Tony Reyes tried to put up a fight against WRW, but the 40 time titleist showed why he's one of the best. Reyes managed only one win in the 4th game, but couldn't keep the momentum into the pivotal game 5 where Williams beat him 236-220. Too bad. Reyes really deserves a title, and WRW really deserves a good arse-whipping.
Himmler and Ciccone took the match to 7 games and ended it with a pbbbbbt. The final match saw neither bowler eclipsing the 200 mark, but Himmler happened to outlast Ciccone - he won 182-172.
Another 7-game match featured reigning Player of the Year Patrick Allen against Jim Tomek. The two were going blow-by-blow before PA just got tired of it all and blew Tomek off the approach, beating him in game 7 224-165.
Tom Daugherty did everything he could to let Wes Malott take the Round of 16 match, but alas the man who made 4 consecutive televised finals this season just couldn't take advantage. Perhaps his relatively low rev-rate compared to Daugherty's no-thumb approach made the difference. In the end, it was Daugherty who moved on, beating Malott 231-226 in the 7th game. Not bad, considering Malott started with a blistering 119 in game 1.
Brad who? At least, that's what the Big Finn probably was saying in the round of 16. Angelo only posted one score above par - a 269 in game 2 (Mika shot 276). The rest of the match saw Angelo posting a pair of 189's and a game in the 170's. It's tough to bowl against a guy who only had 1 open frame in 4 games.
Mike Wolfe appears to be riding the wave the crested for him before the mid-season break. He was handling Monacelli quite well, though the 4th game had to be a surprise when Amleto posted 11 strikes (and 1 open) for a 268. But, as sometimes happens, Monacelli dropped over 100 pins in his next game (thanks to opens in the 6th, 9th, and 10th frames) to lose the match in game 5 218-167.
Ritchie Allen finally represented the South Region in a pleasant way by sweeping the Round of 32 'hero' Blaise Bedolla. I'm willing to bet that Bedolla wasn't all that excited at finally bowling over par with the 210 in game 4 considering Ritchie shut the match down with a 219. Bedolla shot 705 for 4 games - definitely not something to be proud of today. A good showing for the tournament nevertheless.
Chris "High-Five" Collins put up a good fight, taking Tim Criss to 6 games before he was finally told to stop slapping the hand of everybody in the gallery and pack his sh!t. It took a little while, but someone finally managed to get Collins to understand that, though 180 wasn't a bad game on Shark Pattern this week, the 212 Criss bowled was still enough to send the hyper-energetic Collins east for next week's tournament. There will be hands to slap along the way, Chris. People will be lined up along the highway; just hold your hand out the window.
And that is all (until the round of 8 concludes).
Good night and Goddess Bless.
