40 Boards & VMSBT -- Thanks
« on: January 17, 2010, 07:11:15 AM »
Jeff and Tony,

Thank you for a very challenging, yet playable condition this weekend.  Both conditions were not easy but both were playable if you were in the right part of the lane with the right equipment.

Bowlers should look at bringing a couple extra balls with them since they are keeping it hush-hush as to what the condition will be.  You can easily get away with a 4-6 ball arsenal which is what you should be carrying if you're bowling in tournaments to begin with.

I look forward to many of these events in the future and again, congratulate them on a job well done.

current exempt

Your $30 entry fee is a "pipe dream" at best. $80 entry fee isn''''t high at all for a once a month tournament. Your example of not cashing would put you down $240 over a three month stretch. In the DC/MD/VA area, there are a ton of bowlers who bowl 2-4 nights a week at $20/per league, paying another $20 for pots and another $40 for brackets. So by my math, that''''s $80 per league night, $240 per week (3 league nights for this example) and $960 a month.

These are the same bowlers who say "$80 is too expensive to put up for a tournament".

How expensive does that $80 entry fee look now?

Tony,

Very good points.  I think you need 100 entries to have any kind of decent prize fund regardless of entry fee.

Take the entry fee out of the mix here, how do you attract 100 bowlers these days?

Trump we see a 100 bowlers at 3 events in the area right now.
Dec - The Big One
Some bowled three squads at $100 a pop and it took 944 for four to qualify.

Jun - Opposites Attract
You see a 100+ bowlers because each takes two people to enter. Last year we had 69 men and 69 women.

Aug - VMSBT BBWSC
Tony asked people for money and they gave it to him, in turn $3K was GUARANTEED up top. That bought folks from as far as Massachusetts and North Carolina. Plus, people re-entered with it only taking +46 for 8 games to make the top 16.

The common theme at these events is there is more money to bowl for thanks to the increased participation. Bennett drew around 60-70 to Perry Hall on Thanksgiving Eve and honestly there would 100 people there if there was not so much competition that night.

P.S. Current Exempt, money is a small part of why people don't "compete". I see people tipping ball drillers $100, folks buying $200 balls and dropping $100 at league to play the side action and pay $20 for their fees. My Thursday league for example, there are $70 in pots/survival boards and that is before you get in brackets for those that play.

I know when I was out west for a little bit the cheapest tournament I could find was $100. So hats off to Jeff and Tony! Its kinda funny how cheap people are out here in the east. Now if I could only figure out my timing issue and stop being laid off Id join ya guys!
