Sport shot centers in North Jersey
« on: November 05, 2004, 07:52:57 AM »
Anyone know of centers that have either sport shot leagues or put down sport shots in northern NJ?

Matawan (northern Monmouth county) is hardly northern NJ, but that's was the last location (Summer 2003) of any sport shot I knew about.

If you find any, David, please message me.

Summer is my time for more intensive suffering!

Hey man what's up?

I know Plaza Lanes in Madison ran a sport shot league for maybe 2 years or so but they stopped.

It's probably a good thing since that center has essentially gone to ****. All they care about are birthday parties. The house shot shows easily. I went there a few times in August on a Sunday morning. The fresh pattern consisted of a short length...I'd estimate around 37 feet or so. From the gutter to about the 5 board on both sides is completely dry. I had to play 30 out to 5 or so on the fresh shot because there simply is not enough oil on the lane.

Rockaway Lanes puts down PBA shots on I believe Sunday night...a couple of lanes get the shot though. Not sure how many people show up as I've yet to actually go up there since no one I know has a desire to ride up there. Plus I *think* they might charge those abyssmal weekend rates so that's not really motivating me to take a 30 minute drive. They don't have an actual sport shot league as far as I am aware of. It's weird IMO as they have a Kegel Kustodian oil machine. Only center in the Morris County area that has one as far as I know. The rest use Phoenix machines.

I've tried to see if anyone would put out a sport shot in Hanover Lanes. The last manager told me it was a bad idea. The current one doesn't really seem to have any desire to do so. But I think it is for the better as the house shot sucks and has no consistency whatsoever. But that's what happens when cheap lane conditioner is used.

I think I will check up at Rockaway though to see if the pro shop knows anything about sport shot leagues because I believe there has to be one somewhere around.  It can't be that no center has a lack of interest in sport shot leagues. I know Morris County should have one as there are a lot of serious bowlers in the area that would bowl in it. Problem is finding a center willing to do it. I really wish Nationwide didn't exist up here...I think there would be a better chance if everything was Brunswick Zone centers.

Nationwide...OMG you will never get any type of sport shot layed out.I heard they got a deal on some old oil and they bought what ever was left something like a few thousand gallons they are using it on both wood and snythetic lanes and i believe you can not use the same oil on both!

Hey man how's it going?

I know Al, good driller, will mention you next time I go up there.

Thanks for the info about the oil...that would definitely make sense as to why the shot has been so horrendous in terms of consistency. I've had word that the oil being used was cheap so I'm sure what you've said is the case. Someone I know is going to flip out when they hear this. Oh well.

Some nights all it does is carrydown so by the time you get to the 2nd or 3rd game you will be pulling out a heavy oil ball just to cut through the carrydown.

I'm really not happy with Nationwide. They don't care about the bowlers....they just care about their bottom line. Open bowling. People wonder why bowling has a decline...corporations like Nationwide don't help things. They just care about open bowling and birthday parties. Yeah I definitely know I won't get a sport shot laid out at this point. I had the hope that at one time they would but no longer. I keep hoping Brunswick might get into this area. I've been hearing rumors that the proprietor of Plaza Lanes is looking to sell. I would like to see Brunswick buy it out because I would go there as opposed to Hanover if that was the case.

David,

Rockaway has put out the PBA Shot several times, especially when they're going to host a regional. No center that I knew of put out a Sport Shot. I think there were just not enough bowlers willing to sacrifice their ego for that tough a shot.

Howell lanes now hosts that Sport shot league which ran in Strathmore lanes in Matwan. However, it is also now a PBA Shot league; I was in it this past Summer. Howell alos hosts PBA regionals from time to time; they also put out the PBA shot for practice just before the tournament.

I think these, Howell and Rockaway, are the only two houses that I know of, which put out a PBA Shot. There may be one just outside of CHerry Hill.

My Dad lives down in Howell. It might be worth checking out Howell Lanes in that case. That Sport/PBA shot league they run, is it a Summer league or a Fall/Winter league?

hey guys...good to hear from all of you.  to my surprise, linden lanes, where we had extremely dry lanes that day, has actually been really good with the lanes so far this year on sunday mornings.  so far in fact, that im playing closer to the gutter than i can ever remember, throwing my razor wire from 10 out to 5.  ive had roystriker come down twice so far to sub, and im sure he'll tell you the same, although he used a much more aggressive ball from a deeper line than me.  ive only been to 2 other nationwide centers(hudson and eagle rock), but linden definitely takes care of our league when it comes to oil...and so far, it has been very consistent.  i would say about a 38 foot pattern, extremely heavy from 13-13, decent amount from 13-7, and very little outside of about 5, just that the "non AMF synthetics" dont act like a ricochet when you hit it...by the 3rd game, carrydown(thanks to me ) starts making it inconsistent to play).

BTW, jeff, do you happen to know if they are going to be running the PBA League at howell again this year?...if my money situation works out by then, i may be able to do it.

As far as I know, yes, but it's too early to tell for sure. Since participation was so high last Summer, I can't imagine it not happening again.

I'm driving down to Carolier this Friday afternoon.  Meeting a co-worker who recently moved to Jersey to throw a few and talk B.S.

charlest,

What's up?  I noticed you didn't mention Carolier.  What kind of shot do they usually have?  Is that considered too far south than the other lanes you guys mentioned?

What up DavidSNK and Hotwire?  Hope all is well with you guys.

Later,

FBM357
