The two houses that were chosen are complete opposite. Lincolnway in York, has really dry outside, you have to play deep to keep the ball off of the head pin. Most league bowlers there are older, and the center does not have a bar. Very little parking in front of the center, and if you use the side door by lane 28, you have a flight of steps to go up. The pro shop staff needs some major help before it has States, the guy that runs it tends to be confrontational. The concourse is very narrow from lanes 1-12. The center is very clean, but still has an outdated lane machine in my opinion. The other center is actually located in Hanover, Pa., several miles away from the other center. this center recently put new lane beds and approaches in, it has 40 lanes, a bar and a nice snack bar, the pro shop needs a little help in staffing. The concourse are is very good from the counter down towards the game room. The lower part of the center is a little tight, but not as tight as Lincolnway. The shot is very decent there. But I believe the tournament director directs the centers into what pattern should look like and play like. Good luck and hope to see you there, I will be assisting at the Hanover center on Sundays.

I will be heading up in May also. Thanks for the info, sounds like it might be a little interesting this year with the bowling being done at an older house.

There are a few nice hotels down the road from Hanover Bowling Center, not sure of the names, they are located off Eisenhower Drive if that helps.

No hotels around Lincolnway, not much around it other then other businesses and a school, so, no liquor or booze. the official hotel is the Cross Keys Inn. Its north of Hanover Bowling Center and sits on Route 30, should you would have a straight shot to Lincolnway in York. Best of luck at States.

So how did your weekend turn out motorbike?
Title: Re: PA State Tournament
Post by: motorbike on March 29, 2010, 08:33:59 PM
My weekend was pretty good. No great, but I can't complain. 633 in singles, 678 in doubles and 630 something in team (all scratch-don't know about handicap) The rest of the guys that went with us didn't bowl for sh!t.

Hanover was a nice center. The bar was a big hit! The lanes were a little tight there. There was a definite out of bounds, about 7 to the gutter. The left side looked extremely tough because there weren't as many bowlers breaking down the shot. Swinging it just didn't work in the first block. For the second block the track area was hooking early so I jumped inside where the shot was and bowled good.

Lincolnway was a nice center as well. Older center, but clean. Wooded approaches and synthetic lanes. Not sure if they were overlays. This shot was totally different than Hanover. They ran the lanes about 20 minutes before we started. not sure if that had anything to do with it, by the backends were flying. The outside was not dry. Not as bad as Hanover, but the dryer backend probably helped. I saw alot of splits it the first game. I threw a ball with surface to control the breakpoint, and had a 258 out of the gate. Opened in game 2 in the 10th for a 206, and game 3 tried moving inside. My game went downhill from here.  Left a couple 2-8-10's and had my worst game of the weekend.
There was a guy a couple pairs from us that had 780 playing 4th arrow out of the gate.
If you have any specific questions let me know.

TJ... i haven't bowled yet but I bowl league at Hanover and was told that they put more on the out sides. This center is alway tight to start and with more on the outsides will mae it even more tight. I have heard that the backend are pretty flippy at Lincolnway for team. Good luck this weekend.

TJ, I want to back up Adam's statement, I practiced after the squads were done at both places and I noticed that Lincolnway, which is using a borrowed lane machine, has not enough hold, even on the left side, you will need to play a little deeper and stay deep to catch any hold. If you try to swing it whats so ever, it will be early hook. At Hanover, with newer lane panels, the track isn't worn in as much, plus they are using 2 new IONS they bought from Bowlers Supply. The pattern is much tighter, but if you play more up the boards off the gutter, thats where the only friction I seen on neither the left side or right side. I used in practice a CELL with a 45x4x50 with weight hole on the VAL and played the ditched and have 700 plus for three games, I tired the 2 of my three Riots, those two were too weak, I going to try Riot #3 I had drilled last week when I practice there this Saturday. I used a Mars with a leverage drilling at Lincolnway and a Neptune label drilling, I did find some hold at about 16-18 board and used a Mutant with a 30x3 1/2x60 layout.

Quick review here...

I am a medium - high speed guy (17-18mph per Hanover's machines), Medium to high rev tweener, high tracker and threw an Elite Black Label all 9 games..

2nd shift Team 7pm Saturday -- The lanes played fairly open to start, we had a few guys start out strong, but as the heads went away people get stubborn and don't get deep enough fast enough.  I jumped way left and was trying to keep a tight breakpoint by the 8th frame of the first game.  Went back 5, front 6, ring 10.  Don't be afraid to try to get the ball only to 13 or 14 at the breakpoint from the left ditch.  201 - 255 - 200 for me.  I just couldn't execute consistently and missed some spares.  $40 in brackets/high game $45 out.

Fresh Singles -- Lanes started really tight, and I had a pretty terrible look to start.  Found something straight up 10 (maybe a small swing 12-10), but anything outside of that was dead to me and I didn't have a lot of hold.  Missed spares all set.  By the 2nd game they opened up a little and I kicked a bit further in.  I was still at 15 at the arrows, out to about 8 at the breakpoint and pretty much stayed there.  Carry was bad and spare shooting was worse.  5 single pin wiffs.  167-218-178.  $50 in brackets/high game $0 out.

Doubles -- Had a very similar look to the end of singles.  Lanes were a bit more open and I had a little tug room inside (still no push out though).  Stayed pretty much the same spot all three games (only small moves left).  End up around 17 at the arrows and 10 at the breakpoint.  Shot spares better but had no carry.  2 opens total 212-214-217.  $50 in brackets $135 out.  Got lucky with a couple of matchups and bad 3rd games from good bowlers..

Net $40 from brackets shooting 1860.  Not great but not all bad.  There are definitely some score to be shot out there if you can carry though.  They will be lower on a whole than last year for sure..

Went out April 24-25. Why does the team event have to be in the smallest of the two houses? And why do bowlers insist in bringing the whole family to watch?
Sorry. Just a pet peeve of mine.
We bowled Team at 7PM Saturday night. Sticky approaches lead to not a very good read of the conditions for me initially. I'm right handed, and I started out swinging 10 to about 7. Kept going high, so I kept moving in. Could not keep an Encryption Code off the nose for a 162. Switched to a Magic Touch keeping it tight 14 to 11 and found hold and carry. Finished 242, 238. Had a cranker next to me swinging 19 to around 13 and shooting a 299. He deserved the perfecto...ringing 10. Late shift with no oil for the squad lead to very dry outsides. Gotta keep it tight inside.
Minor events at Hanover were at 4:30 PM on Sunday. Fresh oil. What a beautiful thing. Got to play with my Solaris Requiem. Started out swinging 8 to about 6 and opened with a 290. That'll get you through a couple brackets. Second game, carry went south. I could still hit the pocket, but left four 10-pins in a row.
Made a slight move right with the feet that worked for a couple frames, then jumped high. So inside we went gradually, watching ball reaction as the lanes transitioned. Nothing too drastic, but I had to adjust slightly every 4-5 frames to keep carrying. Ended the doubles swinging 11 to 8. Tighter was definitely better. Singles was 290/205/223-718. Doubles was 237/235/228-700.
I thought it was a fair shot, but you had to keep up with it. Carry on a tighter line was better than swinging it out a little too much. Lots of corner pins. Hanover is a really nice center. Wide open spaces.
I'm not a cranker by any stretch, but I get decent hand in the ball. Speed was about 16.5mph according to the shot tracker. All in all, a pretty decent showing for me. Hope this helps you guys so you can cut into my prize money. Good luck.

I bowled last night in the team event at Lincolnway on the Fresh.

Shot started fairly flat. In my opinion, my teammates played the lanes incorrectly by starting too far left. With the way I tend to play the lanes, when I'm playing farther right than everyone else to start, there is a problem.

I was throwing a Rico drilled Flash Force. There was a TON of push to the hole if you keep the ball in front of you. On the fresh, it doesnt really matter how much hand you have, you dont want to try to give away the pocket and try to swing it back. Carry is less than optimal doing that and the look isnt the greatest anyway. I started with 6-1 the 1st frame, then plugged away with a 4 bagger and 2 individual strikes for 214.

Game 2 I had to cheat a little left and the Flash Force wasnt reading the lanes properly. 4 single pins in 5 frames with 3 different adjustments. Switch balls to a Vapor Zone. Moved about 7 and 5 left. Go to a different zone to read the extreme puddle. Rung a 10 pin, then 5 bagger. I noticed better pin carry when I laid off the release---again, if you are used to your ball hooking late, I dont think you'll get optimal pin carry. The ball needed to quit a little for me.

Game 3 Front 6, Solid 9, 3-6-10, strike, 10 pin, strike. 246. Ended up with 696.

I was clean after the 1st frame of the night. I was on 23 and 24. 23 had a hook spot that opened up that killed the guys with slower ball speed---if they played the puddle they didnt carry, if they played right of the puddle, they were high. 24 played pretty soft in comparison.

The Vapor Zone probably would have been good to start the night. Smooth consistent reaction going forward on the pattern is really all you need on the fresh.

I bowled on a pair with Mike Runk, Steve Sneidman, Jeremy Gilbert, Kevin Smith, and a few other solid bowlers. There were intermittent spots where we would have something going, but noone sustained anything. Alot of 620s and 630s shot.
Bowling S+D today.

Singles and Doubles----

Saturday, Fresh oil squad. We bowled on lanes 39+40 for singles, 37+38 for doubles.

In singles I got tricked into playing the shot a little farther right than I should have. I started out 3-6-9-10 (spare), 4-7-10 (got 2) because there was no push where I decided to play them. I made a jump left and went with a similar release to Friday night. Trying to lay off the revs a little bit to control the break point and the ball reaction. This was exactly what needed to happen. I was again throwing my Vapor Zone. I threw the next 8 strikes, then left a 2 pin for 255.

The last 2 games were very similar. A smattering of awful shots in the middle of a bunch of great shots. 2nd game 247 with a jersey 9 pin where I was distracted on the approach and a jersey squasher 10 pin where I was more distracted. I had a 4 pin the 2nd ball of the 10th. The last game, I started with a single pin (I think a 9 pin), then double, yank (3-9), triple, yank (6-10), double, solid 10 pin. For 230+. I ended with 737 I believe. 1 open in game 1. We ended up playing the shot way left because of how much we had broke them down. We started at a pretty comfortable 17-12 or 11 look and just migrated left. Ended up that deep fall back was by far my best look. The ball couldn’t go high, but couldn’t help but go flush (when I didn’t throw the ball terrible).

Moved to the doubles pair---knew the pair would be a little tighter than what we had left behind because I saw where the guys were playing. Backends were sloppy/unpredictable. I moved 3 and 3 right to start and went strike, then 2-4-10 (which I made), then tried to go up the shot a little more. I figured on more push on the pair---I threw a double where both shots were VERY high flush. I moved a little and threw a couple good shots. Then a bad shot, left a 6-10. Struck in the 9th and 10th, then left a 10 pin on the 2nd ball of the 10th. 247

2nd game, I started out with 5 straight spares. Lost my look a little. Made a ball change in frame 4, then switched back in frame 5. Left a 10 pin, then doubled. Figured I might be able to strike out for 240+ again---my partner stone 8s, I leave a blower 7. Instead of both of us shooting 240+ (which we both did in game 1) we both shoot clean 220+. I had 222 as I tripled then got 7 or 8 to finish.

The last game was a struggle. 10 pin, triple, fast 8, double. 8th frame I made a big move because my last 2 strikes on the right lane were trip 4-10s. I make as good as shot as I could, and ring a 10 pin. Oh well. My ball comes back---and has a 2 inch gouge out of the ball. I’m not one to complain about this, because stuff happens---but it was a little frustrating. Another tap at an inopportune time, then my ball has a chunk taken out of it. I miss the spare on a terrible shot. Just poor execution, no other excuses. Other than my 1st frame washout in team, my only missed spare. I weak 10 in the 9th and spare, then throw an awful shot in the 10th which I convert the spare, then 2-8-10 on the fill. It was like the ring 10 in the 8th knocked the wind out of my sails a bit. 678

My notes on this place are simple---play the push as long as you can and get ready to bank left. Because when the lanes go, they disappear. Noticed it on both pairs. Was lucky to have guys playing similar lines and strategies, so we all saw what was happening, making very subtle moves to stay ahead of it. The doubles pair I wasn’t so lucky. I had to totally change my look to get the ball to the pocket, much less carry.

All Events I ended with 2111 which I guess is in 4th or so on the scratch side after this weekend. We’ll see where it ends up.

Just bowled states for the first time this weekend.  Was nice to see a few fellow BR guys there!  Stats are in the profile - review from the left side....

Team house (Bowled Sat 5/8) - I thought the shot was fairly straight forward.  Seemed like all they did was block out 1-2-3-4-5 and man did it screw with people.  I went 202-201-239=642.  Wasn't really happy with it.  I threw it better than I scored, carry was rough in the center.  I left 5 seven pins, 4 eight pins, and 2 light 6 pins.  I never had more than a triple.  Put in $150 in brackets got $170 back.  I was in finals of 7 or 8 (not sure due to a tie in round 2).  I used a pin under 3.5 with 2000 on the cover.  I faded 7-8 from 10-11 at the arrows to start and ended up at about 13/14 to finished.

Minor Events (Bowl Sun 5/9) - I thought this was a typical house shot and can see why there are some big numbers coming out of here.  I used an Emerald Vibe with a 9 inch weight hole (Pin over, long and strong baby!).  I went 247-246-210 = 703 for singles.  Put $75 in got $270 back.  Finals in all 15 brackets, 100% = unheard of.  I played the shot outside targeting 6/7 to start and looking 5 down lane.  Kept 5 all day and just drifted right in the fronts.  I had miss in and out, make 2 errant shots and other than that it was nothing but 7 pins and 8 pins.  Clean 30 for 703 in singles.  Doubles - moved pairs and I could not strike on the right lane.  Took me until the first shot of the last game to knock em all down.  I had 180-183-214 = 577.   642-703-577=1922 (+122)  I will take it.  Wasn't best carry ever but overall solid scoring.  I will be back to give it another chance with the lady and see what happens.

Hope this helps.  Feel free to ask some questions.

I also bowled team event this past weekend at Lincolnway. I thought they were pretty tight to start but opened up a little as the day went on. Although I didnt score well the first game I thought I threw the ball fairly well. I only missed pocket twice in the first game leaving some very ugly splits for a whopping 154. Out of bounds for me was about 8 and out. There was hardly any room for error if you missed right. If you missed left you were sure to go through the nose or go brooklyn. I had to play really firm and straight. Last two games I ended up with 204 & 200 using a Bedlam the whole day. My team also struggled quite a bit for the exception of our third bowler. He rolls conventional with a little bit of hook at the end of the lane using a smoking inferno. He played very straight up the boards and was very consistent. He averages 172 and had games of 174, 176 & 178. He was the only one on our team to hit average. My dad struggled the first two games for 166 & 132 but came around last game for a solid 190. He started using an Onyx Vibe but switched to a duller and smoother ball in the Almighty. He tried to hook it the first two games but was just too inconsistent. Last game he was piping it up 10 for the 190. He only averages around 170 as well. Our left hander did not fair so well. He had games of 183, 175, and 176. He was lost from the get go. Very inconsistent. Our second bowler was an older guy using a storm Dimension. He did not do so well either. He was about 100 pins under average for the day! He is about a 180 average bowler. He was inconsistent all day. So all-in-all we had a good time as a team even though we didnt score. We knew going in that it was going to be a tight shot and it was. Hope this helps some of you guys and good luck.

Majik, I'm bowling this weekend also. Maybe we'll cross paths on Sunday. We bowl the 9:00 a.m. team squad and then again at 4 p.m. We usually bowl two team squads back-to-back. I guess our organizer couldn't arrange it this year. My D/S squad is at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Majik came up and introduced himself during our third game of the Sunday morning team squad. It was nice meeting him.

In 12 games I had a high in the 240s and low in the 170s.  Totaled around 2500. Never put anything together for a big game or set.

During the fifth frame of my second team set on Sunday afternoon, while setting my feet I noticed that something was odd. From the center dot on the approach to either dot left or right, there are five boards between them instead of four.  That was why what I thought had been a two board move with my feet had actually been three and I came up light. We were on 17 and 18. Lanes 19 and 20 had the same thing.  I went down and looked at 23 and 24 (where we had been in the morning) and those lanes were normal. So remember to check the approaches when making moves with your feet.

Keith it was nice to meet you as well...glad you faired better than I did.  I really need to work on my game.  I really struggled with consistency with my feet and armswing all weekend...not to mention that I just couldn't seem to get a good reaction from any of my equipment, but if you are inconsistent with footwork and armswing...can't really blame the equipement or center.  I just could never get comfortable.
