THS TOURNAMENTS
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:38:05 AM »
What is the point of running a tournament when a THS is put out. These tournaments should be renamed to League Tournaments that way everyone will know the shot is going to be stupid easy. This takes the fun out of bowling a bit when all you see is constant strikes. Spares are part of the game too you know. Who is to blame for this? Does this make everyone feel like they are a good bowler at the end of the day or does the only thing that matters at the end of the day is that the house made money and who cares, we saved money by only oiling once. This comment is to all who hold THS tournaments.

I dont know much when it comes to the business end of the bowling industry but IMO you have to keep every bowler happy, get them to come back, and turn a profit.

not easy seeing as bowling on the competitive side of things is not the most popular thing. make things too hard and im sure the majority are going whine.

sure im not a fan of the ths strike fest where shooting almost 700 doesnt get you qualify you for the cash spots but its better then hearing people whine and havin people not come back.

*just be glad you have THS by you. im the opposite. constantly bowl league on a hard lane surface that dries up and have an OOB/"inside shot" (inside of 10 is usually the breakpoint unless you have more then 300 revs)*

1. Easy ths= more entries and more in the pay outs.
2. Easy ths tourneys mean less oil so save money in that aspect.

As much as I despise them, they're where your money is outside of PBA. Most sport tourneys don't bring in big bucks and it costs to put down the conditions. My advice would be to travel. See what else is out there.

This has been discussed many times on here.  As sad as it is, the truth is in order to draw entries in local stuff you have to make them easy so the house guys will bowl.  Id much rather have them tough, however id rather bowl with 70-90 guys than 20-30, sad but true.

With the lane oil these days they dry right up after 3 games anyways, so at least the cut won't be +230 or so, it will be more like +80/+100 after 5 or 6 games. The lane burner's will still have a chance to watch there ball grap the lane and catch up.

You say if the lanes are difficult people will not bowl. Don't let people know what pattern is being put out. Why don't someone run some tournament's with different lane pattern's, some easy and some more difficult but make sure that everyone hit's a difficult or a easy pair. Make these houses earn there lineage fee. Everyone's happy and that way no one can complain or make up excuses of why they won't bowl. If there is enough prize money to bowl for that should bring in people no matter what. How about calling them hybrid tournament's, combining THS & OOB pattern's.

It doesn't really matter if they know or not. If the house has a reputation for being easy and you start laying down difficult shots people will get turned off and eventually stop coming.
Trust me my dude, I feel your pain but unless there's a huge payout, good luck getting people to rack there brains for house league money.

Tony Walton does that every year.  Jim Smith went from having 100+ entries at his quick and cheap to 30, because he started putting down tougher and PBA patterns.  He didn't say what was going to be out at first, but all it takes is 1 time for the 220+ league bowler to average 180 and you will never see them again.  Like someone said earlier, the best bowlers usually find a way to win anyway, whether its averaging 210 or 250.

As far as nobody complaining, THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!  Ask anyone on here lol

I will be running a scratch doubles tournament in just a few hours.
It will be on the house shot.
My reasons for running it on the house shot are simple.
It's a 6 lane center will be switching pairs.
Entry fee is low so i'll draw some of the in house bowlers and keep most of the big guns away.
The few big guns that will bowl it are good friends of mine and are doing me a favor.
Trying to drum up bar business for the owner who is a good friend of mine.
The scoring pace will be moderately low because of the transistions this house goes thru.
I'm estimating the cut to the top 8 teams to be +80 which isn't outrageous.
High team will be around +180.

So I was a little off in my estimates for yesterday.

Full field.
Cut to top 8 the number was plus 101.
High was plus 186.

There were plenty of teams between plus 70 and the cut.

This was done on a house shot.

Now before you bash the talent level.
There were at least 3 eagle winner's in the field.

Why would anyone want to do that?  No offense but driving 3-8 hours spending $250 and cashing for $400 is not a good investment at all.  This topic has been discussed over and over.  More and more people are actually realizing how bad the PBA investment is.  Alot of people have realized that in the last couple years.  As someone that gets in side action how could you ever encourage someone to bowl regionals?  Just curous thats all.  Its your money so its your choice, to me its a more logical decision to bowl local stuff and make money in the side action.
