Sport shot league revisited (North Jersey guys respond)
« on: November 27, 2004, 09:07:40 AM »
Hey,

All right I want to take a little poll here.

Realistically how many people here have an interest in making a commitment to a sport shot league?

If you would be willing to make a commitment, lets just say for the sake of argument a 36 week league, do you know others who would be willing to make that commitment to join?

Would like responses on this because I am looking to see how turnout would be for a PBA/Sport shot league.

David,

I'm not sure I could tolerate shooting that low for 36 weeks. Hell, I can barely tolerate shooting well for 36 weeks in a row. (too long a committment these days) Two 15/16 week sessions might be tolerable. Of course it also depends how close it is and whatthe weekly charge is.

BTW will they/do you intend to vary the pattern month to month or week to week?

Where in NJ are we talking about, and what kind of league?  Would it be the same sport shot every week, or would it change from week to week?

I wouldnt mind a 20 week season,
3 weeks each(in a row) of A, B,C,D, and E
2 of the Us Open flat pattern
Masters
TOC
World Championships

But thats just me...depending on the day, time and location, I would be very interested.

jeff,

i dont care if im in the minority of bowlers, but i want to test myself and am willing to struggle if thats what i deserve.  i want to see if my game is where i think it is, and since my shoulder surgery a few years ago, i think ive gotten it to another level.  it may not be ready to average 200+ on all pba patterns, but for the experience, the fun, and the competition, its worth it.  why do you think ive been bugging you about howell so much?

Even I would have to admit it sounds like fun  Heck, I haven't any hair to pull on, so I might as well take some TUMS and try..  What's the worse that can happen?  not going to challenge my sanity as it was gone years ago...LOL

Erik,

I was right with you (I love to shoot on the PBA patterns; it lets me practice all my other release ... intentionally) until you mentioned the 41 foot flat oil US Open pattern.

While that is great for practice, it is terrible for actual bowling. I watched the pros and the amateurs for 3 full days on that torture test. That is not bowling; not in 1950, not in 1980, not now. I can't tell you the number of people I knew who would not bowl in that tournament because of that oil pattern. And these are skilled craftsman, not house 230 average bowlers. These are people who have won enough money not to have to have a job but they still do.

AND after watching all the sufering that week, I can only agree 110%. I had a chance to practice on it at Howell Lanes and I refused. I'm glad I did.

Erik,
You are good and getting better all the time. You're probably the best of our little "practice and get-together" group, except for NextlevelPS, Lonce. Bowling on the PBA patterns will be good for you & us and fun. Bowl on a flat oil pattern for practice ONLY.

What's the worse that can happen?

Oh, Vernon, Please come down to Howell Lanes on Monday this Summer and learn for yourself. It's an hour and 10 minutes one way for me and I will come unless something personal prevents me. There were 45 men and women last year; I came with the low outside book average and finished 11th. Would have finsihed 8th but my brain forgot how to make spares the last 3 of 15 weeks. Still kicking myself over that. People came from as far as Bergen County, NJ and PA.

ANd that was on old wood lanes; they put in synthetics this year; so I expect the averages to be even lower. The high finishing avg was about 195, including many 230 avg bowlers.

jeff,

first, thanks for the compliment about our group.  greatly appreciated.

while i have yet to bowl on any of the pba shots, that us open pattern is something i can relate to.  i had the manager over at jersey lanes put something very similar down for me before a big junior tourney last year(40 feet, may have been slightly different volume and buff area, but very close) and managed to average around 180 for 7 games.  considering i only had 1 ball(power charge) that fit my hand that week due to swelling, i was very satisfied with my performance.  since then, ive been wanting to bowl on that pattern again, along with the pba patterns and maybe even the other major patterns.  that TOC 50 footer looks like something very interesting, and just seeing it for a 4 game league nite would be well worth the experience.  personally, i tend to be at my best when everyone else is struggling, so i guess this has something to do with my wish to voluntarily pursue torture.  ive become so sick of the house shots all around, so i guess the concept of a league like the one at howell gets my competitive spririt flowing to try and be at my best.  ever since i changed my target at release from the first set of dots to the arrows (i did this about 2 months ago), i have become much more accurate with both speed and target.  that too is making me anxious to see where it has gotten me.  although, maybe this year we can just stick with A,B,C,D, and E.

charlest,

Where exactly is Howell?  Sounds like a real 'trip' for me (i.e. pack food and beverages, etc.)  I'd be willing to 'view' the horrors you mentioned
