PA State Tournament
« on: April 03, 2016, 08:13:33 AM »
The PA state tournament started this weekend. Did anybody go, if so how did the patterns play? I will be bowling mothers day weekend.

Agree with Belgeron. Lanes were very difficult however I threw the ball poorly. Only excuse I really had was lack of sleep the couple days right around and during the tournament due to my own stupidity working in the yard after dusk with shorts on and getting bit up by mosquitoes.

Hard to add more to what Bel had said. There is a shot there and both houses seemed very similar with d/s house having sharper backends. When I threw the ball well I would hit the pocket nicely but left a whole lot of ringing tens. Trying some movements didn't help much as I would then just miss the pocket. Awful spare shooting didn't help.

I'm still glad that it wasn't a walled up house shot even though I bowled poorly. I can't speak for others however. I would like another shot at it but rested up much better.

No one in my group bowled exceptionally well. We did singles/doubles first at 8AM on Saturday. Backends were flying. Anything pulled slightly would miss left by a bunch. Spare shooting for left side spares was a challenge, and I hooked past a couple 4-pins that I thought I had made.
I had some success going up 7 board with a Storm Ride and switching to my Dirty Look after the shot changed just into game 2. Managed a 617 with a 160 game in singles, and shot 700 in doubles. I threw pretty hard, and the ball would just exit stage left when it hit the dry. Great reaction with the Dirty Look.
The team shot was another story. We again had fresh oil, but nothing in the way of backend. I threw the ball like crap Sunday. Pulled everything for half the block. Just could not carry more than a double, and those were rare. I needed aggressive with some surface, but I left it at home since I didn't need it for singles/doubles and I live near both houses. Didn't thing I'd need it. I was wrong. Shot 544 to kill any chance at all-events.
Hope you all have better luck at figuring team out than I did. I needed something more aggressive than my Jet Turbulence.

Well this past weekend was very interesting to say the least.

We rolled doubles and singles last Friday and we had no backend, it was slick with a huge out of bounds. If you got it outside of 12 to 10 depending on the pair you were on it would not recover, I saw a lot of 2-10 splits across the house. I was able to squeak out a 558 and 561 with a couple of missed spares in the mix. Saturday team shot was about the same condition with a little less of an out of bounds and I was able to play a little straighter and managed a 586 series with a couple more opens.

I'm not a sport shot bowler and don't have much experience on sport shots, but I think if had some experience or knowledge on that shot I could hit it and bowl well.

So are there any rumblings (good or bad) going on about the overall experience of the tournament this year?

I for one didn't think it was to bad, but for someone at my level of bowling experience being on the lower end, I think it would be nice to know what the shot is ahead of time so that you might have a chance to practice on the shot somewhere before you head to the tournament.

I think it was ridiculous.  99.9% of PA Bowlers throw on some type of house shot.  Mive to the state tournament and it's a completely different shot.  In my opinion it eliminated most Bowlers from having any chance.  The only one who benefited were 1) the really high handicappers - lane conditions have minimal impact and 2) the very high average who bowl tournaments on many different conditions and may even bowl in sport leagues.  The rest of the people who average between 150 and 210 were pretty much S.O.L.

I'm not saying that you should be able to close your eyes, throw the ball anywhere, and strike, but it would be nice to hit the pocket on at least reasonably well thrown shots.

I think they didn't announce the pattern change because they wanted a reasonable turnout.  I hope the association was taking notes during (what I imagined to be) just about every shift.  Lots of unhappy folks.

This is the range I fit into and I couldn't agree more with what you said. I don't go into this tournament expecting or want to have a cake shot but, I don't go into it thinking I have no shot and that's what it seemed like this year. Oh well, maybe next year will be different.

I completely disagree with any sort of house shot being at the state tournament. It is a tournament and should be treated as such.  I like bowling on harder conditions and bowled awful at states. I'll own it. I am surely in the minority but I would rather bowl in a tournament that has low scores rather than check out the standings after the first week and see that the leader in scratch singles threw 850 and the team scratch is 3700 plus.

Last year I walked into the team house just as a squad was finishing up and noticed a guy hollering about how horrible the conditions were and how awful the state tournament was for putting down that condition. I asked what ball he was throwing. His reply was that it was the only one that he owned and that he had it for about the last ten years. Those days have been gone for a long time. I don't think it's necessary to bring in a truck load of balls but at a tournament you should have an option or two.

Did anybody get a chance to read the tournament directors letter about the lane conditions? What do you think about it?

I have it at home but haven't looked at it for a while. Afraid that Bryan will ask Berks association to put in an easy shot next year.

I don't think so much an easier shot, but maybe not as challenging as last years is what they might be thinking.
