Best Pro shop in DC area
« on: August 20, 2006, 04:18:08 AM »
I recently moved to the Nova/Dc/southern Maryland Area (I live on the NW DC Maryland border) and I am need of some new equipment and possible a new house.  I visted a couple of the lanes and liked the AMF Shady Grove.  However, their proshops seems to lack a bit compared to what i am used to.  Is there any great pro shop in the DC area that bowlers in the area use?  I'm willing to travel a ways in order to recieve good service.  Thanks in advance.

I go to Carmen Don's in Alexandria but distance is a factor in this area if you haven't found out the hard way already.  Maybe someone in the MD suburbs would be able to find something for you.

There are less than a handful of pro shops in the Md suburbs south of Baltimore. You should try Tubar Thompson at AMF Laurel, Mike Warboy at Crofton or Wayne Stepp in Glen Burnie depending on where you are and how far you want to travel.

  • I hope you can drill up a ball better than Joe Claypool... Ugh.

Wife: "Heh, that's more than you've done for me lately."
Me: "Yeah, well my balls don't BLEED for a week out of every month."

I'm not sexist. I just don't trust anything that bleeds for 5 days and doesn't die.

Welcome to the area. I have been going to Bowlers World Old Branch Ave in Clinton MD. Gary Parson (Guru) is the proshop owner. His stock is always full and good ball drillers too. If you ever in the are head out to AMF Marlow in Md.

When I lived in the area, I liked going to Mike Warboy at Crofton, he is a good guy.  Also check out Spare Time Sports in Waldorf, MD if you are willing to travel, it is worth the trip -- just call ahead to make an appointment as they are usually very busy -- (301) 932-4998.

First thing I look at in a pro shop is how much training and experience do they have AND what they do to continue that training.  That includes industry knowledge, training seminars, and other certifications needed to keep ahead of the learning curve.

The 2 best pro shops in the DC/NOVA are are Sports Plus Carmen Don in Alexandria, VA and Red Nelson's Bowlers World in Clinton, MD.    I believe both have been in the business before well over 20 years.

SPCD have extremely knowledagely drillers like Jim Lewis and Mike Sinek.  Both are long time competitive bowlers outside of league conditions (Jim is a multi PBA regional champion and Sinek is former U of MD coach and Team USA National finalist).

RNBW is an IBPSIA certified shop with Gary "Guru" Parsons being one of the key board members of IBPSIA.  Gary knows EVERYONE in the industry and is extremly knowledgable.

There's more to being a ball driller than punching holes. The above drillers have the knowledge and experience to do more than just use the drill sheet included with the ball.

I can't disagree with Mr. Chapman in his assessment.  However I am partial to Tubar Thompson at AMF Laurel (301) 317-3678.  He is a personal friend.  But putting that aside, he is an IBPSIA certified technician, he is a Silver Level certified coach, and he has Bowler's Map video software and equipment available.  Several scratch and PBA Regional tournament players utilize his services.

There are some pro shops with more years of experience, but you will not be disappointed if you decide to give Tubar a try.
