Maybe David Tessman and Norm got into a bevel knife fight because after the first frame, Tessman picked up a spare and Norm started fiddling with his thumb tape and Tessman got tired of waiting on him and got up in front of Norm to bowl and as he threw the ball Norm attacked Tessman from behind causing Tessman to leave a seven count and both were ejected after a fight that would have been UFC worthy.

Either that or Norm's neck is bothering him again which means he will probably win again next week.

That really bugs me about Norm.  He didn't even bowl a full game before withdrawing.  If he were having trouble, he should have withdrawn earlier so as to free up an extra spot for another rabbit.  He must have gone to the practice sessions, so he'd've known that he was at least a little injured.  Probably just wanted to collect his paycheck and points for the week, which he wouldn't get if he withdrew earlier.

Edit:  According to the latest article on the website, he withdrew Wednesday night.  Plenty of time to get another rabbit in.

The article on the home page says Norm withdrew after a toe injury he suffered Wednesday night. Probably AFTER the practice session. He might have thought it would have been ok today, and decided after a partial game he couldn't do it...
He's not in his 20s any more.

And yet if you do a quick glance, he could pass as a mid 20's person.

John Slavich, the guy who would have gotten the alternate slot said on the PBA forum that Norm threw one ball in the first game then withdraw. He also said that since Norm threw a ball in competition he could no longer get the alternate slot.

Love this format. An exempt pro barley breaks 100 and another shows up for 1 frame and collects over a grand. What a joke.

Brian, you really are an idiot aren't you?? All you can ever seem to do is bash everything from bowlers, to the pba, to formats, to anything and everything you can!!

First of all learn how to spell.. Barley?!?! I believe that is suppose to be BOWLER!!

Tommy Jones can average 150 for the rest of the year and he will collect $1,800 every week! That is the joys of being on the EXEMPT TOUR!!!

I think Norm did the right thing.  And any of you probaly would have done it too.  Think about it; you fly out to Reno, get hurt, why not just throw one ball so you can take your $1,800 check?  Why give your $1,800 to some guy who hasn't even earned exempt status yet?  Just to be a nice guy?  I don't think so.  It's survival.  How would you like this scenario:

You are on your way to work at a sales job.  You already have a 100 degree temperature suffering from flulike symptoms, but a client that you've met with previously will be waiting at your office door ready to sign that contract so you can get that $1,800 commmission check.  So you show up to the office, have him sign the contract and BINGO, you've closed your sale.  Now you can tell the boss how sick you're feeling so you can go home and take the weekend off.  What would you have rather done?  Give that sale and $1,800 commission to Joe Blow who's been working with the company for 2 weeks while you've been there for 20 years?

Be realistic guys.  This is a job, not a charity event.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeexactly, DP3! I work in business sales, so that example is perfect!

These guys bust their hind ends in a sport that pays less now than over 10 years ago, on a tour where you have to win or gather points for an entire year to gain a permanent spot... even then those spots are like texas weather: always subject to change. I'll be damned before I let someone else get my $1800.00 check!

Brunswick and Lane #1: there is no other. Well... maybe a few Storms... and a One. Did I mention Roto Grip yet?

Except your guy did his whole job.  He had no other responsibilities regarding his job besides a three minute meeting to sign a contract.

Norm did approximately 0.6% of his job (1 frame out of at least 140 that he'd bowl in qualifying, whether he came in first or last).  But he still collected his money.

I'm sorry, I don't feel like the sales example is in any way similar.

Imagine if every week, the guys who withdrew flew in Thursday morning, picked up a house ball, threw it, said "I'm going home" and walked out the door with their $1800.  We'd be pissed off because there were two or three bowlers (always someone's favorite local guy) who could have taken their place.  Suddenly the field is 60 every week instead of 64.

Tom Baker has one foot in retirement.  He's got two years left on his exemption, and he's ready to quit.  So his last year, he does just that.  Flies in Thursday morning, rents a pair of house shoes, throws a house ball for a frame, withdraws, comes in last every week (what does he care?  He's retiring anyway), collects his paycheck, and is out the door before the end of the first game.

I understand why Duke did what he did.  He put out his time and money to be there and since it's not against the rules (there're those pesky rules again), he withdrew and salvaged his paycheck.  You're right, it's not a charity.  It's a sport, with people who compete.  He didn't compete, and there were 50 other guys waiting who would have been happy to do so.
