McCune......Baaaaad
« on: December 19, 2004, 04:02:04 AM »
God, as soon as I saw that bucket in the first I knew he was a deadman.  He looked like an open play bowler out there.  Granted he's skilled because he averaged 240+ for the week, but that goes to show you guys that the one-shot wonders will never be as successful on tour as the more versatile tweeners.  Go Machuga!

I think he is a good bowler.

He was just nervous as heck (liek i do too at big tourney's) so he wasnt abe to focus very well or throw the shot he wanted too.

I mean he hasnt missed a single pin spare all year they said? and he missed the 4.

I think he's a good bowler too.  After 19 years on tour you'd think he'd be a little more seasoned.  I don't think it had anything to do with nerves, and everything to due with a poor reaction since the shot wasn't there that he obliterated for the entire week.

For those who know nothing
Eugene is as far from a one shot player as there is on tour. He can hook it as much as anyone and can play straight as well.
As for today, I think that Machuga torching the lanes in practice and Barnes playing the same area caused Eugene problems.
His lack of confidence in his reaction was apparent from the interview.

He should have stuck with the first shot he threw, but just slow it down some. Man does he throw hard. Does anybody know his average ball speed? I'm guessing 20-21mph on strike ball and about 25 on spares.

More like 23 on the first ball, about 28-30 on the spare.  I know a kid that throws 20-21 on the strike ball, hooking it and it's nowhere near as fast as McCune.

Didn't they show that he was only 8-8 lifetime on television coming into today?  That isn't a lot of shows in 19 years to grow accustomed to that element of the tour.

My two cents worth.
Eugene is definitely versatile. I have seen him throw bullets up the gutter, all the way to playing 4th or 5th arrow. I have seen him throw 21 mph strike balls and I have seen him kill the speed to get a ball reaction. In this day and age the pros can not survive on tour with just one shot. I think a few things took place today; 1. As was said before, the shot he killed this week was not there. 2. He found absolutely nothing he liked in the warm up shots. 3. Due to the first two items, he had no sure plan to get to the hole. Where it appears he failed, is committing to a shot and then adjusting off that. I agree with legend, looks like his best bet was taking a bit of speed off and going up the boards. That would be more in his comfort zone or A game.

What Jabroni said.

As Randy clearly told us, the reason McCune made the show this week is that he found a ball and a line that gave him the pocket and carry all week long, without having to move either his feet or his target.

He didn't have that shot on the show, and was completely lost.

Anyone who thinks McCune is versatile in the way that Duke is, is crazy.

When he won 2 years ago he started way inside with a Vendetta Pearl, went 2-8-10, followed up by an 8-10, switched outside with the Element and ran off 6 in a row, most carrying the 6-7-10 started screaming and won the first match, then did the same thing in the final. That shows a little versatility, but nothing like a Duke or Voss. Prime example of how TV day is always different than match play/qualifying. Can have a shot all week and light them up, then get to the TV pair where 4 guys are on the same pair burning up a spot to use and his look is completely different. I havent watched the show yet, but when I do I will know more of how he did (or didnt do in this case).

Versatile ??? One title in 19 years ??? As Jim Rome says, "Scoreboard". Not in this case ... and a .500 record on TV ??? Nope ... not versatile; IMHO>

Just to stir the pot a little...I can't help but note the fact nobody has mentioned that McCune beat a favorite of so many around here in order to make the show.  You almost got to see Traber

And, admittedly, the fact that those two went at it in the Round of 8 suggests that there was a good look during the week piping it to the pocket...
