2nd Greatest Lefty ever on PBA tour
« on: October 28, 2008, 11:11:41 AM »
I am throwing Earl Anthony out there as the greatest lefty ever.
It's hard to dispute that, 41 titles later.

I'm watching some Youtube videos of Mike Aulby and Parker Bohn III and I can't decide who I'd rank as the second greatest lefty ever.

I lean towards Parker, but Aulby won more Major's and was so good in the clutch, beating Parker for a couple of title's even (1998 Masters, 1996 TPC).

Let me know what you guys think and throw some more names in the discussion.

If you haven't guessed already, I'm a lefty myself.

Erik Forkel is another lefty that has terrific form and 5 PBA titles.  One also has to think of John Mazza with 8 titles in any discussion of lefties who are worthy of consideration.

In terms of rank, I have to agree with previous posters:
1 - Earl Anthony
2 - Parker Bohn III
3 - Mike Aulby

The Scott Devers reference made me chuckle.  It was always humorous to watch the guy...

Everyone forget Dave Davis?

But to answer the question I would give the nod to Aulby over Bohn. Aulby has many more Major titles than Bohn.

Let me revise my Earl Anthony title total to 43, I forgot they have now included his Masters titles.

Aulby because when I had glasses I was mistaken for him a few times at the Showboat. One guy watched me bowling and said you can even bowl right handed, I guess that works since I throw it so bad the guy thought i was using the wrong hand

with 31 pba national titles it's hard to pick anyone other than parker bohn III. however, mike aulby with 27 titles, and more majors, was a threat to win any time he stepped up on the approach.

It is not even close........RICK LAWRENCE.  He got on that hot streak where he made like 2 shows a few years back.

Seriously, I would give the nod to Parker, then Aulby.

I also liked watching Ricky Ward when he was out there, John Mazza, and John Gant.  Gant really strapped on it and I like how much lane he was playing in this video.

Well if you like how Parker bowls(and YES lefties look better and I'm a righty by birth).  Then you would also LOVE Dave Davis' form!  (He was one of Parker's teachers).

When Dave was about age 56 when I was fortunate enough to get to bowl with Dave he had just finished winning a senior major title(I'm sorry I forget which one)!  He had completed knee surgery and rehabilitation and his form was incredible and may frankly be bowling as well as he ever had in his life!  More powerful and fast than videos I have seen of him.  Fantastic!  At that time he qualified for about 4 out of 5 finals on TV and the Senior tour closed down...I don't even know if Dave still bowls!

20 titles....I'm not sure how many majors(say 3??) and I believe a couple of Senior majors also.

But most importantly....Dave I believe was 7 and 1 versus Earl on TV.

Many people don't know that fact! For me that is why I rank Dave over Parker(my favorite bowler today)!

Dave Davis....second greatest lefty of all time..

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS (got this from Wikipedia "including an amazing six titles in the 1967 season alone. The 1967 season would see him win the PBA National Championship on his way to Player of the Year honors. He also won the PBA National Championship in 1965, plus two Tournament of Champions titles (1968 and 1975)......4 majors!)

PS 1. Earl...2. Dave Davis...3. Parker Bohn!

While I also agree with Earl Anthony as the greatest, I think it's a toss-up between Parker and Aulby for second place, with Dave Davis, Johnny Petraglia, and the incredibly powerful Steve Cook and Jason Couch right behind them.

One of the bowlers that I absolutely loved to watch whenever he made the show, but, alas, despite his talent, most powerful release and silky smooth form, never managed to win a title, was Richard Wolfe.  I don't think there was ever anyone so smooth and powerful all in one package, either as a lefty or righty.

HUGH MILLER! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1G7jDgj_eU
J/K, although Hugh was a pretty good bowler

Actually, I love to watch Parker, but I have to give 2nd to Aulby.  Mike was the first player to ever make $300,000 in a single season.  You don't do that by being a slouch!

I didn't think your statement was accurate, so I did a little research.

Quote
Walter Ray Williams Jr. capped a recordbreaking season with a victory at the 2003 PBA World Championship at Taylor Sportsplex. Williams wrapped up his third win and second major of the campaign with a 226-205 win over Brian Kretzer in the championship match. The win earned the five-time PBA Player of the Year $120,000 and pushed his season earnings to a record $419,600, making him the first bowler to top $400,000 in a single season. '`This is such a great feeling," said Williams, who now ranks second all time with 37 PBA tour titles. "This feeling never gets, old. This win ranks right up there with the other majors I've won."

Pulled directly from the article here: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCK/is_/ai_101497223

However, it appears that I may have overstated Mr. Aulby's earnings as well.  He didn't actually quite make it to $300,000.  This is from his wikipedia page:
he collected a then-record $298,237 in winnings.  Close, but NO CIGAR.

For our researcher.

And Dave Davis was the first to win 6 in a single year!

(I have no idea).

Just thought I'd throw it out there!
