Can anyone give me an idea how much you have been charged handling/customs etc on top of delivery costs for online purchases from the U.S? I have heard some varied amounts, but wondered what practical experiences people had had and how they got around the charges and the like.

steviet is right in that you will save money,buy the amount you pay will vary as the tax is calculated on the value of the item, so the dearer the item the more you pay.
