasty the old wood house got last year
-
That makes sense then.
-
I heard some things sorta similar
except the wood lanes are slicker than last year and fairly tricky with the lane play and breakdown.
-
So far this is the arsenal I'm thinking of bringing.
I'm about 325 RPM's, 15mph, Lefty.
Storm Vivid OOB + Storm Step 1 (strongest rolling)
Storm Frantic @ 2000 Abralon (snappy backend)
Roto Grip Rising Star OOB (even rolling, predicable)
Hammer BW Venom @ 4000 Abralon (strong pearl)
My biggest question is to bring or not to bring my Motiv Recon Silver, it was very good to me at the wood house last year, clean through the heads and still enough on the back, but if the wood lanes are slicker, than it probably isn't worth it.
-
My theory is " If I own it I bring it".
Doesn't do you any good sitting at home if you think you could have used it.
-
I agree, but I only have a four-ball roller plus my spare ball in a differnt bag, plus luggage for overnight stay. Traveling along with 4 other bowlers doesn't leave a lot of room. So this is the best combo of my stuff I can think of.
Other possiblities are:
Storm Hy-Road OOB
Motiv Thrash 2000+Polish
Motiv TZ3 OOB
-
I'm with Mike as long as you know what your equipment does and can change on the fly.
Going this weekend. Taking 7....pin down original Cell 2000ab, 2 Cruel pin next to 4000ab, Primal Scream pin up 2000ab/polish, Thrash Frenzy pin up OOB, BullWhip SE pin above bridge 4000ab, B/G Centaur pin next to 4000ab and Motiv Sniper OOB.
My theory is " If I own it I bring it".
Doesn't do you any good sitting at home if you think you could have used it.
-
Good luck Scott.
I only watched a little bit of action at Karl Ray a few weekends ago.
That house will make or break an all events score.
Just from looking at Team Red Carpets scores will indicate that.
-
Good luck Scott.
Karl Ray will make or break your all events score.
Watched some action there a few weekends ago.
Plus just bowled a trios event there on Super Bowl sunday.
Clearing the heads will be the key.
-
The leaders in doubles scratch and handicap in division 1 have some suspect entering aves.
entering ave of 204 and then shoots 2187 scratch AE, with hand = 2316
that 204 entering ave seems quite low for a guy who has multiple honor scores and a close to 200 ave in a sport league
-
Dave we all jump to that conclusion when we see stuff like that. I am not involved in that tourney at all, i live in WA. But to make a point, i average 210 now on a house shot, shot a few 300's, 1 800 and i shot 2200 scratch in the WA state tourney a few years ago when i was only averaging 205. People get hot or they match up to the shot with the right equipment.
My point is if you think it is a problem i think you would have to look at the body of work. Does this happen every year? Or is this a one time deal.
-
I was told this year's pattern is 43' in length, a 5:1 ratio, and slightly under 23mL in volume. Which makes it a foot longer and a little flatter with more volume than last year's, which was supposed to be Blue #1 and I thought it played like that pattern. So more volume should be nice. You should be able to build the pattern a little easier than last year which at 19.8mL was just not enough oil for that length of shot in my opinion. Hope this helps.
-
My experience. Bowled last weekend Feb 16/17.
593 team slow start. bass is correct whoever does well at team house/Karl Ray will do well overall. 3266 w/hdcp should allow us to cash compared to last year and I see it at about the same scoring pace as Mountain was last year. 612 doubles. 672 singles. Ledgeview should be easy for most....scores are up at overall in minors from last year. I'd guess that you can use a very strong ball w/surface at Ledgeview and play a slight swing shot. Key is too get it a heavy enough roll on backend without over reaction hence slight surface works better. Those that tried straighter left a lot of 10's early on unless they were no handers.
All in all I scored better on last years State tourney but it seemed Weston was tougher than this years minors at Ledgeview at least for me. Lots of higher scores on my shift in minors.
Good luck!

where did you find the info on the pattern?
i was not able to find it listed anywhere?
-
My group doesn't bowl until 1st weekend in May.
By then we will be well prepared.
-
You'll know exactly what pattern will be put
out,ie Red, White, Blue1,2,3, but it seems like
it depends on who you are. I've asked for that
info to be posted on the website to no avail.
-
So how are people doing?
How are the approaches?
I think I have my 4 ball arsenal set:
Storm Vivid @ 4000
Hy-Road @ OOB (my most predictable ball)
Roto-Grip Rising Star
Motiv Recon Silver (great on Wood lanes)
Those should cover me, my only question is my Frantic @ 2000, it's a ball for me that has a very nice move in the backend when I need it.

I emailed Don at the WI State office, he said a modified version of Blue #1, but of course that can play differently at different places. So far I think I'm happy with what I'm going to be taking.

Bowling this weekend and thinking about equipment.
I currently have been using a brand new Berserk and Frantic for league. I will also be bringing my Reign, but am concerned about my last slot. I have a virtual gravity that kind of died on my over the last 2 years. I am thinking about refinishing it, sanding it, and polishing it using the Storm Factory machine.
Any tips? I just want to have something strong in case I need it.

Not knowing ur stats, I'd leave some surface on the VG, somewhere between 2000-4000 should be good. If your other balls are at OOB, then you'll have a pretty good lineup going in.
Berserk @ 4000 (OOB)
Frantic @ 1500 grit polished (OOB)
Reign @ 1500 grit polished (OOB)
Virtual Gravity @ 2000-4000
Just my thoughts, good luck and let us know how you do!
-
Rev rate around 400 and speed between 15-17. I come up the back of the ball pretty heavily, especially on oil, so the VG always seems to roll out for me. That is the reason I'm thinking about 1500 - light polish. I probably won't end up using it, but I though it would be nice to have something really aggressive, but without the Chris Barnes roll-out special.
But we will see how I feel when I get to the lanes tonight. I will let you know how I do!
-
So how did everyone do this past weekend?
My weekend is coming up on Saturday and Sunday.
Minors first @ 4pm, then Team on Sunday @ 12:15pm
How are the approaches?
Any last minute advice?
-
Approaches are fine, a little slick at Ledgeview.
I pulled off 1850 scratch, but it was a frustrating weekend.
My first game of each set was always under 190 which didn't help my brackets, so I lost money there. On the other hand, my second game was never under 250. :P
The lanes didn't seem too ridiculous, but Ledgeview didn't seem to transition until the middle of game 5 for me.
-
we bowl team this sunday afternoon, my question is to bring something polished and play straighter or bring something with a little more surface and hook it a little more from the inside
-
Seemed like for Team the people that could throw it straighter did a little better. You had very little miss room inside, but some to the outside. Team was my worst event, of course always thinking back, I wish I would have played more outside and straighter. Dbls./Singles seemed like a more playable version of Team, little more wiggle room each way.
Good luck!
-
For those who have went, is there any need for a "dry" lane ball or is there enough volume that this hole could be filled with something else?
Thanks.

Depends on your ability to get deeper in singles and team as the lanes transition and heads start to go. I always tend to stay with stronger equipment as they dry out ie. for me a Motiv Thrash Frenzy was my ball of choice. Real dry lanes equipment for myself wasn't needed but that's because of my technique and ability to move in. I always think generally of bowlers that use dry lane equipment as those that like to stay further outside and play straighter trajectories and don't have the ability to move in to see skid, hook, roll.
-
I'm not sure if it was me or the pair we were on, or what. The lanes never seemed to transition for me. I barely moved in (less than 5 boards) by game six of singles and doubles. It was actually quite annoying. I've never played so straight for so many games.
Team didn't open up nearly as much as I though it would on the old wood.

This was very true for me as well. Again, I guess it would depend on who your bowling with and the pair you were on. For Team we were on 1 & 2, probably not the best scoring pair in the house. But at both places I didn't move a whole lot and we even had 2 other Lefty's on our pairs. My best ball was my Rising Star. I played fairly straight at both places but scored better in Dbls./Singles. Had very bad carry at Karl Ray, pins were sliding on the decks. It was good spare practice though. :-)
-
I bowled the 9th and 10th also, ledgeview played ok had some room but no carry, then there was team, I never seen pins slide so much and still stay standing as they did there, didnt happen to me but seen alot of it, anyway was the same there to had great looks with no carry, lots of corners
-
Anyone care to share equipment ?
symmetric or asymmetric?
pin up or down?
surface?

I read this earlier and bass will know most if not all of these guys. I know one of the companion team bowlers Jerry Brotz. When you are used to rolling on old wood like T&O you'd be right at home at Karl Ray. I'd suppose they drew a decent pair.
-
Know 'em all. Great guys and great bowling!
-
Hit them just right! Congrats! That will be tough to beat if not impossible.
-
Yup....they are all decent bowlers who worked well together to keep the shot in place.
-
Any updates on what conditions you found, from recent State Tourney participants?
-
Bowled last weekend and after reading some of the things here and hearing personally from bowlers in my area, I was convinced that we would face tough conditions much like last year. Before we took the lanes at both places we were told the ball was not going to hook much. My were we surprised! Both houses played well from about the 7-9 board for us down and in guys and we saw solid movement on the backend, We didn't shoot super high scores but shot some decent numbers that won a good amount of bracket money. I did not bowl as well as I hoped to. Developed some timing issues due to what I found was slippery approaches. Not too much slide at the end, but loss of traction on early steps. Just couldn't find my way out of the timing problems and shot marginal scores. On a good note, I won a Hammer First Blood in the ball giveaway drawings on a $10 investment.
-
Not bad! Won a ball, I'd take that as a win! Of course I'd sell it for something Motiv. haha.
-
Chris,
It was a win in my mind and the thought of selling it to buy a Sigma Tour has some legs!
-
state is over...karl ray coming down.

Yeah, but what's going to knock down the pins? None of my bowling balls could!
-
had 759 there today

had 759 there today
That's a great score! Not too many people were able to put together a nice set. I know as of a few weeks ago, the best set was in the 780 range. So nice shooting! Hopefully you did decent at the minors, they seemed a lot easier to score on. We were on 1 & 2 and 2 of us broke low 600's. Could get to the pocket, just couldn't carry.
-
had 702 in dbls and 645 in singles.
our team took 3rd in scratch.
-
Nice rolling Mike! Your team knocked us down a spot from #49. :)
See you got a shout out from riggs on Matt McNeil's D&S at USBC Natl's. Nice rolling there also!
had 702 in dbls and 645 in singles.

-
Thanks Scott...... didn't know about the Rigg's comment til just now.
I will truly miss Karl Ray.
Over the years I have bowled many tournaments in that center with a high degree of success.
I threw one of the last "known" balls down the lanes.
Hopefully see you around before the Hitter.
-
Finally watched/listened to rigg's comments from the webcast.
He pretty much nailed me to a "T".
Watching McNiel's ball reaction I never got far enough left with my feet at the Stadium. But I'll take the 299 game. LOL
-
Plus I was big bracket buster on my squad.....lmao
