This sounds like a good tournament. I like the marathon format, but here's my gripe, why put out house? If you are worried about scaring people away, you won't. There will be plenty of entries for $1000 guaranteed with only a $60 entry fee. The lefties will run away with it, and everyone knows it. Look at the tournament just run this past weekend at Colony Park in PA. Rick advertised a tougher pattern (kegel pattern), and still that place was teeming with people (believe they got over 70 entries). I did not bowl that well, but whatever, it was a good experience and it was fair. The only good thing about you advertising a "modified house shot" is that you can modify it as much as you want to make it as tough as you want. Unfotunately, people are going to come in there expecting a wall, and if they don't get it, they will complain. I will probably be attending, but I will not be a happy camper if the left only has to move 3 boards the entire day, which will give them the carry they need to post the high scores needed to win on a house shot. Run a kegel challenge series pattern, they are very hittable (probably take 210 average to cash) but you do have to make the right decisions and stay in the ballpark to score well. Plus, you could get away with calling a kegel challenge pattern a "modified house shot" anyways. Just my $0.02.
-
I agree with 9 back. Rick had 71 entries last weekend. I was not close to cashing but it was a fair and playable shot. Tougher conditions just make me a better bowler for the next tournament. My thought is that the 200 plus "house bowlers" will have a field day. Just my thoughts. Hope you have a great tournament.
-
I also agree with 9 back. I did not make it to the tournament on Sunday, but I heard at Colony Park it took about +150 for 8 games to cash, which sounds like they were still very playable. I believe he used the Kegel Sunset Strip pattern, which is one of the Kegel Challenge patterns, as 9 back suggested. I don't think you are going to stop bowlers from returning the following year with $1000 guaranteed for a $60 entry fee.
-
Are we seriously barking about the shot mid-January for a tournament that is going down in April? Before you go trying to tell Chuck how to run his tournament, do you run an event for Chuck to be critical? Drawing bowler is tough these days. Colony had 72 entries this year and that was down from the 84 I think Rick had last year. Entries just aren't a given these days regardless of the money and/or shot used.
None of us know what Forest Hill's so-called modified house shot will be like. And as for the lefties, I crossed with JT & CJ Sunday at Colony, they weren't moving their feet all day. The left will always be the left until the majority of the bowlers are left handed which in turn means the right side of the lane would hold up better. The left vs. right issue will go on forever like high rev guys griping about the lack of volume with these atomic bomb balls.
My guess is Chuck went with a modified house shot to try and get the local bowlers out. Local bowlers are a tough draw in that area for some reason. I've learned over the years, people do not leave "home" to bowl except for a few and I mean very few. Those York bowlers who supported Rick will not be making the 55 minute ride to bowl. No different than the northern Virginia bowlers who we only see in northern VA. The Maryland bowlers are no different, Capital area bowlers don't come north, B'more bowlers above the tunnel don't come through the tunnel just like the guys below the tunnel don't go north.
I'm telling you as someone who does run tournaments, people have more excuses than a little bit as to why they aren't bowling. VMSBT for the last 8 or 9 years has been offering non-THS shots and they're playable but guys are no where to be found. We've offered a mix a shots at our 40 Board events and it's the same people regardless of the shot. Guys, either we're bowling or we aren't! Chuck is not and should not change for any of us giving our brown penny thoughts because come April 9 we might not even be able to bowl.

Straight Ball, I didn't mean to upset you. I, along with everyone else, appreciates Chuck's effort in running this tournament. He may run whatever shot he wants to (as it is his tournament to run), and if he feels he needs to advertise a modified house shot to gain entries, good. I would rather that then him advertise something tough and get 20 entries. It's just sad that people will not show up purely for the fact that they have to be accurate to score well. With the flurry of 900 series this year, when are bowlers (and USBC) going to wake up and realize this sport has become more about the corner pins than shotmaking and versatility?
-
The shot for this tournament is still undecided. It very well could be a tough shot. A modified house shot does not scream hey you gotta average 250 to win this tournament. The shot will present a challenge. If you think your an accurate bowler then come on out and prove you can win $1000.
-
Don't take me as angry with you or Mad Man aka Mich St., the point is that we bowlers are putting way to much emphasis as to what’s on the lane. A tournament could advertise pattern X and the center lays pattern Y. We should all be using practice to really figure out our plan of attack with the however many balls we own. From my personal experience, once you've bowled enough tournaments, you can figure out what is going to happen.

Really! We are talking about a lane pattern???? Come on Damn it, just shoe up and bowl. The pattern was fair at Colony Park North and yes the Lefties ran over everyone. I guess I have no idea who won, it was not me! The last time I checked some of those Left handers are pretty good... I did not bowl well on the back 4 games and I am not complaining. The middles opened up for the Right and the "Outside" was open on the Left. The problem is that they are 60 some Righthanders and only about, maybe 10 lefties... Sooner or later either side is going to get good...
Now back to this discussion about patterns and how un-fair they are for the Righthanders. The scoring pace is going to be high at Fort Meade, surface is good and for the most part there is friction... The pattern will have little effect on who wins or loses especially when it is 2 months away and a modified House Pattern could be anything. So pull out or straighten out your undies and shoe up and support the local tournaments. Chuck runs a great tournament and the major sponsor for this event is a good guy... SO SHOE UP AND BOWL, STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT FUTURE EVENTS!!!!! please!

I have finally decided to enroll in this era of forum conversation in the efforts to hopefully make things not only clearer but better for everyone involved. Thanks to everyone who is helping this project along.
Okay here it goes - - for the J.O Spice Open the pattern has yet to be determined. As Bakes has said and other tournament promoters agree ... its all about entries. Say what you will about prizes or entry fee, in my opinion you gotta have the people bowling to make the event (especially new ones). Bever and I had a good run with our Sport Shot event which featured what i would say was one of the hardest around. But alas, it died a painful yet peaceful death with the last 2 events having less than 10 people show up.
Since our tournaments demise, I have watched others try to hold tournaments with a wide range of lane conditions, entry fees and the like and the ones that I see attracting the most people are those that either do not mention the pattern (which usually means THS) or others that modify the THS. From Hagerstown to Chambersburg to Mr. Teirno's well attended senior events in PA...they have lots of entries on house or house similar patterns. Rick's tournament last week was different because of "what" it was and not due to being any kind of special 8 game marathon.
My goal in this endeavor is to promote a tournament that benefits everyone involved ... bowlers, proprietors and sponsors with the parameters at my disposal. Sure I personally would like to see a pattern that puts quality shot making at a premium, however, I have to look at things from outside my little bowling world and have an event that is going to attract as many individuals as possible. Hopefully, with a modest entry fee for 8 games, a pattern that is not on the borders of professionalism and a guaranteed first place prize will enough to bring in those who'll say "I can take a chance on a $1000 for $60".
I know it's not what us die-hard perfectionist want but in today's world, isn't it enough just to have something for us to bowl no matter what it is. (note - any Kegel challenge pattern is a modification of Kegel recreational version)
Thanks and hope to see everyone at Forest Hill on April 16th.

WELL SAID CHUCK!
Those purist you speak about don't even bowl competitively anymore. There is no such thing as a great tournament without participation. Support your local tournaments before they are gone, AGAIN!
-
Thanks for putting on this tournament Chuck. I'll be the first to admit I get on a tangent sometimes with my lane condition discussions, and can be an arrogant a$$hole at times. It's not that I don't feel I can compete on house shots, it's just the fact that sport itself loses credibility when tournaments are carry contests. I'm glad you are doing what you can to attract entries, and I feel you should get a good turnout. I plan to attend.

Yes Mich.. I think we can all look at what we'd like to believe our sport could be or rather should be. Alas I would have to think those are days in the past. I, like you and others really wish we could have tournaments like the old days of the Midmight Marathons at Country Club and the Saturday tournaments at Price Lanes in DE where there would be 60 to 90 people each time. I think the only thing close is Ed Fisher's Super Bowl tournament at Leisure. But even then we didn't care about what "pattern" was there. It was about winning and king of the hill for the day.
Anyway, I just would like for bowlers to shed their armour about only participating on the Viper or Cheetah, or whatever and just bowl. With the conscience of today's bowler one would think they would prefer to win against 60 people than 15 or 20 but I could be wrong.
Regardless, I just hope that all the good people reading this post as well as others on this forum take the time to pass the word about ALL the tournaments people like myself and Bakes, Tony. Rick and others put on so that we continue to have something bowl.
-
a couple of thoughts on pattern bowling, and only bowling if you think the pattern fits you...
first of all, let's think about "modified house pattern"... Forest Hill's THS plays entirely too friendly on the left to run a tournament on it, unless you don't want a 2nd anniversary tournament... so, a MODIFIED shot is needed... you look at all the kegel patterns, and they are all symmetrical... this is fine if you're only going to have 10 games / bed, but after an hour the shot tilts to favoring lefties again...
I ran tournaments for 15 years and was in charge of the shot for FairLanes in Houston, and Annandale and Alexandria in fairfax county VA in the late 70's and early 80's... I learned lane maintenance from hall of famers and PBA lanemen... hell, I even worked on a resurfacing crew for a summer... (rotten job, but you learn things ;-))
you CANNOT put out a symetrical shot and have a fair run for the win, unless it's a brickyard, equally tough on both sides, and usually that favors righties near the end of the day...
the best way to put a MILDLY scorable shot is to have the left hook more than the right, and after an hour or 2, both sides will hook equally... there is no symetrical pattern that gives a fair shake for the duration of the day... some are more exploitable than others, but none stay equal and fair...
as for only showing up when you know what's there and only if that is in your wheel house, you will never become a truly good player with that mentality..
-
I agree no pattern is fair someone is going to have the advantage, whether it is the straighters, the boomers, the righties, or the lefties, a combination. How would you know unless you shoe up and bowl. I will be there reguardless of the pattern because I want to bowl. Plain and simple and to the point.

Did you guys finally decide on a modified house pattern or a different shot?

"Typical House Bowler"
-
The only thing I've heard is its going to be 39 feet.
-
I really hope it plays balanced FOR ALL 8 GAMES... it would be a shame to not have a 2nd annual if the sponsor is on board... typical Kegel patterns don't stay balanced for the duration..
-
I heard the 39ft "Mop & Bucket" pattern will be laid out. Now nobody will have an advantage, cause every board in the house will be oiled differently!
-
REALLY!!!!
What the HELL is Well Balanced?
I guess you never bowled a tournament in your life. Someone is going to have an advantage, whether it is a Kegel pattern, PBA pattern, House pattern, or mop and bucket pattern!!!! The winner and the cashers are the ones that make the adjustments and make good shots...
-
Dear saw.. The difference in what you know about dressing lanes and I know about dressing lanes would fill an encyclopedia.. I have 40 years experience and learned from ABC / PBA Hall of Famers.. I hosted numerous FAIR tournaments back when I managed houses and supervised lane maintenance for Fair Lanes / Texas and General Bowling in Alexandria and Annandale.. Just because you don't know how doesn't mean it can't be done..
-
After practice: bet on lefties..
-
Told ya so..
-
Well now that we know who everyone is...Good tournament overall, well run with good action. Hope to see better things for the 2nd annual.
-
Could someone post results please. Had to work and could not bowl. Thanks.

In addressing "Racefan" all I can say is that my goal is to try and provide tournaments the best way I know how while holding down a full time job, meeting the needs of my 5 kids and significant other, be a member of my bowling association and also try to bowl a little. I regret that I don't have the time to sit with the lanesman at each center where we are having a tournament and work hours on patterns that are going to play fairly for the entire length of the event. Perhaps "Racefan" you'd like to take all that experience you have and start running a few tournaments.
"Saw"s comment is exactly right, on any given pattern somone is going to have an advantage. Let's not get away from the fact that the lefties that cashed are not your run of the mill southpaws... they all can play. Actually, there was talent all through those that competed so why can't we just give the props to the individuals that bowled well and let it go at that and come back and get them next time.
In the end, I hope all or most all were satisfied at the event as a whole not only with the lane condition but how it was run. Brian and I will gladly take suggestions as we are always looking to improve. Hopefully the sponsor liked what he saw and will be available for future events.
Again, thanks to all that participated.
Chuck

Chuck,
Thanks for running the tournament.
Stop trying to make reasonable points with Kevinracefan. He is a classic lefty / righty ignoramous. When you are discussing lefty versus righty the talent of the lefty must must must be ignored.
When one or two lefties do well they are easy on the left. When no lefties do well it is a fair condition.
I does not matter if you have "40 years of experience" or 6 PBA regional titles ignorance is ignorance.
There is NO WAY (not with today's equipment and lane surfaces) to balance out the condition. One style or another will match up better than others...lefty / righty...cranker / stroker...
Please ignore the peanut gallery and keep on doing the great job you are doing.

Chuck,
Thank you for running your tournament (s) and also for your staff that does a great job. There was alot of lefties in the top 10 but so be it. The lefties that did cash are pretty good players.
Will I bowl another one of Chuck's Tournaments on a kegel or whatever pattern.... Hell Yes.
Make shots and go from there... I choked it off the last 2 games.

Wow, some interesting responses.. Chuck, I have always appreciated and admired the tournaments you've run in the past.. I dare say I have supported them as much as anyone even though I am 30 years removed from my "A" game.. I was expecting something terrific in this event, and the format and administration were excellent as usual.. But the lane condition was disappointing.. I posted my concerns on Jan 28, page 1, and the results show I was spot on... (Here's a hint, less oil almost never works fairly, unless you're wanting a brickyard). This is not an attack on the lefties who cashed, as I realize they all have ability.. But facts are facts.. I had concerns.. I called the outcome right after practice, and was 100
% correct.. Dear RotoMike: not many people would call Lenny Nicholson or Mo Pinel an ignoramous.. You must be one smart cookie.. Then you say there's absolutely no way and expose yourself as as a blithering sour grapes lefty who must not have cashed.. Perhaps you should do some homework.. There's tons of people in your area who knew me when I was managing Alexandria and Annandale.. I doubt any of them would characterize me as ignoramous.. I had great relationships with earlier operators of the shop you alledgedly work at.. Mr's Roboinette and Francomano knew me well as we always did the ABC trips together (and I have a 2nd & 9th, what's your record?), but you were just a teenager then.. Much to learnm then, and obviously much to learn now... Ask around or run your mouth.. Makes me no difference.. You're the one looking stupid to those that know history.. Chuck, I hope and expect J O Spice to return.. The event ran great, as usual.. K. Tillery
-
Ooops.. Forgive my typing on my crackberry.. And jim Robinette.. And learn has no M in reality..
-
The point is that with TODAY’s lane surfaces and conditioning ANY pattern can be manipulated by TODAY'S current bowling balls and Abralon pads.
Talent today has more to do with recognizing the proper ball, layout and surface to matchup to the applied condition with the ability to execute shots as secondary. To the hysterical / historical amongst us it might seem as an affront to the game we grew up playing.
I think it was Mo Pinel who said something to the effect of…”you cannot out execute a bad ball reaction”
Bottom line is this is the game we have.
Now onto the fun stuff….
“.. I called the outcome right after practice, and was 100
% correct.”. – How prophetic of you. That goes right along with the great ones like “there will be daylight tomorrow followed by night."
“Not many people would call Lenny Nicholson or Mo Pinel an ignoramous.” – I’m not calling them an ignoramus… I am however suggesting that you might be one. And name dropping will get you nowhere. I have met and spent plenty time with Mo Pinel and have met Len Nicholson and Fred Borden and Bill Taylor (R.I.P.) and Don Johnson (R.I.P.) and Ray Edwards and Brian Purcell and Hank Boomershine and I spoke with Richie Sposato last night in Syracuse. Maybe you met them and have attended the same seminars that I did BACK IN THE DAY. I also know that Resurfaced By Us did the work on Annandale and Alexandria BACK IN THE DAY. I was there for at least one of them at Annandale.
If you think that you are parroting or speaking for Len Nicholson and Mo Pinel then you are suggesting that you have no original thoughts of you own. I also think Len Nicholson and Mo Pinel might disagree with you.
“Then you say there's absolutely no way and expose yourself as as a blithering sour grapes lefty who must not have cashed” – Actually I didn’t get the chance to bowl this tournament. I had no transportation due to a seized transmission. I have however bowled in Chuck’s tournaments before and am very familiar with the conditions at Forest Hill. I’m just tired of the broad brush approach you used in your assessment.
“There's tons of people in your area who knew me when I was managing Alexandria and Annandale” – BACK IN THE DAY
“I doubt any of them would characterize me as ignoramus.” – Let’s let them tell us that if there are any still alive.
“I had great relationships with earlier operators of the shop you alledgedly work at.. Mr's Roboinette and Francomano knew me well” – BACK IN THE DAY…How many decades ago was that???? Robinette and Francomano have been out of the area for DECADES. I’ve been working there for 12 years. I have been in the pro shop business for 29 years. Stop by the alleged shop on Friday I will be happy to chat with you. Come by around lunch time and I will buy you some Chipotle.
“we always did the ABC trips together (and I have a 2nd & 9th, what's your record?)” – BACK IN THE DAY..Are you feeling threatened? I have a 300 on a certified Sport Condition. Since it wasn’t bowled with wooden balls I guess it means nothing to you. Not to mention it totally avoids the point I was making which you skipped.
..” Much to learnm then, and obviously much to learn now... Ask around or run your mouth.. Makes me no difference.. You're the one looking stupid to those that know history” - I know the history. Your ramblings and constant anchoring to the past quickly slides you into to the category of clairvoyants who claim they saw the demise of bowling coming five decades ago but only now are offering “solutions”.
Let's move on.
-
Wow, this topic has turned into quite the discussion. It would be nice to not be hiding behind a keyboard and saying things you more than likely wouldn't say to each others face. I have no valuable input into the argument, because I am much too young compared to both of you guys. KT, having spent a lot of time around you, and not knowing 'Rotomike' i can't say much to his credentials. I know you know your stuff and while some of your ideals may be unorthodox, you're usually spot-on. I've done my best to learn a lot about the sport and some of the things being said are just straight up irrelevant attacks. KT (Kevinracefan) has experience that I can say with a lot of certainty not many people have.
Chuck, well run, well executed and as I said before, I hope there's a 2nd annual, as well as all of your other tournaments.
It all boils down to execution, and those who execute the most, prevail.
-
"Come by around lunch time and I will buy you some Chipotle."
-I'll be stopping by in that case. LOL.
But about the JO Spice discussion. I am right-handed and thought they were fine. I felt like I could have gone +80 to cash but made some mistakes along the way. They really started to open up on the right after about game 5, I just couldn't find a way to get the swisher 7 out, lol.
The lefties are going to have their day, as are the righties. It's really a moot point to bring up the left-right issue, as it all evens out. Forest Hill plays well on the left no matter what "pattern" was put out, and most everyone knew that going in.
-
Frankly Mike, it sounds to me like you feel insecure about yourself. Experience comes with age. So what if Kevin bowled well 20, 30 years ago. Knowledge and learning do not dull with age. Physical skill can and will. No one can bowl that well forever. You can sit and pick apart an argument, that's great, and 20 years from now when you want to talk about bowling no one will tell you repeatedly "BACK IN THE DAY". Does that mean his knowledge is useless? Hardly. You're the one that looks like an ignoramus now.
-
Nice of you to defend your friend... I'm not the one who first threw my credentials out there in an attempt to defend my position...
The point I was making (I guess inelegantly by mentioning some of what I know and where I have been) was there is no franchise on knowledge. The knowlegde base in the world of bowling is constantly being revised by new technology. It is very valuable to know where we came from but you also have keep up with the current changes.
You too are invited down to the alleged shop for some Chipotle and a chat as well. I absolutly believe in the exchange of ideas.

RotoMike.. The physics of friction areas and slick areas do not know what era we're in.. Things I learned while working for hall of famers from the 60's did not change just because lane finish changed from lacquer to epoxy.. Now did they change from epoxy to tabletops.. Friction is still friction and slick is still slick.. Yes, new equipment can blow holes in a pattern quicker, but no one tries to carve tracks when one is put there from the beginning.. For long formats the need is to create friction and slick to be as fair as possible for as long as possible.. If you youtube the latest Dick Weber "know the wood" segments, you will see an excellent attempt at a NON symmetrical pattern that does this.. They had the heaviest oil from R15 to R20.. In extended play, both sides will be deep and in about the same spots.. That's how it's done..the same applies in the 70's, 90's, and now...I worked for and with people who freely taught me what they know because it was in their interests to do so.. No smoke and mirrors.. The successes I had doing this 30 years ago still work today.. The physics didn't change totally because the surfaces did.. Lastly, thanks for a more civil exchange on your subsequent posts.. Your shop is about 100 miles away, too far for a burrito bomb from chipotle, but if I'm ever in Fairfax with time, I'd love to re-visit Carmen Don..
-
Ooops.. NOR did they change etc.
-
Now, now boys... if I had known all this ruckus would be from one tournament ... we would have put on one sooner!!

. Really though, isn't the real point is that no one really just comes out and bowls anymore. It has to be all about this pattern or that pattern or it favors lefties or righties. I mean c'mon guys, if really meant that much, the lefties would never bowl because they are outnumbered 3 to 1 by shear genetics.
I know both of you (Mike & Kevin) and appreciate each's participation and support of all the tournaments at FHL. My main issue about this "ordeal" is that, as an individual whose sole attempt for the last many years is to just try to provide events for ALL to participate in, it's already very difficult to put together a tournament that has the very facets that make it worth bowling in. Low entry fees and high prize funds do not go hand in hand so to have both you need help. Along with that is the planning and functionality of the tournament which includes trying to decide what would be both "fair" and attract the most people.
So my point ... and this is/was directed to Kevin ... is that all this takes time. As this has to be a labor of love for the sport (as neither I or staff take any expense $) I don't have the time to sit down with the center and try to work up lanes patterns that are going to be fair throughout the length of the event. It already seems a shame that one has to put a label on what is going to be bowled on. "Back in the day" they didn't do this, we just showed up, put our shoes on and bowled. Now guys won't come because the pattern is too long, it's too short, it's not heavy enough. I mean come on.
So Kevin, if you want to be the one to put your extensive knowledge to work, perhaps you and Mike can have that lunch (with a few cocktails) and formulate a plan and a pattern and I'll run a tournament using it. Other than that, I guess there's not much hope for the sport. LOL!!
-
WOW!!!! I love this stuff!!!!
Come on, Who cares if the left has the twigg or the right has bounce in the track, SHOE UP AND BOWL!
The lefties that dominated the tournament are pretty good and have won or cashed at several tournaments and have even won PBA Regional Titles for Christ Sake. Every pattern is going to have flaux and someone is going to have the advantage. AT forest Hill, the left side is good on whatever you put down, plain and simple! Deal with it! It is a numbers game and most right handers think that 10 (the second arrow) is playing out.... That is why the pattern did not wall up at 10 ( from game 3 on) like it did on the left because majority of right handers always play the track (between 15 and 10) so that means that the hold is gone by game 3 and now the entire field is chasing left and the lefties are in their confort zone playing 10 to 5! Am I blaming the pattern, NO, Am I blaming the right handers, YES!!! You do not have to throw your most aggressive ball all the time! Shiny balls do strike as much as dull ones! The first arrow is there for a reason! So Kevin you are right, Mike you are right! So go have lunch and make up and be happy. Let me know so I can join you 2 for some refreshments!

This is why I'm taking up golf.
It's a pain in the a$$ to please everyone, and nobody ever comes to a compromise. As Schaden said, every tournament someone has an advantage. Crankers, straighties, righties, lefties, two-handers, etc. Now if righties would learn to adjust and play different areas on the lane with different releases, maybe they could compete with the lefties (on this occasion). But see, nobody wants to practice. They all want $hit baby fed to them so they can inflate their egos (and scores) beyond their wildest dreams. I'm not going to rant about ridiculous "top hats", but these conditions don't help this issue. When the game gets back to a "practice makes perfect" mentality, and not a "complain when I don't get spoon fed" mentality, maybe steps can be made to improve. Until then, I will be getting a nice tan at the golf course.

Dan, you shall from now on be named "Peacemaker Dan"...
and I agree 100% with your assessment that righties are terrible at lane management... lefties know how to take a "slice of cheese" off the edge of the oil, and righties want to blow holes through the middle of it... as usual, I'll blame the balls, LOL...
that ain't how we "learnt" it in the '70's, LOL...
