I hate to be angry, and skeptical, but I am. I don't think having it televised on ABC will do anything for bowling, and I also feel that the only reason that it is being televised there is because Kelly Kulick won it last year, which turned in into a miniature media sideshow of sorts.
I see where you say that NOW it has been opened up to ANY PBA member who has EVER won a tournament. I also feel that this is a kneejerk reaction to all the criticism the PBA received for allowing Kelly into the tournament last year after winning the specialized, limited competition, "WOMENS" series.
I guess what I am feeling, and trying to say is, I wish bowling was interesting enough in its own right to have garnered an appearance on ABC television. Instead, I feel like ABC is trying to "cash in" on what, last year, turned into a media sideshow.
I could be totally wrong, and I actually hope that I am.
I just don't see why people who don't even watch the PBA, and don't even/won't even know what the significance of this tournament is, would suddenly flock to their tv's to watch this. Because its on ABC? You may get a few more casual viewers, but that's probably all. The faithful, like you and I, will already be there.
Love you, love your articles, and love bowling, I just feel like this is a "publicity stunt" by ABC more than anything else, and that would be sad.

I feel that given the current state of bowling in general, this move COULD be just what the PBA needs, and thats more exposure. Thats assuming they (ABC-TV) promote and market this show well in advance of the air date.

I truly hope you're the one who's right. ABC used to broadcast all (or nearly all) PBA events in primetime on saturday afternoons, and it was pretty highly rated. HOPEFULLY this event will be profitable enough to show ABC that bowling IS worthy to be on broadcast network tv during prime hours.

While I too remember bowling on Saturday afternoons, I would hardly consider that "prime hours". With all the competition for time, baseball, soccor, football, basketball, etc. Saturday afternoons from 1:30 - 3:00 (or 3:30) is time most people spend outside or away from the televisions. I think, and hope, their will be a ratings increase, but I think that is almost a guarantee since ABC is broadcast into millions of more homes then ESPN.
That being said, I think this is a good thing for that exact reason. And I don't really think it matters why it is happening. I am happy to see the PBA captialize on Kelly's win last year. This is exactly what they should be doing. Using the media sensation generated by that to help expand the reach of the PBA into the TV viewing public.
Also, Kelly won the Women's World Championship to qualify for the TOC. That was open to all, not just the Women's Series qualifiers, just like the Men's World Championship was open to any PBA member. I think it was perfectly legitimate to give the winner of that tournament a spot in the TOC. And no one would have said a thing if Kelly had finished 71st, it was only because she made the show, that people started complaining. With the advent of the exempt tour, you had to adjust the rules of the TOC or eventually, you may have only had 30-40 people that qualified for it. And with the $1MM total purse this year, I again think it is fair to open it up like they are. Why should someone be excluded from a chance to win one, if not the largest 1st prize in professional bowling ever, just because your win was too long ago and someone won their one and only tournament after you? If you won a PBA event, you are a "Champion" and deserve a chance to shine in an event like this.

I personally don't think the announcers are the problem. We need integrity back in the sport. The announcers aren't running off near as many people as boredom and overpriced equipment is.

You obviously live in a winterless climate. Jan 22nd I'll be curled up under a blanket because it will be -20 outside. TV is pretty much the only thing to do up here in MN during the bitterly cold months of winter. I'll be tuning in!

The PBA last year was nothing but gimmicks and had little substance. Different formats, Different lane conditions on a single pair, Different whatever they could figure out. Remember gold pins??? These are all horrible idea they keep coming up with the lets us know the end is near for the PBA just like the WPBA.

I believe riggs was just merely pointing out that The Open, or The British Open as most commonly called in the U.S., is only on ESPN this year with no coverage on network / free tv here in the U.S. One of the 4 majors in golf it seems is taking a step down in coverage here, and bowling seems to get a small step up.

The difference is, basic cable subscribers will be able to watch the show on ABC, but not ESPN. People forget that there are still those out there that do not have 150 channels of everything and anything to watch, so the show being on ABC will reach MANY more people.
