quote: We had a great turnout with 81 Bowlers representing Baltimore, Washington, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware & New Jersey. The Lane Pattern for Saturday was the same pattern used at the 2007 USBC Open Championships in Reno. This pattern was very speed and roll sensitive. As you view the results you will see there were various types of styles of bowling that achieved success on this pattern and made Match Play. We had the lefties, the no thumbs, the 1st & 2nd boarders, straighties and a Senior that brought only 2 balls to the tournament that kicked butt in Round 1( A Former Triple Threat Champion). The day started out as usual with only 15 prepaid entries and 66 walk-ins.... Please everyone, prepaying makes it a lot easier to start a tournament " On Time". Of course, our Triple Threat Walk-ins are usually folks that have given their commitment to bowl but have just not paid in full. And believe me, " Our Triple Threat Bowlers" are true to their word, because each one of our tournaments we are "Blessed" with our Based On Entries or Greater. The 1st game started out with many trying to figure out whether to play in or out on the pattern and deal with the synthetic approaches. While those who chose incorrectly started out with games under 180 ( 40% of the field), there were some highlights as Taz Stringer's 258 game tied the High Game Pot with Brian Poole. The 2nd and 3rd Game saw folks pretty much still figuring out the shot or their best route to The pocket and to Carry all 10 pins as some of the sub 200 scores were flip flopped amongst the bowlers. Charlie Bruno, a lefty, from South Jersey seemed to have a "Great Look" as he managed to shoot 728 for the first three games with a 275 in Game 2 to lead the tournament after 3 games. Our 2006 Men's Classic Champion Warren Wiggins and Our 2006 Open Classic Runner Up Lee Brosius ( Both Senior Participants) were on Charlie's heels with 683 and 688, respectively. Joe Washington from Delaware shot a Game Pot winner in Game 3, a score of 267 to move into the Top 4 with +69 after 3 games. Game 4 saw Chhoeun To score a Pot winner 277 Game to also win the Hi Game of the Day & Survival Board 1 and boost his Place to 5th in Round 1 standings by scoring 733 for the back 3 games , only to trail Joe Tremper who recovered from a 155 in Game 2 and rallied for 752 for the final 3 games of round 1 to move into 4th Place. Game 5 in a Triple Threat Tournament is always a very important one. Game 5 ends Survival Board 2, is the Super Jackpot Game and is the final Game of Qualifying. While everyone started to Dig Really Deep trying to win the Big Cash in Game 5 and make that final run to the top 14 Cut, Brian Eardley was successful in finishing with a 236 in Game 5 to overtake Derek Payne & Jarvis Greene ( 1st time Participant - Welcome) for the final Qualifying position. Lee Brosius shot a 245 game to take the lead by 2 pins from Charlie Bruno who led the tournament games 2-4, to become the High Qualifier and receive the $100 Bonus, however, Joe Trempers 256 made him the Game 5 Big Money winner with a win in Survival Board 2, Super Jackpot & Hi Game 5 for a total of $715.00.Match Play was a new element to the Triple Threat Tournament . Each Qualifier bowled 3 games of Random Match Play with the final game a Position Round. One Spectator of the Match play commented " Cut Charlie Bruno's 1st Place Check" as Charlie bowled a 290 against Brian Poole in a battle of the lefties in game 2 of match play. Brian Eardley " Begged to Differ " as he shot games of 257, 231, 278 and gain 90 points of Bonus pins to move from 14th to 2nd trailing by 25 pins for the Final Position Round Match. Brian Cavey and Ira Darden Jr. immediately started their Match on the last pair of lanes, knowing that neither had won a game in match play nor shot a 200 game. Cavey switched balls and dug in deep to shoot a 288 game to win the match play pot and Jump 4 places to win 9th Place. While Brian Cavey was finally finding a Deuce... Brian Eardley was finding more "Hunger" as he shot 256 to Charlie Bruno's 236 to get the 30 bonus pins and the 1st Place $1,400.
