Strike & Spare - NJ
« on: June 27, 2008, 06:29:45 AM »
For those of you that have the misfortune of bowling at SnS I just wanted to let you know that there may be hope in the future.  They have started replacing the very worn out wood lanes and installing synthetics.  They should be complete with the high side by tonight.  Dave from the pro shop got to test out the shot yesterday and he threw up 5, tried 10 to 5, 15 to 10 and then moved as deep as possible and swung the lane and each time he struck.  He told the desk that if they kept out that shot they would have "100s of 300s in a year".  We'll see about that but hopefully the manager realizes that once these new lanes are in that he HAS to oil everyday, unlike what he does now.  Went up there the other night to practice and normally all you need is your plastic ball because they are too dry for anything else.  I bowled 1 game and packed it up.  No matter where I stood or how hard I threw and lofted, I could not keep my plastic ball from going into the left gutter (well, maybe caught the 4 pin occasionally).  Gee, no wonder my form and timing are so screwed up! C'mon synthetics.

where is this in NJ??? never heard of it.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to thinking that if they buy a new ball they will carry everything. And its even funnier when im carrying with my 15 year old ball and they're going flat ten.

Oil on wood lanes tend to dry out faster than the synthetics. Oil on synthetics will carry down more than wood.

You have no idea how BAD these lanes are and have been for a LONG, LONG time!
They were supposed to install synthetics in 2000!
In 1997/8, you could through the holes (3" - 4" diameter!) in the maple, just beyond the foul line into the structure below.
You could 1/2" spacing between boards, at about 35 - 40' feet down, if you walked down the walkway at the edge of lanes 1, 24, 25, 48. Th eoil was pushed down to that point actually dripped down between the boards.

If you had less than 15-16 mph ball speed, you had to loft the ball approx 35 - 40 feet to get length or have zero revs.

None if the above are exaggerations for effect.

I will no longer bowl there until they prove they can take care of any new lanes installed. The guy Dave, JS references above, is a great bowling, high speed lefty. With his ball speed and revs, he can strike anywhere on almost anything.

and this place is or was AMF's highest grossing bowling establishment on the East Coast!

If I remember correct Strike n Spare is an AMF center, so dont be surprised if the super easy shot is out all the time. Its also amazing to see a center updating instead of folding, which seems to be happening to every center nowadays.

not in this hell hole. No way.

I attest to what Jeff T and John say the lanes were truly warped.

It almost makes me want to come back down and see how the rest of the fellows are doing, especially if Dave is testing the conditions.

Sounds good for the future though I miss the Bi-County league.

I used to work at Mid-State before they went under, and I was told about SnS. After I heard the horror stories I vowed to never go there. Ever. I worked there about 2.5 years ago, and there were rumors of them replacing their lanes too.  Glad to see it only took a few years

Would that they had saved Midstate and burned SnS down to the ground. I would have supplied all matches and all inflammables!

I totally agree Jeff.  Mid-State was at the very least a very consistent house.  The interior wasn't exactly the greatest, but the lanes were always the same and I loved that about it.

Mid-State was one of my favorites.  Was sorry to see it go.

So, was excited to try out the new synthetics today so after dinner my wife and I went up to practice.  Just brought my Sure Strike and plastic with me (usually just have plastic but knew there would be oil, right).  Finally, got up and threw my first ball, left gutter at the arrows.  All the excitement vanished.  Wound up bowling 5 games with my plastic ball lining up for a 10 pin as my strike target.  Oh well, at least the a/c was working well today.

If this no oil trend continues, the new synthetics will be burned up before the fall leagues even start.

At 8:30pm, we were the only ones at the lanes bowling and they closed at 8:45 when our games were done.  What a shame what they did to this house.

John,

You're forever the optimist, especially when it comes to SnS, and always the glutton for punishment.

I bet you were thinking you might be able to bowl there this fall/winter season. I'm suggesting again, please wait until they PROVE they can take care of the lanes. Try Stelton Lanes in Piscataway or Plaza Lanes in Madison or anywhere else but SnS.

I don't know if Stelton lanes changed the shot, but last time I bowled in a league there the condition was a major wet dry wall.

Well John at least if you practice there you can always try those high load particles up the dry like at Woodbridge.

Woodbridge is insane.  I bowled the Middlesex Masters there, and it was drier than a bone outside 8 or 9 or whatever.  Then inside was drenched.  Talk about taking oil ratios to the extreme.  I had so much room before the oil began to carry down.

Majestic is kinda like adult bumper bowling as well.  I have not bowled at SNS since the JBT days.
