Scratch Bowling in the Nation's Capital Area
« on: March 06, 2005, 10:24:17 PM »

I decided to start this post from the discussion that has built up from the Scratch Doubles Tournament topic.

Anyone from this area or surrounding area wishing to post, please feel free as this is valuable information for everyone.

In some recent talk regarding Scratch Bowling in our area, it has been discussed and my views have been posted.  I see a major decline in not just scratch bowling itself, but the fact that tournaments are not able to get the bowlers committed to bowling in their tournaments.  Also, you don't see your 190-205 avg. bowlers competing anymore because of the multitude of talent surrounding our area.

As a definite scratch bowler, I wanted to hear some input from those of you regarding my thoughts and want to hear what you think about the Scratch Bowling Realm that sits in the Nation's Capital.

The more posts the better.  Everyone's input is worth something, even if you feel like bashing the area, myself, or tournaments....feel free, it's freedom of speech, might as well utilize it!

Thanks in advance for your posts.

Hey I bowl over at Burke and occasionally at the once a month tourney at Shirley.  I average 199 in two leagues and essentially run the brackets in both my leagues now.  I consider myself a pot bowler but with limited success.  I have a harder time getting the ball down the lane but have plenty of hand.  It's tough at my average to play for money both scratch and handicap.  In scratch too many 225-235 avg bowlers will just clean my clock.  I had success in Vegas for the High Roller event but the format suits me better(head-to-head).  Not sure how you could get more bowlers in my category to bowl for money (hell I'll do it just for the action alone) but if you're bowling a 3 game block and cut to the top 1/3 it would eliminate all but around 10% of these bowlers.  Would love to have a tourney in the area that I thought would offer my a challenge yet still give me distant thoughts of winning.

Living in this area I think there are too many people that can talk up a good game but are embarassed to lost money, scores, or respect by bowling competitively outside of a house that they are able to score in week in and week out.  Too many times when I'm home I hear "(Insert Bowler here) can't beat me at (Insert Center here)....I'm unbeatable at (Insert Center here)....There's never a fair shot at (Insert Center here)....Lefties have the world at (Insert Center here)".  It's pretty ridiculous.  VMSBT is an excellent tournament club that is gaining a really good reputation.  Maybe with the increase of entries and money in the tournament it'll give people more of a competitive drive to compete in a such enviornment.  I'm one to admit, I have no major credintials, loads of honor scores, or titles anywhere but I'm a comfortable 190-195 player on most conditions and most houses, and as long as I have the money to play, I don't mind competing with the true scratch players.  I figure I might as well take the bumps and get the experience now before i take my game to the next level.

Thanks for the input thus far everyone.....

DP3,

As for the VMSBT, I wish nothing but the best of luck to Tony and company, but I just saw the recent stats for the qualifying and the cut was +113 and the leader was +301.

This is a prime example of what I'm talking about.  It's stuff like this that drives people away from scratch bowling in the area.  I appreciate everyone for continuing to post on this topic.

Please keep the comments coming....you're input is valuable and I hope that I can get more posts like these...for importance of the Scratch Bowling in the future....and I say this for a reason and with a purpose...please keep posting your thoughts.

Hey Steve!

Did you have anything in mind?  Are you collecting ideas because you are planning to run some tournaments?  Tony and I have lots of ideas if you are looking for input and/or help and support.

Maybe we could do something collectively in the Summer.  Like a Scratch Tour.  Or a short league based on a ranked draft.  Would most people be willing to travel a bit to compete?

Steve,  the last VMSBT low to cash was a little high, but not unresonable.  The one before that the low to cash was about -68 if I remember correctly.  Tony really tries to get the houses to put out something other than the house shot, and in general he does.  Until somebody can come up with something better, Tony still has the best scratch tournaments ion the area.  But as you metioned, there is a lot of very good bowlers in the DC area.  I will continue to enter his tournaments even though (as much as I hate to admit it), my age (54) does put me at somewhat of a disadvantage.  Its tough to compete with guys 25-30 years younger, but I'll still be there.

Christina, for the most part, anything in the the DC area is doable for me.  I'd prefer not to have to travel from Waldorf to say Gaithersburg, but I could.

I will agree with you that Walton's tournament is the best going....right now.  As for the possibilities of running something...let's just say, something nice may be on the way.

Thanks again everyone for your input....chappygirl, I be in touch.

Take care,

Steve

The next tournament is this Sunday (3/13) at AMF Country Club in Baltimore.  The start time is 12:00 noon, 6 games across 12 lanes, entry is $85, new VMSBT members have to join for $10.  All of the rules, etc are on the VMSBT web page www.vmsbt.com

I was thinking about a short summer league/tour, half in Maryland, half in Virginia... Scratch... possibly drafted trios.

Since you started this, what are you looking for in a tournament.  Please say you are looking for something which would include something which would be inclusive for both Virginia and Maryland bowlers.  As you know, the WW bridge is the dividing point on bowlers attitude toward the sport and lane conditioning.
Peace

Is it really the bridge, or could it be the difference between AMF houses and Bowl America houes.  Because, as all of us in the area know, there is a difference between the two.

Why do you have to join an organization just to bowl in a tournament?  Unless 100% of the entry fee is returned to the bowlers.  That extra join up fee keeps me from bowling.  Its not the 10 bucks, its the principle.  Isn't taking a portion of the entry fee enough money for each tournament?
