Decent centers near Rutgers University (New Brunswick)?
« on: December 23, 2005, 07:18:42 AM »
I'm flying up for the UT game on the 30th but will have about a day and a half of downtime.  Are there any decent centers in the area that make it worth trying to check a two-ball tote?

And if not, anyone in the area up for lunch or dinner on the 29th?  I fly in on the 28th, but probably won't be in the hotel until after 9PM.  Game is 6PM local time on the 30th and I fly out on the 31st.

Although I haven't booked the room yet, I believe I am going to stay at the same hotel as the team, which will put me in Bridgewater (I can only assume it must be a more accessible facility from the airport or freeway since there are other hotels closer to the LBAC that appear to have been comparable in price and quality).

The house for the US Open is right up the street ( Carolier lanes) nice 80 lane Brunswick house.

Having just gotten home, I can report that I did throw a baby block (6 games) on Thursday.  Can't say I was overly impressed with the house...staff was non-responsive to calls and I hate that pre-pay crap.

On a somewhat related note, the travel also demonstrated that TSA staff don't have the first effing clue what they are doing in terms of consistent application of what is and is not allowed on planes.  The staff here in Austin had absolutely no problems with taking a two-ball tote as a carry-on.  However, on the return flight from Newark, there were three different opinions that ultimately ended in me having to go back to the check-in area and run the tote through as checked baggage.  Both non-stop flights, both with the same airline and both with the tote as what would have been the only carry-on bag.  The three opinions ranged from the discussion between the two screeners that they believed it was good to go but would check with a supervisor to a supervisor saying it was too heavy (31 pounds is within the carry-on limit) to her supervisor saying the material is too dense.

Carolier is usually OK on calls during league.  During open bowling during the holidays, sounds like a reduced staffing problem.

I also rather fly out of PHL, but Newark Liberty International to Philadelphia International is only 2 hours.

They had people at the desk....simply couldn't be bothered to answer the intercom.  The wait was literally so long that the scorer went into its energy saving mode and then the lane would shut off until a ball was thrown (or in this case, they finally cured the 180 condition)

I looked at Philly...no non-stop flights for both directions for the times and cost that I got going into EWR.  The rental car would have been cheaper at Philly but there was a big off-site drop fee to return it to a different airport.  The team flew in and out of Trenton, but they had a chartered flight and had the bus to provide transport to and from the hotel and the RAC.

And I can safely say that NJ has got some of the most poorly designed roads I have ever had the misfortune to miss a turn on...my guess is that the impression would only have been magnified had I tried to drive up from Philly at night- remember that it has been more than 35 years since I lived in NJ  Have y'all ever heard of road signs up there???

I find that the intercom system is not the best, we usually send a team member to the desk as backup.

I agree about the roads, if you don't know where you're going, you probably aren't going to get there!
