Ace Hardware show - SPOILERS
« on: December 03, 2006, 04:04:34 AM »
Anyone else enjoy the house/PBA shot comparison?  While there's a lot more that goes into making a pro shot hard, I think they really managed to boil it down to something that was easy for most people to understand.  For a three minute spot, I thought it was pretty well done.

Balls:

WRW: Morich Awesome Revs
TJ: Overtime, looked to be drilled label but couldn't see the MB

Malott: Power Machine
Shafer: Thunder Road Pearl ?  Looks very, very angular.

Shawn, I was refering to Wes throwing 1 bad shot and paying max for it..

You just summed up alot with your last statement. You know bowling is a game of angles and those angles directly relate to if you strike or not. Now granted due to high performance bowling balls and the amount they hook, the margin of error(the chances of striking) has greatly increased! But there is only the potential for someone to leave a split on any given shot! And that you have to get into your head if your ever going to make it somewhere in bowling! It is called a bad break!

Pretty good show, overall. Coming into the final match, I felt that Wes looked a lot more crisp compared to Tommy during the whole show, at least in terms of execution. As George pointed it out, the variables involved with this week's playing conditions aren't things they see very often on tour, so this made the show really interesting and quite puzzling for the players on the telecast this week.

For those who may have issues with bowlers' perceived attitudes, whether seen in public or television, you have to understand that these guys are professional athletes. They live to win, and win to live. Sure, that's a cliche thing to say, but it's true for a lot of these guys. The two men in the finals are fighting for about a $12,000 spread in their checks, and I'm quite certain that that $12,000 will be beneficial toward keeping their homes and families.

There are bowlers out on the tour that I am both a fan of an not a fan of. However, I wish to see a lot more respect for what the guys are doing week-in and week-out for a living. It's not easy to do what they do, nor is it a glamorous way to make money, either.

Back to the show- I thought Wes had a very good look in his semifinal match, but until he had gone to his fill balls in the 10th frame of his first match, I thought that purple/plum ball that he was throwing looked pretty good and unless Tommy figured something out with his reaction (which I thought was quite weak in the semifinal), Tommy might as well be packing up to go back home for a few days to collect his $12,000. Turns out in the end, I was wrong and saw that the reason why Wes probably lost this title was because of his lane playing strategies toward the end of the first match and probably during the practice shots prior to the finals match, causing him to be quite confused with his look in the final match- ultimately costing the title.

Just a little more information for you guys. The surface wasnt only wood, but it had 20' of guardian. I cant believe that they didnt mention that on the show. There's a big difference between wood and guardian. When they did the lane hardness tests a few years ago, the results were as follows ( im going off memory here ) :
Sheet of Glass - 100 ( Glass was the barometer )
Brunswick Pro Anvilane - 90
AMF HPL9000 - 78
Wood - 24
Guardian - 4

As you can see guardian is much softer than wood. That is why the lanes changed so much during just a few games on the show. That is also why it was tough to hook it this week. I crossed with Ryan this week. during the morning round his ball was sideways down lane and he struggled. My reaction was more blended and i bowled well. During the evening round our reactions reversed. It looked to me that he had the same type of look today that he had thursday morning

Also, Randy and i are very close friends. We used to spend a lot of time together when he was still out here. I've been trying to get him to say "Looks like Mr Momentum has changed his address" for 2 years now if he found the right situation. Imagine my suprise when he pulled that one out today !!!

At the beginning of the telecast when they were showing the characteristics of the lanes, I think either Randy or Norm mentioned it did have Guardian on it.

Wes' 9 pin in the 10th was caused by him hitting up on the ball at the release, the ball was about 2 inches off the lane for a good 7 or 8 feet down the lane. That one and the 7-10 were the only ones he tossed like that, it must be very easy to make that kind of mistake with that much pressure on you.

Good Luck in Baltimore next week Jeff, I hope to see you there if I can get off work (not likely unfortunatly, but I feel a bad cough coming on).

I'm curious as to Wes's decision to switch balls.  I know he threw two strikes with the new ball in the 11th and 12th of the first match, but I thought his reaction with the first ball (Power Machine) looked even better.  The second ball looked stronger overall or just reacted stronger to the dry, but looked like he was going to have problems with over/under.  The Power Machine seemed to be reading the pattern beautifully.  Obviously he knows what he's doing, but I'd like to know what he saw/felt that made him think the second ball gave him a better chance.

Tommy got away with several shots that he threw very wide and didn't catch the release good at the bottom.  He's done this on several shows.  It's one thing to  break up a 2-8-10 combo, but he even finds a way to strike.  He's definitely living good.  He paid a big price on the 7-10, but if you saw where the ball finished through the deck, it was hardly a surprise.

How about Wes whiffing both pins on his 7-10?  Even with the solid 9 pin and his fill ball that didn't react like he expected, making one of those pins on the split would at least have given him the tie.

Yep that really hurt since it was on a four bagger and the count would have given him the win because it would have counted twice from the strike in the previous frame.

I'd be bummed out too if I had a chance to win/tie and come up one pin short.
And I thought that train horn was coming from outside my house, a good mile away...

I personally HATE Wes, cant stand anything about him.  The pulling the thumb out b4 his approach, the way he complains about a bad rack on a horrible shot, the way he pouts & whines when he loses.  I just dont like anything about him, never have.  I bowled with him in a couple tournaments in texas b4 i was old enough to be all that good, & even then he annoyed me.

As far as TJ throwing a bad shot & getting the max penalty, IMO, ANY time u hit the pocket, u shouldnt leave a split.  A 10 pin, 8 pin...ect fine, but not a 7-10, thats just a horrible break.

Shawn

You base on of the reasons that you don't like a bowler because he pulls his thumb out of the ball before he throws it?  Don't you some quirks or timing devices that you use?

Malott happens to be a really nice guy. He shook TJ'S hand and that was it. Of course he was dissapointed that he lost. I personally thought he should have stuck with the Mean Machine but he knows his equipment better than I do.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed with the complaints about every weeks show? "Oh, they finally made a comparison from the THS to a PBA pattern... But they should have thrown more shots to show how easy the THS is." Come on! They did something, and that's good. Did Dave Ryan and Randy Pedersen say something dumb again this week, guys?

Oh, and it really looked more like a Thunderstruck solid that Shafer was throwing, not a T-Road Pearl.

It's not complaining, it's a legitimate statement.  I think that showing the miss room of the THS would be crucial to show how PBA patterns are much more difficult.  But I suppose we don't want to overwhelm people with too much knowledge at once since some people out there probably don't have any concept of oil patterns, nevermind tug/miss room.

Yes, they did mention that and also clarified that it was an overlay that was 5mm thick. As for laneplay, straighter was definitely the better way to go this week. During the pro-am, I tried inside angles with varied success, but hit the pocket much more consistently playing up the outside boards. It was amazing how different each lane was. On one pair of lanes, you had to either play two different lines, use two different balls, or a combination of the two. When crossing boards, I was playing 8 boards different on our pair! When playing up the boards, I could play the same line on each lane with a slight speed adjustment. It was pretty rough though!

i don't know about anyone else but to me the most amazing part of the telecast was that walter ray actually missed a spare----it cost him a win against tommy jones.
