Strike & Spare - NJ
« on: June 27, 2008, 06:29:45 AM »
For those of you that have the misfortune of bowling at SnS I just wanted to let you know that there may be hope in the future.  They have started replacing the very worn out wood lanes and installing synthetics.  They should be complete with the high side by tonight.  Dave from the pro shop got to test out the shot yesterday and he threw up 5, tried 10 to 5, 15 to 10 and then moved as deep as possible and swung the lane and each time he struck.  He told the desk that if they kept out that shot they would have "100s of 300s in a year".  We'll see about that but hopefully the manager realizes that once these new lanes are in that he HAS to oil everyday, unlike what he does now.  Went up there the other night to practice and normally all you need is your plastic ball because they are too dry for anything else.  I bowled 1 game and packed it up.  No matter where I stood or how hard I threw and lofted, I could not keep my plastic ball from going into the left gutter (well, maybe caught the 4 pin occasionally).  Gee, no wonder my form and timing are so screwed up! C'mon synthetics.

Yes Jeff, forever the optimist.  You know me .

I WAS thinking about fall leagues (how did you know - ha!).  What is wrong with the management there!!!!  But you're right.  I need to wait and see if anything is going to change.  I guess I just WANT it to work out that I keep forgetting about the past couple of years bowling there.

Anthony....no matter how hard I try, I'll never be able to fluff it up the dry at that house

I don't know if Stelton lanes changed the shot, but last time I bowled in a league there the condition was a major wet dry wall.

Well John at least if you practice there you can always try those high load particles up the dry like at Woodbridge.

Anthony,

I was only kidding John about bowling at Stelton. (I did add a smiley face.)
BUT Noodles told me the driller there, Rob, is for a real. Sometime this summer, I'll probably have him drill a ball and see what happens.

I might have to go see Rob too then.  Keep me posted if you do Jeff.

I tried calling the pro shop and after many rings it just answered and said "sorry we missed you, please leave a message".  No mention of their hours, etc.  I then called the front desk and some "lovely" person named Diane answered.  I asked her if she knew the hours of the pro shop and all she said was "No".  Ahhhhh, customer service at it's best.

Not a good sign to start with.
(John, I assume you're talking about Stelton.)

That house was crap to put it nicely. It mades me appreciate my ex home house of oakwood lanes.  i just moved near garfield and they reopened the place on 46.  Its actually not that bad. Anyone bowling in the clifton area?  Once my ankle heals I need to find a league and maybe some people to bowl with.

Plenty of leagues in the Clifton area. PM me what nights you would like to bowl and I'll steer you in the right direction.

I'm up in the Clifton area as well, bowl around Parkway Lanes, Lodi, Wallington, The Drome, looking to expand to various other Bergen County houses.

I'm looking for a little Thursday night action myself, wouldn't mind lining something up for the upcoming winter leagues.

On a side note I kind of liked Oakwood, their Sunday morning beat the house events were fun.

We weren't so interested in bowling there, as in using the services of the pro shop which was recommended.

FYI I "tried to" bowl there in the middle 80s in a company league. Cess pool doesn't begin to describe that place back then. The entire league voted to move to another house, immediately, in night #1. Now, it's a freaking palace, comparatively speaking.

John,

I know you said they (SnS) installed the synthetics, but last report they're still not oiling them regularly. I can't even bring myself to think of going there and it's still one of the closest places to me besides Manville's Tenpin lanes. My brain just skips over them in my mental database of places at which I can practice.

Let me/us know if you go there to practice and if they are oiling on any sort of schedule. I can't believe they have brand new synthetics and are still not oiling them, caring for them properly. Small wonder AMF is in such trouble for so long. Amazed they're still in business.

Jeff,

I will try to find out if they have a schedule (I doubt it) and will let you know.

My son and I were there practicing the other day and Tucky (Asst Mgr) was practicing 2 pairs to our right.  He said the lanes were so nice now that people were going to be shooting "telephone numbers". I looked over and he had the first 8.  Hmmmm, I started to think "finally"!  So we shoe up and throw and the ball doesn't even clear the arrows.  What the .....!  Our stuff is struggling to clear the heads.  So after a game of hitting the 2-4-7 side we were getting just a little frustrated. He (Tucky) went back up to the desk so my son and I went over to his pair to see if there was any difference.  BIG difference.  We had lots of hold and good backs.  We just struck the whole time we were on that pair.  Now I know what he was talking about.  So, the potential is there but I don't know if the pair we had was because of use or because the oiling machine was not working properly (they were getting set up for a corporate party so no other lanes were available to try out).

The SnS saga continues.  The potential now seems to be there but will they care enough to do anything.  I was at the pro shop last night and they made an announcement to the doubles league bowling there that next week some corporation rented the entire house and the league would not be bowling.

If I find out when they have oil I'll let you know and see if I can drag you back for a practice session.

See, John, that's EXACTLY what I mean about that place.
How in heaven's name can they give the assistant manager an oiled pair and give you, a very regular attendee, a PBA member, a high scoring bowler a pair that has been NOT oiled. Even worse, how could they NOT oil every lane in the house?? These are brand new they need protection. Sigh ....

I wouldn't mind trying an oiled pair, but, sorry to sound like a broken record, until they show me I can trust them to take care of the place, and thus, take care of bowlers, I won't be a league bowler there. Heck, I won't be any bowler there.
