I am not sure if it actually a drift, or if that is how he gets to the line playin inside more.

I thought he was more walking to that line. I will have to watch it closer.
I know some people who stnd 20 and walk to 25-30 plus to get around the ball return. I have it taped and will watch.

But why do that ?!?! Doesn't make sense....

alot of the guys were doing it when i was at the rd. of 32...

pete weber does it alot. he drifts an easy 10-12 boards. but he always ends up at the right spot... i dunno. i assume they do it so that they can walk with their hips/body positioned at the line like they will need to be when they release the ball.

i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. can i carry the 7 and level the deck with a $60 ball?

I drift 3 boards right.
BUT - I also walk into my line - often 4-6 more boards right, sometimes 2-3 left.
I got into a heated discussion with Mike Jasneau at CATS in Reno about that - he called it drift, I called it deliberate.

The ONLY time that makes sense is if you're already playing up against the ball return....ANY other time, it doesn't make sense...start there, don't walk there ?!

I watched myself bowl and noticed I drift quite a bit to the left.  It just feels comfortable for me.  On my 6 & 10 pins I walk into them and same for the 4 or 7.  On my strike shots and other spares I noticed that I drift to the left.  I have a screwed up approach anyways.  I like to think my release makes up for my atrocious approach...

I think if you watch the majority of (Right handed) power players drift to the left on the approach regardless of line played.

They like to drift left, open the shoulder, clear the hips, and throw right. It makes it difficult for them to play down the twig where you can not send it right but most of the time it fits their game. It is, as stated, an advantage if you need to really get deep to find some head oil.

I walk towards my target but because of the ball return it is difficult to play deeper than 4th arrow on the right hand lane. Bowlers that drift can get into 6th arrow or deeper.

The biggest key is to do the same thing every time. If you drift left 10 boards then always drift left 10 boards, not 7 or 12.

On some of the ball returns, it is easy to catch the edge of it with the heel if you start way left instead of drifting there...and trust me when I say that there is nothing more frustrating than to catch the return when you are taking that second or third step.

Depending on the shot I will purposefully drift left (I'm a righty) in order to more easily open my hips.  The further right I want to throw it the further I drift.  I do still have a target board that I end on so I've never seen it as a problem.

I used to think that was what Brad Angelo was doing until recently since he has been playing more direct down the lanes, yet he still drifts.  I wonder if he started out doing it for the same reason but maybe it has just become habit?

Lately I've been coaching alot and analyzing my game, my teammates, and others.  Alot of bowlers just have a natural drift.  Whether it be right or left, that is how they naturally walk to the line.  There is nothing wrong with it, it is just a natural occurance.  It only becomes a problem when the bowler cannot hit a mark.  If you drift left you are going to open up the lanes because you have to open your hips back to the right to even release the ball on line so you won't throw it left of the headpin.  Most people have a drift and don't even know it.  I know my natural drift is 4 left.
