Pyramid Curse - Initial thoughts
« on: October 05, 2016, 07:14:22 AM »
I went ahead and bought the Curse...

I've had enough time to spend with my new Curse and enough of a happy ending that I feel it's worth a review, particularly since this company is still fairly unknown. You guys know me, I do not like staffer reviews, and I can't remember when the last time was I actually wrote a review itself, so that should tell you this was at least a positive experience, for me to spend a little time on it. I should state in case there's a doubt that I don't know Pyramid and have no relationship with them, and am just a bowler who tried a new ball and liked most of it. It's not all sweetness and light though.

Speaking of recycled garbage, let's talk about the packaging. The box was clearly made out of 140% recycled content. That's fine EXCEPT when I tried to put my hand in the slot and carry the ball across the parking lot to the pro shop, the box ripped and I almost lost the ball in the parking lot. Box strength wasn't close to what I've seen. Did I mention that the box was junk? It also says Pyramid Path all the way around the box and only mentions the word Curse on the stick-on label. I found that to be a little odd as well... Isn't Path a different ball?

I have the ball drilled fairly strong with the pin above ring finger, CG swung out almost 45, and a thumb positive weight hole. I saw the reply to my earlier question that said logo filler came out. This ball is silk screened or whatever Motiv does, so no problem there. Being a lefty, where the big logos ride on my track, I liked that.

Now, for ball motion in the hands of a 225 rev rate senior on the slick left.. The answer is yes, and lots of it. This ball is somewhat early, but I am really impressed with the recovery and movement on the lanes. It's strong, came back from almost anywhere, with motion that looks like a strong curve rather than an angular motion. Maybe I just hit the optimal drill for this ball, who knows. It is really the first ball that I have had in 10 years with my low rev style that I could actually count on returning from anywhere. Sounds difficult to believe, and it may just be me, but it is out hooking my Scandal (3000 grit sanded on my spinner). Of course, having this much confidence in what I see, I'm sure that helps my release and adds to the revs/recovery. But I honestly can toss the ball anywhere and have it come back. I could get used to that.

Hitting power seems decent, including a few shots that threw the pins back faster than a 60-year-old man should ever be able to. I still remember one shot that had to be the best of my life, seriously. On the other hand, we all know that unusual feeling when a ball hits soft and the pins fall weird. I had a few of those also. I should adjust the cover stock to see if it takes care of the problem, but I like what I've got right now too much to touch it. I am pretty much death on wheels when it comes to adjusting the surface with my spinner, so that will have to come later.
Bottom line, right now I'm liking what I see and don't want to mess with it.

I like it enough that I'm going to try the Antidote or Force next instead of the Mission Unknown. I want the Force but the Antidote is very attractively priced right now. My wife does not understand the value of scientific research though, so it may be a few days...  ;)

Respectfully submitted.....
