If you were going to bowl in a tournament where would you rather bowl and why?

Bowl America Shirley (Edsall)

AMF Annandale

US Bowl

You opinions are greatly appreciated.

    Stephen,

I would bowl a tournament at US Bowling.  The new owners are committed to improving the center.  They recently installed new MURREY MML-3000 synthetic lanes and textured approaches.  Their oiling patterns are now more consistent than before.  They have more improvements in the works which will be rolled out in the next couple of months.  I can tell you from experience that it's so much better to bowl on the new synthetic lanes than the old wood-guardian overlay lanes that they had.

Also the location is near 95 and the Beltway, so its convenient to get to.  The staff is friendly and is ready to accomodate tournaments.  They've hosted Regional PBA events and VMSBT tournaments. Sports Plus/Carmen Don Pro Shop is around the corner.

I miss bowling the bowl4money tournaments that you hosted at Bowl America Falls Church.  US Bowling is a great place to hold that tournament.

Having just bowled the VMSBT event at US bowl this past Sunday, I will agree that the lanes and approaches are great, especially the textured approaches.  However, the place still needs a lot of improvement.  I doubt that 5-10 minutes went by without a service call during the 6 games. Anything from racks dropping pins, not setting a full rack, 180s, scoring problems, etc.  Those who were there can blame me for the announcement about not putting towels, etc on the monitors (which was promptly ignored).

On top of that, at the end of 6 games, my left hand (I wear a glove on the right) was almost black from all of the dirt and crap my ball picked up from the lanes and ball return.  Until they take care of the machines, I'm not sure if I'll bowl there again.  The ONLY reason I was there this past week was because of the new lanes.  Had the old wood been there, I would not have set foot in the place.

Yes they have had PBA reagionals there, I was at he last ow SR Regionals there, and the general consenus afer the last one was never again.

As for the other two places, Bowl America Shirley is almost always a high scoring shootout, and it's been a few years since I've been in AMF Annandale, but I think it's like any oher AMF house.

big boi,  you are so right about corner pins at Shirley, especially (trying) to make a 10 pin.  Other than that I don't find the approaches there that bad, maybe I'm just lucky.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions...does anyone know who would be the person to talk to at US Bowl?

  • You can talk with Kenny Latino.  He's the center manager, and runs the Saturday Morning Youth league that I help him coach.  I'll PM you his contact info if I can find it.

UPDATE: Just PM'd you the info.  Let me know if you need me to resend.
