AMF LAUREL RECAP
At AMF Laurel Lanes Saturday night, we saw a record number of left handers enter the building and that helped produce the second largest field this season. 40 Boards was thrilled to have 26 family members return and we look forward to our 15 new family members continuing to bowl with us!
Saturday started off interesting, as Latise & I arrived at 4pm to a center full with open play and birthday parties. AMF Laurel eventually took the lanes back and oiled the lanes for the tournament. With $1640 in the prize fund, the high game pots paying out $120 per game, and each survival paying out an additional $270, we watched a lot of people focused on striking. Our farthest entry to date came from New Jersey's William Ripley who shot an opening 279 game and then concluded qualifying with a 287 game to take the lead. Those two games helped him post a tournament best +260 to earn a spot in the championship match. Bobby Hall II stole the show in the middle of the tournament by posting the first 300 in the '07-'08 Boards & Balls Tour.
The tournament cut score shot up the first three games to +105 before leveling out the last two games, giving quite a few a shot at the bracket final. Spare shooting in the final frames was the difference between making the finals and or cashing for some. Our other qualifiers included VMSBT (
www.vmsbt.com) Director Tony Walton who rolled a 245 the last game to earn a two round bye. Other finalists included Shawn Morris, Ricky "Redds" Henderson, Rickie Banister & Supachai Papee. It took +153 to make the finals.
Redds captured his first BBT title by using a combination of solid play and good fortune. After slipping by Banister and Morris, he turned up the heat as he defeated Walton 238-213 in the semi final match. In the title match, Redds got up in the 10th needing the first strike to win. He delivered a solid shot to open the tenth frame as he knocked off the leader. Dressed in his Bob Marley "Legend" t-shirt, Redds became our 5th Boards & Balls Tour champion with a 278-258 victory.
21 bowlers took home a piece of the $4,375 paid out between the prize fund and side action.
1. $500 Ricky Henderson
2. $340 William Ripley
3. $220 Tony Walton
4. $160 Shawn Morris
5. $130 Supachai Papee
6. $130 Rickie Banister
7. $100 Chhouen To
High Super Bowler (50+) - $60 Dave Hart
