Bowl America Centers' Approaches? (Long Rant)
« on: August 24, 2009, 11:01:35 AM »
Just recently moved to the Washington DC area, and decided to take advantage of the fairly cheap practice at a few of the local Bowl America centers.  Unfortunately, I have not been impressed at all, and was wondering if most/all BA centers are similar to this.

First outing, I headed to BA Chantilly.  I go to slide on the approaches for the first time, and end up sliding forever.  So, this continues the entire practice session (most likely due to the amount of dust/debris on the approaches). The lanes themselves seemed alright, but all of my bowling balls were covered in belt marks/dirt when I was done (much more so than most centers).

The following weekend, I head over to BA Sterling (Dranesville) and practice on their USBC Open Championships pattern.  Pattern played moderately tough, but what made it even more difficult were the approaches.  This time, instead of sliding forever, I don't slide at all.  I decide to try and change soles a few times, still coming to a dead stop.  I may as well just bowled in my tennis shoes, because I wasn't going anywhere anyways when I slid. Had to stop after 4 games as I was afraid of incurring an injury to my back, leg, and/or hip (as I already have a bad hip and was in rehab for a few months this past summer).

Finally, I decided to try yet another BA center out this past Sunday at BA Gaithersburg. I think I may have put myself out of commission for about a week cause of this place. It was anyone's guess as to what the hell I was going to do at the line. One time I would stick, the next wouldnt stop at all. Once again, tried all different slide sole combinations, none could tame these god awful approaches. My blood really started to boil after I got done bowling and I began having back spasms, which have continued into this past week (I am 22 yrs old, and prolly too young for those to start happening). And, once again, my ball was basically grey in color by the end of the 3 games due to belt marks and dirt. I understand bowling alleys are dirty, but these places took that to a whole new level.  Oil is one thing, but a ball covered in belt marks and a film of dirt after 3 games is ridiculous.

On a more positive note, I did go practice at Fort Meade Lanes, and this place was near immaculate.  I am glad that I will be bowling league there, as the center seemed very well run and very clean. I am not a fan of synthetic approaches, but they seemed fairly consistent there.

Overall, BA centers have seem to have offered the cheapest practice rates around, but I think I would rather pay a little more to stay injury free.  Sorry for the rant, just wondering if any other locals have had similar issues.

As for Jack not knowing he fouled, he looked down at the lane and then stepped back off the lane.  He knew he fouled, he just didn't call it ant yes the Foul lights were not turned on which is typical for Columbia.  I have been bowling there for 20 years, 12 with Wayne working there and last year was the first year he was higher than me, so my record speaks for itself.  Call me a House man if you like, but I have cashed in City, State, and USBC Nationals "EVERY TIME I BOWL"

As for Tremper he was subbing on Wed night, not bowling at Columbia.  My money would be on ME over Wayne, or Joe over Wayne in the long run.

Wish I saw Jack go over the line, fighting my teams battle would have been even more classic! Two feet over the line and he did not slip, can only mean one thing! The heads are feeling the recession too since they did not have any of that clear lubricant on them. ROFL

CTK - You are correct, the folks who gave their 2¢ received a full refund that night. I am sure they thought they'd see that mild mannered Clark Kent they are use to, instead that got Darkman X. LMAO No doubt there were people "upset" about what went down and I am willing to live with that. You aren't going to make everyone happy regardless of what you do!!!

I must have been just too far away from the hubub wed.  I did not see or hear anything.  Damn it would have given me a good laugh to see the Darkman come out.  LOL

LOL The heads are definitely feeling it as well. My ball touches and turns left immediately!!!!

Yea it was pretty comical when you think about it.....

Scott that is a very bold statement. Some may think it is pure pride but I think of it as an outgoing statement. I do think that possibly in the LONG run yes there are others. With that being said if we are talking about just one night of league I would still feel comfortable with Wayne.

Security cameras on the foul line? You guys play hard for that $50 pot game!!!  LMAO

You know Jack aint gonna call a foul on himself and take himself out of the game.

Jack was not in the hunt. With one man to beat and I was counting that $50 before I got up in the 10th. CHA-CHING!

Wow..Really.. If you all are such "Great" bowlers then you should really step up to the plate. You should be able to adjust to ANY lane conditions. I'm not siding with anyone but WOW, where to start. As far as Jack fouling and EVERYONE saying something that night.. He stepped over the line(not slid) therefore the buzzer wouldn't have gone off and as far as him not falling, theres no oil on the first foot of the lane(just for this reason, fouling.) I don't see why the Gregors name was thrown out there, there was more than just the Gregors saying something. All folks that said something were looking out for the honesty and integrity of the game and of other bowlers. Which obviously there is some serious "lack there of" in this league, but I guess everyone is just trying to make a dollar. Another point to make..if Waynes lanes are sooo wonderful and "walled up" then how come everyone that rolls them isn't shooting anything, INCLUDING left handers.
