Elkton Scratch 9 gamer March 7th at 5:30pm
« on: March 04, 2009, 07:44:04 AM »
Elkton is running the 9 gamer again at 5:30 march 7th.  Falls Church 6 gamer is same day but at 1:00pm.  There is time to bowl both tournaments.

The idea sounds good I should say, but how in the world will there be enough time?

We've made the run from falls church to Elkton before with time to spare.  Elkton puts out tough shots, although as of late were kinda hoping they make a "tweek" the left side a little to make it a little more fair as there haven't been enough lefties competing to break down the left side.

Dave,
Does it really matter what's down if you want to bowl? What happened to people showing up, reading the lanes and adjusting? Both places lay down a "challenging shot" ... straighter is greater in both instances.

Unfortunately we didn't get the nationals pattern...  Ended up being the Elkton house shot, so the tournament ended up being a bit of waste, except for Joe Tremper who won again there for the 4th time.  Not sure why the mistake was made.  They are going to run one more tournament at Elkton and may move to a new tournament venue if they can't get the center to work with the tournament director in getting the right patterns out.  +375 won, with +237 being the cut for 9 games.

Will is in a tough position because he's running tournaments in the Delaware area with no support from the locals. The Baltimore and Northern Virginia bowlers are the majority of the entries. It's really sad to think that he & the others that help run the tournaments are trying to give the people in DE something to bowl but they never support the cause...

Isn't that the case everywhere?  I mean most tournaments have the same 30-40 guys bowling in them now.  It is sad to see tournaments that are in a local area, no matter where, have no local support.  Its sad!

Will mentioned moving the tournament to the same center that's hosting the Rodman.  I'm not sure that's a great idea as the maryland / virginia bowlers aren't going to drive another 30 minutes further away to bowl.  Will said he's going to one one more shot at Elkton and see what happens.  Hopefully will get a better turnout this time and hopefully will get some cooperation from the center with the pattern.  He doesn't have too many options on centers to move to as most arent going to give up the lanes on a Saturday for 5:30 pm tournament.

What it boils down to is how many people really want to bowl tournaments? Like the gentleman above said, we usually get the same people at each event. What needs to take place is either advertise more (which I don't know what else Will can do!!) or get word of mouth and see really who wants to bowl. The Money Bags tour gets a great turn out so maybe there is something there we can learn from. I for one love Will's passion and consistency, it is just tough knowing that his attendance is dwindling. He runs great tournaments and with the right center I think can attract a lot of people. Bowlers just have to decide if they are going to bowl or continue to run their mouth.

CTK, you nailed it on the nose, people are best at running their mouths. I cannot tell you how many times I have had someone tell me they are going to start bowling tournaments.

And to the 30-40 guys/gals that bowl on the weekend, if you want to see a good turn out, then stop barking when the shot is soft. How many tournaments do you think those first time entries are going to frequent if the shot is tough? The Rhodman sells out year after year and everyone going knows they have to strike.

Exactly. It is what it is. If we happen to bowl on a wall then gear your game towards speed and revs and hope they fall. It makes no sense to enter and then complain. I marvel at all the people that are capable of shooting enormous scores in their league play but when it comes to tournament time, the complain that the shot is soft and unfair. If we happen to bowl on a wall and get 100+ entries then my idea would be to continue bowling on a wall. Let us (as bowlers) stop running off at the chops and just bowl. We all can't get what we want but we must continue to bowl. Be it my way we would bowl on nothing but 50ft patterns but being that the idea is unrealistic and would draw 4 people, I myself bowl on whatever.

Although to be fair, it is disheartening when a tournament is advertised as being on a difficult pattern and upon arrival you see a giant christmas tree LOL......

Tournament organizer cannot control the house's inability to put the right shot down.

To all, March 14, I expect to see you at AMF Laurel! The Boards & Balls Tour check-in opens at 4:30pm and the tournament starts at 5:30pm. If you have never bowled a 40 Boards event, we don't like starting late!
