40 Boards has and will continue to mix up the patterns. We're going to let everyone be surprised when they get there! Ft. Meade has a hard Anvalane synthetic surface.

We have a little running joke about Fort Meade in leagues.  Take whatever the posted length of the pattern is, add 5 feet on the right, subtract 5 feet from the left and that's what it plays like .  Very hard to get friction in there on patterns where it's not built in. Overall on most of the patterns we've gone through in PBAX league you still better throw it well and read the quick transition in order to score.

Jeff,

I'll fix the location on my site and I'll also spread the word this week.  From the sounds of it, everyone is done with the holidays and looking toward the start of a new year and bowling more.

Hopefully everyone has gotten a taste of the tournaments around the area and have figured out which ones are worth the time and money to compete in...

Please let the bowling groups know your schedules with as much advance notice...with March and April just around the corner I'm sure folks are going to be scheduling the DUTCHMAN and CITY, maybe even STATE.  Knowing your schedule and Tony's will help the bowler's I travel with to coordinate our events around your weekends.

PS...All goes well, I'll be out the first 2 weeks in Feb (Mega + Masters).

See you Saturday

What type of lane condition is this tournament on? House Shot? Sport? PBA? If house shot, what length? Basically anything you can tell me about the lanes would be great.

Why do you have to know what shot is laid down beforehand?  Show up, practice and bowl.  This whole concept of needing to know a pattern before bowling is getting ridiculous.

Wow there are other bowlers that actually don't think the patterns should be told.  I really cannot believe all the whining when people don't know the shot or if a house changes it from month to month.  I agree 100%, SHOW UP, PRACTICE, AND READ THE PATTERNS ACCORDINGLY!

I think Jeff and Tony are doing the correct thing by not telling what will be put out.  Its actually killed some tournaments, because telling that you are putting down a tougher pattern will not draw the house guys.  Prime example is Jim Smiths tournaments, he kept putting down PBA patterns and ran his tournaments into the ground.  Advertised house shot and got 117 entries for the big one.  Make it cheap and easy and you'll get the entries!  Sucks but its true.

It is funny how so many of us are concerned with what is going to be on the lane. It shows our limited knowledge as bowlers that we don't take into account the surface of the lane and the house shot the center uses. There are centers in the area using a low friction lane and there are others with high friction surfaces that promote ball reaction. And then there is that thing called lane memory, it takes several passes of the stripper and new pattern to truly get the shot close to “true”.

The real question is simple, does it matter what’s on the lane? If you are sincere about bowling, you’ll be there ready to bowl. The new PBA started this mess with "a need to know" since they use what I term their multiple house shots. And even when you know what’s on the lane, what happens when it does not play the way you assumed it should? Do you stand there and force it or do you make the adjustment(s) needed to score? You do what you have to do to score!

VMSBT & 40 Boards are taking the same approach in 2009, “Your lanes are on for practice!”

Prime example of the lanes playing differently...

York, PA - Suburbanbowlerama - Cheetah Pattern

My experience with that pattern has always been that I could spark it from the gutter.  Unfortunately that wasn't the case as I get all warm and fuzzy inside when I read the Cheetah Pattern is going to be put down.

In this case, the gutter was OB...smacking the 3-6 dead in the face or better yet, falling off in the gutter.

When the tournament was over, I asked the director about the condition and he said, "yeah, our gutters tend to hang here!!"

I basically said, ok, makes sense, with my eyes the size of silver dollars and my jaw half way to the floor.  Of course I did not play the pattern outside or try to force it out there, just some supporting information for Mr. Baker's points regarding lane surface and typical house conditions which lie beneath.

Hahn, how about Jim Smith's version of the Cheetah at Manassas? There is another version of it that plays tight. I am like you when I hear the word Scorpion, sing me up! There is just something about that pattern that I seem to match up with more times then a little bit!!!

As a certified coach, I’ll be the first to commend you on acknowledging that you are aware that you have weaknesses in your game. But as someone who bowls tournaments, I realize there is a HUGE difference between preparing and being tournament ready. Let’s say you become a solid practice player, then what? Will you come out and bowl tournaments? Or will you do what so many do and become a house mouse? The area is full of people who are legends in their own mind. One thing I have learned from bowling tournaments, you might respond differently physically & mentally, plus the shot can breakdown different. Just remember, 90% of the field is you, bowlers in need of work. Most of us work, don’t practice and show up at a tournament or two. Don’t be afraid to come out and lace ‘em up for battle. You might just fool yourself.

You cannot become a better bowler standing in the back and playing cheerleader!!!
