Ace Hardware show - SPOILERS
« on: December 03, 2006, 04:04:34 AM »
Anyone else enjoy the house/PBA shot comparison?  While there's a lot more that goes into making a pro shot hard, I think they really managed to boil it down to something that was easy for most people to understand.  For a three minute spot, I thought it was pretty well done.

Balls:

WRW: Morich Awesome Revs
TJ: Overtime, looked to be drilled label but couldn't see the MB

Malott: Power Machine
Shafer: Thunder Road Pearl ?  Looks very, very angular.

i don't know about anyone else but to me the most amazing part of the telecast was that walter ray actually missed a spare----it cost him a win against tommy jones.

Tommy missed one too (same leave) so that evens it out. If Tommy hadn't missed his spare, Walter Ray's shot wouldn't have mattered even if he made his spare.

glad to see TJ win. Im beginning to like wes less and less. He cries like a child when he don't win... Sick of seeing it, and happy wes lost.

I like Wes. I also like his style. Smooth. Great guy with a great future ahead of him.

I think that the segment would've had a more profound meaning if we saw Randy Peterson throw up the boards instead of Norm, everybody knows Norm is one of the best up the board players

I do agree with justdale there.

Anyways, must be something really wrong with my television, and some of my friend's televisions. Because the ball that Shafer was throwing, looked to be as purple as it can get. As in a Thunderstruck solid.

brickguy221, there's only one flaw in your theory. no one expected walter ray to miss a spare---he's led the pba in spare making percentage for years. for him to miss a spare is extremely unusual. he usually goes entire tournaments without missing a spare. tommy jones was pba player of the year last year and was not in the top 10 in spare making percentage. he is probably twice as likely to miss a spare as walter ray.

Greg Hoope, there is no flaw in my theory. The whole point is....Walter Ray missed. The bottom line is....It wouldn't have mattered whether Walter Ray made his spare or not had Tommy Jones made his. End of the story.

I haven't seen it on TV, so I can only go by what the commentators said, but it really turned me off of TJ (more) when they mentioned that he doesn't like to lose so much so that he doesn't play if he doesn't think he can win.

I know!  We were laughing at what kind of a loser you would have to be to not play someone in ping-pong because you might lose.

I loved the THS vs. PBA comparison.  That was definitely my favorite part of this power player bore-show.  There was something said to the effect of:

Randy: I am going to do the same thing on this lane as I did on the house shot.
Norm: Uh, I don't recommend it...
Randy: I'm just going to do it anyway.
Randy: ... Um, why don't you show us how it is done Norm?

BUT, TJ missed his (THAT'S RIGHT, RIGHT THERE!) and I would have never thought WRW would have missed that one.  Crazy stuff!

I've been around people like that.  One of my friends is like that, even.  Playing any kind of game is excruciating because every move he makes, every aspect of what he does is painstakingly analyzed to ensure it's "optimal".  I play for fun, not always to win, and as soon as it becomes a game of manipulating the last percentage point to gain some miniscule statistical advantage, it's no longer fun.

Oddly enough, every time he comes to town, we try to get together to bowl.  Lunch-and-bowl or the late-night cosmic bowling where you pay for the lane and get it for two or three hours until closing.  I'm a far, far better bowler than he is (he's a house shoes and house ball kind of guy), but he still goes anyway.

Gee, I guess you missed the whole segment where they talked about the fact that Shafer does so well to make so many telecasts at the majors, you know, the tough conditions.  He didn't look good on TV this weekend, but I doubt he's a sprayer.  I never got any exact details, but it was my impression that Shafer blew up at another bowler who caused a disturbance, not the fans.

Was it Duke that said something to the effect that Shaefer exits the ball differently than most.....left vs. right or something?  That has to effect the roll on his ball.

Also he is shorter and is somewhat straight legged like Dave Ferraro which some will see this week I think it is as he has the commish's exemption....but anyway the straight legged style allows him to loft but without a lot of hit.  He hits out on the lane not up.

Ryan is kind of goofy but hey who on the tour isn't?  Most have lil idiosyncrasy's.  He's still a great bowler!

They're all crazy for going out on tour for such awful prize funds. The sad thing is, that this is the best that bowling has.

It's hard to not find a joe job that pays as much as the avg pba exempt player makes in a year. These guys are the best in the world at what they do and should be compensated as such, it is a crime that they aren't. If the PBA wanted their product to flourish, they would dump ten times the money they did last year instead of 18% less. If they had a million dollars for first place the ratings would be through the roof and people wouldn't question the legitimacy of the sport.
