An interesting third guy in the booth
« on: March 03, 2008, 11:58:43 PM »
So, some of you may remember that awhile back I asked ESPN.com's "Sports Guy" Bill Simmons about his friend Rob Stone doing PBA commentary this year.  Bill mentioned he was going to be on a PBA broadcast sometime this year with Rob.  Well, yesterday it got mentioned again when Bill linked to the article Steve Gortches wrote about the hambone phenomenom.

"Uh-oh. My buddy Rob Stone is taking a beating from bowling fanatics for having the audacity to enjoy himself during PBA broadcasts. Is it going to help matters or hurt matters when I join Stoner for a PBA telecast this month as the third guy in the booth? I'm going out on a limb and saying it'll hurt matters. Oh well."

I love that. I didn't know that Rob Stone's job was "to enjoy himself". Is there a little bit more to that job?

FYI For the most part I think he has done the best job since Chris Schenckel passed away and ESPN got took Denny Shriner off bowling (He was a real bowler and showed enthusiasm and skill for his job.) He actually learned and showed a desire to learn. (He still has a lot to learn.) The others were obviously only bidding their time until they could get a more desireable job.

I liked Dave Ryan (okay, boo if you must.)  He wasn't great, but he was a decent announcer.  With that being said, Rob Stone is definitely growing on me.  Come on, he has people making up signs (a lot of kids too) and coming up with different call-signs.  That is great.

I even heard one of our serious bowlers yell "We got a hambone" during a 40-frame game exercise last Friday.  No, I won't I identify this person, but I felt the same way.  "Hambone!"  Cool.  You have got to keep it fun or the folks won't tune it.  Just my opinion.

Being a huge Boston sports fan (yes, I'm from New England, I'm not a poser), I love The Sports Guy. I hope he makes it into the booth at some point this year. It would be terrific.
