For the DC, MD, VA Bowlers
« on: February 04, 2011, 01:32:09 AM »
There is a desire to start a new commercial league at BA Burke next year and I wanted to gauge your interest in participating.  It would most likely be on Thursdays.  An effort is being made to have BA kick in some money to the prize fund and to acquire a few sponsors.  Anyone interested?

If it's on something other than a house shot, I'm in.  Maybe use Team USA or Kegel Patterns.  Not going to drive from MD and pay $25 a week to do the same thing for 32 weeks straight.  Maybe a 4 game trios league,  might be easier to get more teams that way (there is a very successful trios PBA league at Ft. Meade in MD).  Plus you can do more with brackets in a 4 game league (1-3, 2-4).  Keep in mind these are just suggestions, and if you are starting the league, you have the right to do whatever you want regarding format, oil conditions, etc.  Good luck.

No, I'm not organizing it, just trying to gauge interest for those who are.  Thanks for the feedback, you make some excellent suggestions.  I would also prefer it not be on a house shot, but I'm almost certain it will be.

Thanks TripFour.  I just make my suggestions as there are already a few commercial leagues I know of in the noVA area which are all basically the same thing.  BA Shirley has two and BA Falls Church has one, both 4/5 man teams on house shots.  I don't even know if BA Burke has the ability to put out anything with their oil machine, but it would be nice to have something challenging to bowl on for once in the noVA area.  Unfortunately, bowlers will probably lose interest if they hear its not going to be a house shot, but if there is enough money added, they may bowl anyways.  Should be interesting.

It may be passe, but it's worth a shot.  Burke doesn't have a competitive league at the moment, so maybe they'd be willing to pony up some cash to attract the better players?  You never know until you ask.

Kevin, he was probably at the beginning of a re-run of the ToC telecast from two weeks ago while he was writing that post...

..."'cause he's still preoccupied...with 1985!"

Just messin' around--leagues like what we're talking about here are an endangered species for sure...I hope it gets off and stays successful!

I bowl at Bowl America Shirley in the Wed Mens Commercial League, and its hardly a house shot, well hardly a THS, the outside boards are normally flooded, there is no wall or bounce zone , you cant just throw it right and watch it hook back..half the time if you play the wrong angle, the balls slides off into the gutter. So what do you call a house or THS shot?

Anyway to the OP..I used to bowl in the mens league at Burke way back in the day, I hear its not there anymore, but I would be interested.

I think part of the challenge at Shirley is their approaches, haha.  The league average is around 200, so maybe slightly more difficult than normal THSs. But the top 3 averages are still 234, 226, 225 so they either match up really well or there is some room to play with if you play inside.  I know both Darryl and Wes are primarily power players.  I have practiced after the league, and they were hooking a ton, understandably so after 3 games each with 10 on a pair.  But they were definitely scorable, carry issues aside.
