NS 2 Question
« on: October 14, 2005, 05:55:51 AM »
Has anyone thrown this ball?  How does it compare to the Yeah Baby! (as they both have the same cover)?  I'm interested in this ball, but had a terrible time with the Yeah Baby...  so just wondering how the two compare.
Thanks,
S^2

Haven't thrown it myself, yet.
As far as I have learned, it is not a Yeah Baby! (Not sure, but don't think their covers are the same.)
It is even more of a control ball than the original but it handles even more oil. People's problems so far, as you might expect, are using it on far too little oil; then they whine that it doesn't hook at all, when it used up all its energy in the first 12 feet.

It's an early rolling ball (heavy load of diamond particles) that retains energy WHEN used with enough oil in the heads AND the midlane. It got the highest rating on BTM's sport condition EVER. it is A CONTROL BALL. If you're expecting a load of backend, try a different ball. Unless you're on medium-heavy oil, try another ball. If you're first inclination is to drill it stacked leverage, try another ball.

FYI Strapper,

Even though the Yeah Baby! is NOT a control ball, unless you used it with heavy head oil and pretty heavy midlane oil, and unless you gave it plenty of room to hook, it more than likely hit weakly and left 10 pins all day long, IF you got to the pocket.

I can't find enough oil for my Yeah Baby!, so I doubt I'd find enough for the NS2. I suspect you or I would be better off with the Kong or the Big Kahuna, if you want a particle ball. They go longer and have fairly large hooks in the backend. If you want some degree of snap on medium oil, try a Masterpiece; kind of a surprising ball reaction.

Thanks for the info.  I'm defintely looking for something smooth.. and the high BTM sport ratings got me a little excited.  So that's what sparked the interest in the ball again.  I'm starting to gather some equipment for tournaments with "challenging" shots, ultimately hoping to make it to Corpus Christi in Feb...

My concern with the ball is that the legends website says it has a similar cover to it as the yeah baby.  I bought the yeah baby when it first came out and all I remember is the ball skidding almost the entire lane... and not even attempting to get into a roll...  It didn't appear to be burning up, but I could have been wrong.  I had heard (prior to buying it) that it was a strong ball with lots of backend... but I could barely get the ball to wrinkle...  typically that isn't the case with any ball!  I tried several different surfaces at a couple different houses and pretty much got the same thing.

Strapper,

I originally got the YB just to compare it to my NS. So I drilled it indentically, took it out to a place with oil and played the same line as my NS. The NS reacted its normal way - great! loud CRACK at the pocket. I loved it; still love it. 1 game to warm up; then 1 game to line up and see what line to play and finished up.

Then played the same line with the YB. It went fine, a little longer, and then hooked properly, or so it seems. It was a nice clean shot in practice. I left 8, count 'em EIGHT!, solid and weak 10 pins on what seemed perfect shots over 11 allowable balls in that game. I was scratching my head, wanting to throw it in the river. Very frustrating. Very! a lot of money down the drain. (Yes, I am drawing this out.)

Then, it occurred to me that they said this was a stronger ball, more overall hook. So, just for fun and a little bit desperate, I moved a little deeper, about 3 boards, with the same breakpoint. Hmm, it was hitting better and coming off the breakpoint a little stronger. Still left a few 10 pins, but less. every few frames I moved a little deeper still.

Now, of course, some of this was the house shot, but these lanes are slippery than a greased eel Brunswick AnvilLanes. If you ain't got enough ball and enough hand that ball ain't coming back on these suckers.

I wound up moving 10 boards with my feet keeping the same breakpoint. The ball was in its freaking glory. TEN BOARDS DEEPER I had to play. I threw more messengers and kicked out more 4 pins than I dream about.

The ball had its stock cover and was drilled label leverage, true 3.5" from pin to PAP.

I have no idea why yours didn't hook.

I felt the same way after reading the BTM article.  BTM for the most part has never steered me wrong in their reviews of course nothing is perfect but it's better than what you read here for the most part.

I think charlest is correct............I really doubt many of us see enough long/heavy oil sport conditions to use this ball much.  I believe one might be better off with a lighter condition control drill ball for most sport conditions.  JMO.

BTW---I have seen this now with a number of Legends/LM users that are using Kong or YB or one of the medium/heavy particle balls and they all say this ball skids to much and doesn't get into a roll.

Guys it's burned out not enough head oil mid lane maybe used up with some carry down....ain't gonna work.  I learned this long ago with a Visionary Midnight Scorcher which at the time was a heavy particle type ball.  NO head oil put it away...also these balls are not made for covering 20 boards...IMO made to be used straighter cover fewer boards to retain energy.

Oh BTW I doubt you'd used this ball at Natl's.  Natl's from what I see the majority of time played deep with ball with better recovery from deep inside. Lane condition is always lighter volume with decent lengths and very clean backends.

Great read guys...I am also curious about this ball's sport condition rating in BTM. From what charlest said, it's received he highest scores ever for a sport shot test.

What would be a great control drill on this ball? It aleady is a particle ball "natural push" in the backend without too much of a pronounced "angularity," to it. Maybe a Pin on Axis? Or a 5 x 2?

I would not put a "control" drill on a ball that's designed to be a control ball from the word go. "Control" drills are meant to force a ball to become a control ball. That, I believe, would stiffle the reaction of the ball. I'd put a normal drill on it, one that would not make it roll early or one that would not cut down on it flare.

The ball is designed for medium to heavy/long medium oil, not for light and not for true heavy oil.
